Book Successful Educational Actions for Inclusion and Social Cohesion in Europe

Download or read book Successful Educational Actions for Inclusion and Social Cohesion in Europe written by Ramon Flecha (Ed.) and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-14 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph analyses and describes successful educational actions with a specific focus on vulnerable groups (i.e. youth, migrants, cultural groups e.g. Roma, women, and people with disabilities). Concrete data that shows success in school performance in subject matters such as math or language will be provided, as well as children, teachers and families accounts of the impact of this success. Alongside, there is an analysis of the relationship between these children’s educational performance with their inclusion or exclusion from different areas of society (i.e. housing, health, employment, and social and political participation). Many studies have already diagnosed and described the causes of educational and social exclusion of these vulnerable groups. This monograph, however, provides solutions, that is, actions for success identified through the INCLUD-ED project, thus providing both, contrasted data and solid theoretical background and development. Some examples of these actions are interactive groups (or heterogeneous grouping in the classroom with reorganisation of human resources), extension of the learning time, homework clubs, tutored libraries, family and community educative participation, family education, or dialogic literary gatherings. All these actions have been defined as successful educational actions, which mean that they lead to both efficiency and equity. Finally, recommendations for policy and practice are included and discussed.

Book Discipline with Dignity

Download or read book Discipline with Dignity written by Richard L. Curwin and published by ASCD. This book was released on 2008 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discipline with Dignity details an affirming approach to managing the classroom that promotes respect for self and others. This completely updated 3rd edition offers practical solutions that emphasize relationship building, curriculum relevance, and academic success. The emphasis is on preventing problems by helping students to understand each other, work well together, and develop responsibility for their own actions, but the authors also include intervention strategies for handling common and severe problems in dignified ways. Filled with real-life examples and authentic teacher-student dialogues, Discipline with Dignity is a comprehensive and flexible system of prevention and intervention tools that shows how educators at all levels can *Be fair without necessarily treating every student the same way. *Customize the classroom to reflect today's highly diverse and inclusive student population. *Seek students' help in creating values-based rules and appropriate consequences. *Use humor appropriately and effectively to respond to abusive language. *Fine-tune strategies to resolve issues with chronically misbehaving students and "ringleaders" or bullies. This book is not simply a compendium of strategies for dealing with bad behavior. It is a guide to helping students see themselves in a different way, to changing the way they interact with the world. The strategies innate to this approach help students make informed choices to behave well. When they do, they become more attuned to learning and to understanding how to use what they learn to improve their lives and the lives of others--with dignity.

Book excerpt: It's easy to identify students with negative attitudes toward school, schoolwork and teachers. They're usually bored, disruptive, rebellious, argumentative, withdrawn, inattentive, frequently tardy or frequently absent. Or all of the above! But now-at last-help is available for teachers who care enough to affect a change.Changing Attitudes is the first and only teacher's handbook to address the growing problem of negative attitudes. By using "informal" logic-a.k.a. critical thinking-teachers can now correct negative attitudes and thereby motivate students to learn. The book lays out a three-step strategy: 1. Identify negative attitudes; 2. Show students how to express those attitudes as ideas; 3. Help students analyze the ideas and reach their own conclusions as to their validity. Packed with contemporary examples, the book helps teachers and their students understand and use informal logic to critically examine negative attitudes. Techniques for identifying and classifying the most harmful attitudes, to expose the fallacious thinking underlying them are also included. All teachers.A Longwood Professional Book.
