Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled "A Study of Automatic Expansion of Chinese Abbreviations" Submitted By Lee Hiu Wing Doris for the degree of Master of Arts at The University of Hong Kong in August, 2005 Abbreviations are commonly used in modern Chinese texts such as news articles. The number of abbreviations is also increasing rapidly. However, abbreviations are usually unknown to Natural Language Processing (NLP) systems and create difficulties in accurate processing of Chinese texts. Automatic expansion of Chinese abbreviations is especially important to certain NLP systems such as information retrieval, text data mining or machine translation. In this study, a rule-based approach to automatic Chinese abbreviation expansion is introduced. The formation of abbreviations of named entities is first investigated as a case study. The underlying principals of abbreviation formations found are then applied to design a system for expanding Chinese abbreviations. A dictionary is first consulted. For abbreviations that do not exist in the dictionary, an expansion on a morphological basis is performed. A mapping table is designed to map a shortened morpheme or word in an abbreviation to its original full form. Expansion rules and related context information extracted from Chinese texts are then used for disambiguation. This rule-based approach is found to be successful in expanding different unknown and ambiguous abbreviations. Book Planning non existent dictionaries

Download or read book Planning non existent dictionaries written by João Paulo Silvestre and published by Centro de Linguística da Universidade de Lisboa. This book was released on 2015 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an increasing number of dictionary types and lexical search-tools designed to respond to an ever-growing array of user needs. The quest for innovation, however, is not over and this is what this book shall shed light on. In the autumn of 2013, a conference entitled Planning non-existent dictionaries was held at the University of Lisbon. Scholars and lexicographers were invited to present and submit for discussion their research and practices, focusing on aspects that are traditionally perceived as shortcomings by dictionary makers and dictionary users. The topics for debate were intended to be provocative: the identification of dictionary types that have never been developed for certain languages or for a given lexical domain, as well as typological and linguistic problems that may compromise the development of lexicographic projects. We hoped that the discussion would lead to the presentation of problem-solving strategies, especially those related to corpora documentation, information technology and data presentation. We received an incredible response and have had the opportunity to acknowledge several projects that are different in size, novelty and degree of accomplishment.

Book Internationalizing China

Download or read book Internationalizing China written by David Zweig and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-31 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China began opening to the outside world in 1978. This process was designed to remain under the state's control. But the relative value of goods and services inside and outside China drove cities, enterprises, local governments, andindividuals with comparative advantage in international transactions to seek global linkages. These contacts, David Zweig asserts, led to the deregulation of China's mercantilist regime. Through extensive field research, Zweig surveys the extraordinary changes in four sectors of China's domestic political economy: the establishment of developmentzones, rural joint ventures, the struggle over foreign aid and higher education. He also addresses the crucial question of whether, on balance, internationalization weakens or strengthens state power.
