Book A Study of Attitude Stability of a Symmetrical Satellite in a Circular Orbit

Download or read book A Study of Attitude Stability of a Symmetrical Satellite in a Circular Orbit written by Hsien-tsan Wang and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A model for analytical study of the attitude stability of an orbiting satellite consists of a rigid body whose mass center is constrained to move at constant speed in a circular path about the center of an inverse-square force field. The body is assumed to have one axis of inertial symmetry. It is of primary interest here to determine whether the attitude of this symmetric axis is stable in its various equilibrium positions. The stability depends upon two parameters: the ratio of spin velocity about the symmetry axis to orbital angular velocity, and the ratio of the two moments of inertia of the satellite. The equations of motion which govern the deviations of the symmetry axis from its equilibrium configuration are nonlinear in nature. When linearized, the equations show instability in some regions, but everywhere else, the linear approximation is a "critical case" in which the roots of the characteristic equation all have zero real part. When complete nonlinear equations are investigated by means of the direct method of Lyapunov, some region can be specified as Lyapunov stable by using the Hamiltonian function as a Lyapunov function, while there remains a sizeable region where the stability has not been determined, as shown in papers by Pringle and Likins, When equations which are approximated by third and fifth powers are investigated by a series of transformations following Malkin's approach, it is found that if there is instability in the remainder of plane where no conclusion is yet available, it is very weak.

Book Attitude Stability of a Symmetrical Satellite with Translational Rotational Coupling

This book was released on 1969 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The equations which govern the motion of a rigid satellite in an inverse-square force field exhibit a weak coupling between the translation of, and the rotation about the center of mass. The effects of this translational-rotational coupling on the equilibrium positions in a circular orbit, and their stabilities are examined. Linearized equations determine unstable regions in the space of the three parameters in the system. Following an energy test method of Routh, the complete equations are examined to determine stability where the linearized equations give characteristic roots with zero real parts. The effect of the coupling is a slight shift in some of the boundaries between stable and unstable regions. It does not upset the stability of the system, studied previously, in which the coupling is neglected.

Book The Attitude Stability of a Rigid Satellite in a Circular Orbit

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the motions of any orbiting satellite about its center of mass constitutes an important problem. The rotational motion of a satellite is highly complex; the geometry and mass distribution can be quite general, the initial data are usually arbitrary, and the stable motion is significantly influenced by a multiplicity of factors. The modern research tools provide new paths of attack and yield some novel results not only for satellite motion but also for celestial bodies. In this study, the attitude stability of a rigid satellite under the influence of the gravitational torques in a circular orbit is investigated by both analytical and numerical approaches. For the analvtical approach. the Hamiltoııian of the attitude motion of the satellite about an equilibrium point is expanded up to the terms of degree four and is then brought to the Birkhoff normal form. Then by applying the Tkhai's theorem, which is an extention of the KAM theory, the specific stabilitv problem of DeBra-Delp satellite, for which the linearized techniques for the stability are inconclusive and no Lvapunov function is known, is solved ın parameter space. DifFerent numerical approaches are applied to the nonlinear set of equations of the attitude motion for a rigid satellite in a circular orbit. First, the nutation angle variations in DeBra-Delp region is investigated, by which new stability channels for the DeBra-Delp satellites are discovered. Second, phase space analysis is given, in order to understand the structure of the trajectories depending on the initial conditions and the system parameters, by which chaotic solutions are fonnd. Finally, Lyapunov exponents of the system are eomputed to gain deeper understanding of the chaotic or fractal characteristies of the attitude motion. These approaches applied in this study resolve the questions under discussion and open the door for the stability analysis of higher order conservative systems, not amenable to traditional tools.

Download or read book Proceedings of the XXth International Astronautical Congress written by P. Contensou and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 1066 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings of the XXth International Astronautical Congress compiles selected papers presented at the 20th International Astronautical Congress held in Mar del Plata, Argentina in 1969. This book is divided into five main topics—spacecraft engineering, astrodynamics, astrionics, bioastronautics, and problems of education. In these topics, this compilation specifically discusses the equatorial vibrations of a long flexible boom on a spin-stabilized satellite of non-zero radius; heat transfer to linear bodies in two-dimensional hypersonic low density; and limits of accuracy of general perturbations for satellites moving under constant forces. The rapid optimization of multiple-burn rocket flights; data transmission for planetary studies; and comparison of theoretical and experimental attitude data for the DODGE spacecraft are also elaborated. This text also covers the Apollo life-support and protective systems; bioastronautical aspects of Apollo biomedical operations; and development and applications of hot water rockets. This publication is recommended for astrophysicists and scientists of other disciplines related to astronomy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts, which has appeared in semi-annual volumes since 1969, is de voted to the recording, summarizing and indexing of astronomical publications throughout the world. It is prepared under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union (according to a resolution adopted at the 14th General Assembly in 1970). Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts aims to present a comprehensive documentation of literature in all fields of astronomy and astrophysics. Every effort will be made to ensure that the average time interval between the date of receipt of the original literature and publication of the abstracts will not exceed eight months. This time interval is near to that achieved by monthly abstracting journals, com pared to which our system of accumulating abstracts for about six months offers the advantage of greater convenience for the user. Volume 6 contains literature published in 1971 and received before March 15, 1972; some older liter ature which was received late and which is not recorded in earlier volumes is also included.
