Book excerpt: The steady increase of human activities over the years has led to high atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases such as CO2 resulting in a steady rise of temperature levels, particularly over the last two decades. Therefore, the appropriate long-term storage of CO2 offers an attractive solution to reduce CO2 concentration in the atmosphere, especially in terms of storage of CO2 in abandoned coal seams with the potential of CH4 recovery (ECBM). However, previous studies on CO2 storage estimation methodologies in various sedimentary rocks are not adequate. Therefore, this study is focused on understanding and improving CO2 storage capacity estimation in sedimentary rocks.This thesis is a comprehensive summary of many aspects of my research, outlines the technical aspects of the research. CO2 storage estimation in sedimentary rocks has been studied comprehensively in numerical, empirical and experimental studies using a novel experimental set-up for coal and saline aquifers. This research aimed to understand and evaluate CO2 storage capacity in underground sedimentary rocks. Consequently, it is hoped that this research make a major contribution to climate warming studies as it focuses on CO2 storage estimation methodologies in coal and saline aquifers empirically, numerically and experimentally. Advanced experimental equipment has been developed with advanced features to observe pressure development along the sample. This equipment has the ability to regulate pressure and temperature. This apparatus was used to conduct permeability tests and storage estimations for Victorian brown coal specimens to investigate the effects of sub-critical and super-critical CO2 injections. The reconstituted coal samples were developed in the apparatus by compacting crushed coal using axial pressure loads. CO2 was then injected into the coal core while monitoring the injected CO2 under controlled pressure and temperature. Due to CO2 injection, coal swells as CO2 is adsorbed to the coal matrix. However, at increased pressures coal swelling increases,leading to increased storage capacity. Importantly, N2 has the potential to reverse CO2-induced swelling, recovering the lost permeability due to CO2 injection. Uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) testing was conducted on a reconstituted coal sample to observe compression load monitoring with an ARAMIS camera system. In this way, a compression load of 1.12 MPa was observed, which is consistent with the compressionload observed for previous UCS compaction of Victorian brown coal specimens. Numerical modelling was carried out using field-scale data as well as laboratory data using the COMET3 numerical simulator. The calibrated models showed good agreement with the field-scale model and the laboratory data. Then a sensitivity study was conducted to investigate the effects with respect to different coal parameters. Adsorption models were reviewed to investigate the accuracy of previous adsorption models, and adsorption models have been developed based on coal properties forbituminous coal types.

Book excerpt: To achieve goals for climate and economic growth, "negative emissions technologies" (NETs) that remove and sequester carbon dioxide from the air will need to play a significant role in mitigating climate change. Unlike carbon capture and storage technologies that remove carbon dioxide emissions directly from large point sources such as coal power plants, NETs remove carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere or enhance natural carbon sinks. Storing the carbon dioxide from NETs has the same impact on the atmosphere and climate as simultaneously preventing an equal amount of carbon dioxide from being emitted. Recent analyses found that deploying NETs may be less expensive and less disruptive than reducing some emissions, such as a substantial portion of agricultural and land-use emissions and some transportation emissions. In 2015, the National Academies published Climate Intervention: Carbon Dioxide Removal and Reliable Sequestration, which described and initially assessed NETs and sequestration technologies. This report acknowledged the relative paucity of research on NETs and recommended development of a research agenda that covers all aspects of NETs from fundamental science to full-scale deployment. To address this need, Negative Emissions Technologies and Reliable Sequestration: A Research Agenda assesses the benefits, risks, and "sustainable scale potential" for NETs and sequestration. This report also defines the essential components of a research and development program, including its estimated costs and potential impact.

The book aims to improve the decision-making process in greenhouse gases mitigation and energy/environmental governance; therefore, it captures the specialized and non-specialized audience.

Book excerpt: A reconnaissance assessment of the carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration potential within the Triassic age rift trend sediments of South Carolina, Georgia and the northern Florida Rift trend was performed for the Office of Fossil Energy, National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL). This rift trend also extends into eastern Alabama, and has been termed the South Georgia Rift by previous authors, but is termed the South Carolina, Georgia, northern Florida, and eastern Alabama Rift (SGFAR) trend in this report to better describe the extent of the trend. The objectives of the study were to: (1) integrate all pertinent geologic information (literature reviews, drilling logs, seismic data, etc.) to create an understanding of the structural aspects of the basin trend (basin trend location and configuration, and the thickness of the sedimentary rock fill), (2) estimate the rough CO2 storage capacity (using conservative inputs), and (3) assess the general viability of the basins as sites of large-scale CO2 sequestration (determine if additional studies are appropriate). The CO2 estimates for the trend include South Carolina, Georgia, and northern Florida only. The study determined that the basins within the SGFAR trend have sufficient sedimentary fill to have a large potential storage capacity for CO2. The deeper basins appear to have sedimentary fill of over 15,000 feet. Much of this fill is likely to be alluvial and fluvial sedimentary rock with higher porosity and permeability. This report estimates an order of magnitude potential capacity of approximately 137 billion metric tons for supercritical CO2. The pore space within the basins represent hundreds of years of potential storage for supercritical CO2 and CO2 stored in aqueous form. There are many sources of CO2 within the region that could use the trend for geologic storage. Thirty one coal fired power plants are located within 100 miles of the deepest portions of these basins. There are also several cement and ammonia plants near the basins. Sixteen coal fired power plants are present on or adjacent to the basins which could support a low pipeline transportation cost. The current geological information is not sufficient to quantify specific storage reservoirs, seals, or traps. There is insufficient hydrogeologic information to quantify the saline nature of the water present within all of the basins. Water data in the Dunbarton Basin of the Savannah River Site indicates dissolved solids concentrations of greater than 10,000 parts per million (not potential drinking water). Additional reservoir characterization is needed to take advantage of the SGFAR trend for anthropogenic CO2 storage. The authors of this report believe it would be appropriate to study the reservoir potential in the deeper basins that are in close proximity to the current larger coal fired power plants (Albany-Arabi, Camilla-Ocilla, Alamo-Ehrhardt, and Jedburg basin).

Book excerpt: Large-scale deployment (i.e.,, nationwide) of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology will play a key role in carbon storage removal (CDR) and overall climate mitigation efforts. The economic feasibility of large-scale CCS deployments partly depends on the CO2 storage costs per project. However, the suitability of regional storage and injectivity per project, particularly for large-scale purposes, is not well understood. This study focuses on two concepts that augments existing studies of storage capacity and cost to assess the opportunities and barriers to CDR. The first concept focuses on identifying all potential areas for CO2 storage within the sedimentary rocks throughout the U.S. based on a novel concept we call the CO2 Storage Window. The second concept focuses on improving CO2 storage costs estimates by considering 1) the number of wells needed to inject at a certain rate, dependent on injectivity of the area and 2) the areal extent of pressure build-up caused by CO2 injection. This area extent is a novel concept we call pressure space. Understanding the pressure space of a project helps delineate the area of review for a project and the extent of the pore space required for the project. The results of this study include a spatial geodatabase and a series of U.S. cohesive, spatial distribution maps showcasing 1) CO2 storage potential in areas not explored before, 2) Storage costs per CCS project and storage costs per ton of CO2, assuming a constant maximum storage capacity of 20 Mt per project over a 20-year timeframe, and 3) Estimated storage costs per ton of CO2 in areas where storage potential is found but where there is not enough data to calculate capacity nor injectivity

It is clear that we need to reduce the emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from our atmosphere if we want to avoid greatly increased risk of damage from climate change. Aggressively pursuing a program of emissions abatement or mitigation will show results over a timescale of many decades. How do we actively remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to make a bigger difference more quickly? As one of a two-book report, this volume of Climate Intervention discusses CDR, the carbon dioxide removal of greenhouse gas emissions from the atmosphere and sequestration of it in perpetuity. Climate Intervention: Carbon Dioxide Removal and Reliable Sequestration introduces possible CDR approaches and then discusses them in depth. Land management practices, such as low-till agriculture, reforestation and afforestation, ocean iron fertilization, and land-and-ocean-based accelerated weathering, could amplify the rates of processes that are already occurring as part of the natural carbon cycle. Other CDR approaches, such as bioenergy with carbon capture and sequestration, direct air capture and sequestration, and traditional carbon capture and sequestration, seek to capture CO2 from the atmosphere and dispose of it by pumping it underground at high pressure.
