Book Numerical Assessments of Cracks in Elastic Plastic Materials

Download or read book Numerical Assessments of Cracks in Elastic Plastic Materials written by Huang Yuan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book a systematic discussion of crack problems in elastic-plastic materials is presented. The state of the art in fracture mechanics research and assessment of cracks is documented, with the help of analytic, asymptotic methods as well as finite element computations. After a brief introduction to fracture mechanics, the two-parameter concept for stationary cracks is studied in addition to the issues in three-dimensional crack fields under coupling with strong out-of-plane effects. Cracks along interfaces and crack growth problems under mixed mode conditions are also treated. A systematic study of stress singularities for different notches is accompanied by detailed finite element computations.

Book Crack Tip Fields for Fast Fracture of an Elastic Plastic Material

Download or read book Crack Tip Fields for Fast Fracture of an Elastic Plastic Material written by J. D. Achenbach and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An asymptotic analysis of the near-tip fields is given for transient crack propagation in an elastic-plastic material. The material is characterized by J2 flow theory together with a bilinear effective stress-strain curve. Both plane stress and plane strain conditions have been considered. Explicit results are given for the order of the crack-tip singularity, the angular position at which unloading occurs, and the angular variation of the near-tip stresses, all as functions of the crack-tip speed and the ratio of the slopes of the two portions of the bilinear stress-strain relation. Book Elastic Plastic Mixed Mode Fracture Criteria and Parameters

This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My wife Tatyana, daughter Mariya, son Alexandr It is well known that the mixed-mode conditions appear when the direction of the applied loading does not coincide with the orthogonal K,-Kn-Km space. In general, in the industrial practice the mixed-mode fracture and the mixed-mode crack growth are more likely to be considered the rule than the exception. Miller et al. considers that cracks can grow due to a mixture of processes (ductile and brittle), mechanisms (static, fatigue, creep) and loading modes (tension, torsion, biax ial/multiaxial). Additionally mixed-mode crack-extension can be affected by many other considerations such as artifact geometry (thin plates, thick shells, and the size, shape and orientation of the defect), environmental effects (temperature, gaseous and liquid surroundings), material state (crystallographic structure, heat treatment and route of manufacture) and stress conditions (out-of-phase and ran dom loading effects). The main feature of the mixed-mode fracture is that the crack growth would no longer take place in a self-similar manner and does not follow a universal trajec tory that is it will grow on a curvilinear path. There are various fracture criteria, which predict the behavior of cracks in brittle and ductile materials loaded in combined modes. Linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) criteria predict basi cally the same direction for crack propagation. Cracks in brittle materials have been shown to propagate normal to the maximum tangential stress. In ductile ma terials yielding occurs at the crack tip and LEFM is no longer applicable.

Download or read book Fracture Mechanics written by Surjya Kumar Maiti and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fracture mechanics studies the development and spreading of cracks in materials. The study uses two techniques including analytical and experimental solid mechanics. The former is used to determine the driving force on a crack and the latter is used to measure material's resistance to fracture. The text begins with a detailed discussion of fundamental concepts including linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM), yielding fracture mechanics, mixed mode fracture and computational aspects of linear elastic fracture mechanics. It explains important topics including Griffith theory of brittle crack propagation and its Irwin and Orowan modification, calculation of theoretical cohesive strength of materials through an atomic model and analytical determination of crack tip stress field. This book covers MATLAB programs for calculating fatigue life under variable amplitude cyclic loading. The experimental measurements of fracture toughness parameters KIC, JIC and crack opening displacement (COD) are provided in the last chapter.

Book Finite Deformation Analysis of Crack Tip Opening in Elastic plastic Materials and Implications for Fracture Initiation

Download or read book Finite Deformation Analysis of Crack Tip Opening in Elastic plastic Materials and Implications for Fracture Initiation written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyses of the stress and strain fields around smoothly blunting crack tips in both non-hardening and hardening elastic-plastic materials, under contained plane strain yielding and subject to mode I opening loads, have been carried out by a finite element method suitably formulated to admit large geometry changes. The results include the crack tip shape and near-tip deformation field, and the crack tip opening displacement has been related to a parameter of the applied load, the J-integral. The hydrostatic stresses near the crack tip are limited due to the lack of constraint on the blunted tip, limiting achievable stress levels except in a very small region around the crack tip in power law hardening materials. The J-integral is found to be path independent except very close to the crack tip in the region affected by the blunted tip. Models for fracture are discussed in the light of these results including one based on the growth of voids. The rate of void growth near the tip in hardening materials seems to be little different from the rate in non-hardening materials when measured in terms of crack tip opening displacement, which leads to a prediction of higher toughness in hardening materials. It is suggested that improvement of this model would follow from better understanding of void-void and void-crack coalescence and void nucleation, and some criteria and models for these are discussed. The implications of the finite element results for fracture criteria based on critical stress, strain or both are discussed with respect to transition of fracture mode and the angle of initial crack growth. Localization of flow is discussed as a possible fracture model and as a model for void-crack coalescence.

Book Elementary engineering fracture mechanics

Download or read book Elementary engineering fracture mechanics written by D. Broek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When asked to start teaching a course on engineering fracture mechanics, I realized that a concise textbook, giving a general oversight of the field, did not exist. The explanation is undoubtedly that the subject is still in a stage of early development, and that the methodologies have still a very limited applicability. It is not possible to give rules for general application of fracture mechanics concepts. Yet our comprehension of cracking and fracture beha viour of materials and structures is steadily increasing. Further developments may be expected in the not too distant future, enabling useful prediction of fracture safety and fracture characteristics on the basis of advanced fracture mechanics procedures. The user of such advanced procedures m\lst have a general understanding of the elementary concepts, which are provided by this volume. Emphasis was placed on the practical application of fracture mechanics, but it was aimed to treat the subject in a way that may interest both metallurgists and engineers. For the latter, some general knowledge of fracture mechanisms and fracture criteria is indispensable for an apprecia tion of the limita tions of fracture mechanics. Therefore a general discussion is provided on fracture mechanisms, fracture criteria, and other metal lurgical aspects, without going into much detail. Numerous references are provided to enable a more detailed study of these subjects which are still in a stage of speculative treatment.

Book Elastic Plastic Deformation in Cracked Solids and Ductile Fracture Criterion

Download or read book Elastic Plastic Deformation in Cracked Solids and Ductile Fracture Criterion written by H. W. Liu and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objectives of the program are to study crack tip stresses and crack tip deformation, and to use the findings of these studies to investigate the fractures of ductile and tough materials. Crack tip displacement and strain fields were measured with the moire method, and crack tip stress, displacement, and strain fields were calculated with the finite elements method. The measured displacement and strain fields agree well with the finite element calculations. The results were used to develop the direct correspondence method of evaluating fracture toughness of ductile tough materials and were also to analyze deformation mode of fatigue crack growth.
