Book A Study of Boron Halide

Download or read book A Study of Boron Halide written by A. F. Armington and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attempts were made to produce Lewis acid complexes of boron triiodide, tribromide and trichloride with the triiodides, tribromides and trichlorides of phosphorus, arsenic and antimony. The experimental method used involved the combining of the reagents in carbon disulfide at reduced temperatures. Of the 27 possible complexes, only 6 were formed. Of these only 4 complexes are stable. These are boron triiodide-phosphorus triiodide, boron triiodide-phosphorus bromide, boron-tribromide-phosphorus triiodide and boron tribromide-phosphorus bromide. Boron-triiodide-phosphorus trichloride and boron tribromide-phosphorus trichloride formed, were not stable, however, and did undergo cross halogenation and decomposition. Results of this are compared with other studies for these compounds which have been prepared in the literature. Some properties of the stable complexes are evaluated qualitatively. (Author).

Download or read book Binary Fluorides written by Donald T. Hawkins and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coverage For some time, we have contemplated a comprehensive review of the structures and force fields of the binary fluorides. This bibliography of 1498 references marks the first step of that effort. We are pub lishing this material now rather than waiting until the review is complete some two years hence because we believe that the information already accumulated will be of immediate use to a broad spectrum of researchers. Anyone ambitious enough to read through all the articles on binary fluorides will find that the struc tures and force fields of many of these molecules are at present unknown. For example, it has not been clearly established to which point group(s) the lanthanide trifluorides should be assigned. There remain interesting problems relating to the role of Jahn-Teller and pseudo-Jahn-Teller distortions in some of the transition metal fluorides such as VF , MoF , ReF , and ReF , to name only a few. One s s 6 7 also finds fascinating examples of large-amplitude motions, or pseudorotations, as they are often called, in such molecules as XeF 6, I F 7, and PF 5' For those binary fluorides whose equilibrium geometries are precisely known, there still exists the problem of accurately determining the harmonic force field. In a few cases, most notably the Group VA trifluorides, there has been some attempt made at extracting the cubic and quartic contributions to the force field.

Book Low Temperature Thermal Analysis of Some Boron Halide Complexes with Weak Lewis Bases

Download or read book Low Temperature Thermal Analysis of Some Boron Halide Complexes with Weak Lewis Bases written by Ronald Edwin Lerch and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal analysis was used to investigate the following seven systems: H2S-B2F4, SOF2-B2F4, COC12-B2F4, SF4-B2F4, Xe-BF3, NF3-BF3, and NF3-BC13. In two of the seven systems compound formation was observed. In the system, H2S-B2F4 the compounds H2S[superscript .]B2F4 and 2H2S[superscript .]B2F4 are formed. The compound H2S[superscript .]B2F4 has a melting point of -94.99 ± 0.3° C while the compound 2H2S[superscript .]B2F4 melts at -100.3 ± 0.3° C. The system has three eutectics at 16.2, 35.2 and 50.5 mole percent B2F4 and at -107.4 ± 0.3° C, -100.4 ± 0.3° C, and -94.9 ± 0.3° C, respectively. In the system, SF4-B2F4 the compound SF4[superscript .]B2F4 is formed. The SF4[superscript .]B2F4 slowly decomposes at room temperature. Two eutectics are found in the phase diagram at 3 ± 2 and 98 ± 2 mole percent B2F4 and at -116.3 ± 0.5° C and -59.8 ± 0.5° C, respectively. The system, SOF2-B2F4 has a single eutectic at 24 mole percent B2F4 and a temperature of -141.7 ± 0.5° C. The two components are completely miscible. The system, COC12-B2F4 has a single eutectic at four mole percent B2F4 and a temperature of -132.5 ± 0.5° C. The two components are completely miscible. The compounds Xe and BF3 are immiscible although BF3 is slightly soluble in liquid Xe. Xe is completely insoluble in liquid BF3. The compounds NF3 and BF3 are immiscible although NF3 is slightly soluble in liquid BF3. The solubility of BF3 in liquid NF3 was not investigated. The compounds NF3 and BC13 are immiscible with NF3 being very slightly soluble in liquid BC13. The solubility of BC13 in liquid NF3 was not investigated. BF3 is shown to displace B2F4 from the complex SF4[superscript .]B2F4 in 93% yield. BF3 is a stronger Lewis acid than either BC13 or B2F4 toward the Lewis bases SOF2 and COC12 on the basis of compound formation. No conclusion can be drawn about the relative acid strengths of BC13 and B2F4 relative to these two bases. Based on acid displacement, BF3 is a stronger Lewis acid than B2F4 relative to the Lewis base SF4. Toward the Lewis base H2S, the order of increasing Lewis acidity appears to be B2F4
