Book Manufacturing Databases and Computer Integrated Systems

Download or read book Manufacturing Databases and Computer Integrated Systems written by Dimitris N. Chorafas and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1993-07-23 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manufacturing Databases and Computer Integrated Systems is the first book to probe the problems and solutions presented by the diversity of databases within the manufacturing industry. The author examines these heterogeneous databases at both the macro (national/international) level and micro (intracompany and intercompany) level. This book is the result of an extensive international research project that involved 87 leading organizations. Manufacturing Databases and Computer Integrated Systems presents the compelling argument for using computers as database integrators, a concept beyond the obvious applications of number crunching and data storage. The book addresses several different areas of manufacturing technology, including product policies in manufacturing, fuzzy controls in plant operations, concurrent engineering, practical applications for expert systems, organizational prerequisites in manufacturing, heterogenous database environments, the benefits of object-oriented databases, and the requirements for virtual database integration. Manufacturing Databases and Computer Integrated Systems also presents case studies, including the TRW solution applied in Operation Desert Storm, Project CRONUS by BBN, the Intelligent Database Assistant (IDA) by GTE, General Motor's DATAPLEX solution, and Project Carnot by the Microelectronics and Computer Development Corporation (MCC). The book is a "must" for computer and database technologists, engineers, and senior management at most companies worldwide.

Download or read book The Unnormalized Relational Data Model written by Hiroyuki Kitagawa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer Science Workbench is a monograph series which will provide you with an in-depth working knowledge of current developments in computer technology. Every volume in this series will deal with a topic of importance in computer science and elaborate on how you yourself can build systems related to the main theme. You will be able to develop a variety of systems, including computer software tools, computer graphics, computer animation, database management systems, and computer-aided design and manufacturing systems. Computer Science Workbench represents an important new contribution in the field of practical computer technology. TOSIYASU L. KUNII Preface The evolution of database systems research is itself a story. Long after the emergence of systems derived from practical applications, Codd's relational data model has gradually occupied the theoretical domain of database systems and is moving into the realms of practical use. Certainly, the theoretical foundation makes database design, validation, and testing easier. However, Cod d's model allows only fiat tables to be handled, while most business and engineering data in practice are in nested table forms. Thus, a recent major obstacle in database systems development is the large gap between the theory and the practice.

Download or read book Information Management for Engineering Design written by Randy H. Katz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer-aided design syst, ems have become a big business. Advances in technology have made it commercially feasible to place a powerful engineering workstation on every designer's desk. A major selling point for these workstations is the computer aided design software they provide, rather than the actual hardware. The trade magazines are full of advertisements promising full menu design systems, complete with an integrated database (preferably "relational"). What does it all mean? This book focuses on the critical issues of managing the information about a large design project. While undeniably one of the most important areas of CAD, it is also one of the least understood. Merely glueing a database system to a set of existing tools is not a solution. Several additional system components must be built to create a true design management system. These are described in this book. The book has been written from the viewpoint of how and when to apply database technology to the problems encountered by builders of computer-aided design systems. Design systems provide an excellent environment for discovering how far we can generalize the existing database concepts for non-commercial applications. This has emerged as a major new challenge for database system research. We have attem pted to avoid a "database egocentric" view by pointing out where existing database technology is inappropriate for design systems, at least given the current state of the database art. Book A Relational Approach to the Integrated Database Management System for Computer Aided Manufacturing

Download or read book A Relational Approach to the Integrated Database Management System for Computer Aided Manufacturing written by KS. Fu and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aiming at a uniform relational treatment of data items which are related to various aspects in manufacturing, this research emphasizes convenient facilities for defining relational data schemes, manipulating relational data, and incorporating with application uses. To facilitate the definition of data scheme, the generic relational model is utilized to more faithfully catch different levels of data abstraction. The design of the generic relational model is eased by a syntactic approach. Also, to support such a database, a query language based on SEQUEL has been modified and is now being implemented. By a systematic database design methodology and a powerful query language, data ranging from geometric description to machinability can be represented as flat relational tables rather than files or trees with pointers.

Book An Object oriented Data Model for Managing Computer aided Design and Computer aided Manufacturing Data Bases

Download or read book An Object oriented Data Model for Managing Computer aided Design and Computer aided Manufacturing Data Bases written by Stephanie Cammarata and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This paper develops sophisticated data management facilities for maintaining computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) databases. The product of this research is the theoretical design of an object-oriented data model (ODM), and the implementation of an ODM computer software prototype. The work focuses on mechanical design, engineering, and manufacturing, specifically product definition data generated during initial design phases. Detailed analysis of CAD/CAM application and data management requirements were conducted to produce the ODM functional specifications. This paper presents the results of this analysis and an evaluation of ODM in achieving the goals of integrated CAD/CAM data management systems. Although most discussion concentrates on mechanical manufacturing, the developed methodology and tools for CAD/CAM data management apply to other design domains such as architecture and electronics."--Rand abstracts

Book A Database Approach to Computer Integrated Manufacturing

Download or read book A Database Approach to Computer Integrated Manufacturing written by Dana E. Madison and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents a new approach to the integration of manufacturing activities. The manufacturing environment has capitalized on the use of automation to evolve to a highly specialized state characterized by heterogeneous systems providing computer support to the various activities. Conventional approaches to integration assume that these activities must continue to exist in their current relationships. We use a database approach to the integration problem which removes the traditional boundaries between activities. We develop a data model which captures more of the semantics of the manufacturing environment than existing models and allows us to take a data-oriented perspective of the activities it encompasses. We also show how the use of the data-oriented approach provides for integration of these activities and reduces the complexity of the manufacturing environment. Keywords: High level interface. (KR).
