IX THE NEXT NEEDS IN MISSIONS Some things that are indispensable in missions are always indispensable, and some of the needs, therefore, know no times and seasons. In general terms we may state the abiding and unalterable necessities; and yet even these perpetual needs, as soon as they come to be looked upon specifically for practical use, are found to vary with conditions, so as to be really different at different times. It is only when we are talking in the large that we can speak of the needs in missions as unvarying. For the purposes of actual life, the needs of to-day are never exactly the same as the needs of yesterday. The crisis that we have been considering brings its own suggestions of necessity. There has come a visible pause in missionary interest, -- not a cessation, indeed, and yet a real diminishing of the impulse. Of course this calls us to stop and think about it; and our thoughts must go in both directions. We must search out the causes of the change, and then we must inquire what is the next thing to be done or sought, in order to the coming of better times for the work that we love. When we come to this latter inquiry, we shall be sadly wrong if we content ourselves with talking in general terms about those supplies of grace and habits of godliness which are always needed. We must pass beyond the familiar phrases. The present crisis is sharp and serious, and like all crises it is special, consisting in specific effects from actual causes; hence it brings its special problems and demands. The conditions considered in the preceding chapter are mainly unprecedented, and the next needs in missions are the needs that spring out of them. Concerning these it is the urgent duty of the church of to-day to inquire. Our question...

Book The Conversion of Missionaries

Download or read book The Conversion of Missionaries written by Xi Lian and published by Penn State University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like many of her fellow missionaries to China, Pearl Buck found that she was not immune to the influence of her adopted home. Some missionaries even found themselves "convert[ed] ... by the Far East." In this book Lian Xi tells the story of Buck and two other American missionaries to China in the early twentieth century who gradually came to question, and eventually reject, the evangelical basis of Protestant missions as they developed an appreciation for Chinese religions and culture. Lian Xi uses these stories as windows to understanding the development of a broad theological and cultural liberalism within American Protestant missions, which he examines in the second half of the book.

Book Protestant Missions and Local Encounters in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries

Download or read book Protestant Missions and Local Encounters in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries written by Hilde Nielssen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-07-27 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book makes visible an important but largely neglected aspect of Christian missions: its transnational character. An interdisciplinary group of scholars present case-studies on missions and individual missionaries, unified by a common vision of expanding a Christian Empire “to the ends of the world”. Examples range from Madagascar, South-Africa, Palestine, Turkey, Tibet, Germany, Norway, the Netherlands, Canada and Britain. Engaging in activities from education, health care and development aid to religion, ethnography and collection of material culture, Christian missionaries considered themselves as global actors working for the benefit of common humanity. Yet, the missionaries came from, and operated within a variety of nation-states. Thus this volume demonstrates how processes on a national level are closely linked to larger transnational processes.

Book A Study of the Emergence and Early Development of Selected Protestant Chinese Churches in the Philippines

Download or read book A Study of the Emergence and Early Development of Selected Protestant Chinese Churches in the Philippines written by Jean Uy Uayan and published by Langham Publishing. This book was released on 2017-06-30 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr Jean Uayan comprehensively weaves the story of six Protestant Chinese churches in the Philippines into the local history of their individual settings in this important study. Uncovering new insight and historical information from extensive primary and secondary sources, Uayan presents a rich and previously unacknowledged heritage and support from four American mission organisations during the US occupation from 1898–1946. The seeds sown amongst Chinese communities across the Philippines resulted in indigenous churches that took differing journeys to full independence and now are also bearing fruit in missionary activity in South Fujian, China. This book is an important contribution towards a global church history acknowledging the work of the Holy Spirit establishing and building up the church of Jesus Christ among the nations.

Beginning with a brief look at the social, political, cultural, and religious contexts, Mission in the Early Church tells the story of early Christian missionaries, their methods, and their missiology. This book explores some of the most prominent themes of mission in early Christianity, including suffering, evangelism, Bible translation, contextualization, ministry in Word and deed, and the church. Based on this survey, modern readers are invited to a conversation that considers how early Christian mission might inform global mission thought and practice today.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Christian Missions In its origin and history, Christianity stands dis tinguished from all the ethnic religions, or religions of some particular nation or race. Many religions have had their home exclusively within single races or peoples, making no effort, and showing no abil ity, to go farther in the world. Such were the religions of ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, Scandi navia: such also is Hinduism, which is the religion of India alone; and reveals no missionary feeling toward mankind. Such is the religion Of China, which goes beyond its native realm only to influ ence kindred peoples. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Banner-carrying Salvation Army marchers, stone-silent Quakers, jumpy Midwestern revivalists, and Prayer-book Anglicans all made up the mixed multitude sent to the Middle Kingdom by the China Inland Mission (CIM) in the nineteenth century. In China's Millions veteran historian Alvyn Austin crafts a compelling narrative of the sprawling history of the China Inland Mission. This book introduces readers to a remarkable array of sights, from the visionary, charismatic sect-leader Pastor Hsi, to the "wordless book," a missionary teaching device that fit perfectly with Chinese color cosmology, to the opium-soaked aftermath of the North China Famine of 187779. Clear, readable, and well researched, China's Millions digs deeply into the Chinese and Western past to tell a story of the strange yet hopeful result of two cultures colliding. - Publisher.
