Book A Study of Black Officer Candidate Attrition in the United States Air Force

Download or read book A Study of Black Officer Candidate Attrition in the United States Air Force written by Rodney D. Carroll and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated the correlation between measures of academic achievement and success in the Air Force commissioning process. The correlation between area of high school attendance and success was also examined. Any significant differences in the correlations for black officer candidates and other officer candidates were determined. An extensive literature review revealed that no similar Air Force study had ever been conducted. Discriminant function analysis was performed on a sample of approximately 14,600 U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) cadets and 6,500 Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC) cadets. The researchers found that measures of past academic success were only slightly correlated with success. The researchers also found that although area of high school attendance was slightly correlated with success for other USAFA candidates, there was no correlation for black candidates. The researchers concluded that using these factors alone to predict success would be inadequate. There are other non-quantitative factors that are crucial to predicting commissioning success. Furthermore, there are unique non-quantitative factors that are crucial to predicting success for black cadets. The authors stress the need to continue this research. Potential areas of future research are suggested. U.S. Air Force, Blacks, Cadets, Attrition, Officer training.

This book was released on 2021-03-02 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The USAir Force human capital management (HCM) system is not easily defined or mapped. It affects virtually every part of the Air Force because workforce policies, procedures, and processes impact all offices and organizations that include Airmen and responsibilities and relationships change regularly. To ensure the readiness of Airmen to fulfill the mission of the Air Force, strategic approaches are developed and issued through guidance and actions of the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Manpower, Personnel and Services and the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Manpower and Reserve Affairs. Strengthening US Air Force Human Capital Management assesses and strengthens the various U.S. Air Force initiatives and programs working to improve person-job match and human capital management in coordinated support of optimal mission capability. This report considers the opportunities and challenges associated with related interests and needs across the USAF HCM system as a whole, and makes recommendations to inform improvements to USAF personnel selection and classification and other critical system components across career trajectories. Strengthening US Air Force Human Capital Management offers the Air Force a strategic approach, across a connected HCM system, to develop 21st century human capital capabilities essential for the success of 21st century Airmen.

Book Disparity in Black Officer Promotions

Download or read book Disparity in Black Officer Promotions written by Benjamin James McClellan and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "People of color generally, and Blacks specifically, are underrepresented in the US Army's officer corps, especially in the general officer grades. Studies show that Black officers have both a lower promotion rate and a higher attrition rate when compared to White officers. Underrepresentation exacerbates Black officer accessions, employment, promotion, and retention. This quantitative study explored implicit racial bias among a diverse group of US Army officers to determine if a negative racial bias exists against Black US Army officers. The study used a Racial Implicit Association Test (IAT) to measure the strength of racial preference. Findings from the data indicate there is a strong implicit preference for Whites and a less favorable preference for Blacks among US Army officers. The presence of implicit racial bias in military decision-making, specifically in employment, promotions, and retention, raises concerns about achieving equality within all military branches. The study concluded that there is a need for a more stringent Equal Employment Opportunity policy within the military. Cultural and policy changes, diversity training, bias mitigation techniques, and application of Title VII are needed to decrease the adverse effects of continued implicit racial bias. Such changes would improve the current policy, increase equality, and decrease the harm caused to the careers of Black officers"--Author's abstract.

Book Factors Influencing the Turnover of Rated United States Air Force Officers with Less Than Eleven Years of Service

Download or read book Factors Influencing the Turnover of Rated United States Air Force Officers with Less Than Eleven Years of Service written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A current major problem facing Air Force managers is the retention of pilots and navigators in the six to eleven year group. this research uses a conceptual model of turnover as the structure for the study of the pilot and navigator exodus. The USAF Officer Exit Survey, designed and administered by AFMPC, was used as the data base to ascertain the significant determinants of turnover. Assignment policies, satisfaction with supervisory style, pay and benefits were significant determinants for both pilots and navigators. In addition, the opportunity for civilian employment was a significant determinant of turnover for pilots. The authors recommended that the Air Force expand its efforts to improve assignment policies. Some ideas that could be pursued were recommended by the authors. (Author).
