Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between sexual risk behaviors and factors such as gender, grade level, alcohol use, and HIV knowledge and testing among Hispanic high school students. A quantitative study in which secondary data were utilized from the 2009 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The information collected was obtained for youth in Grades 9-12 who identified themselves as Hispanic-Latino. The sample size was approximately 3,555 Hispanic adolescents. The findings revealed a gender difference in that males tended to engage in more sexual risk behaviors than females. Alcohol use was an indicator for increased sexual risk behaviors. HIV knowledge did not reduce sexual risk behaviors or promote an increase in HIV testing. The findings may help in developing programs to address sexual risk behaviors and to promote a reduction in those behaviors.

The study utilized secondary data from the National Institute of Health, Youth Behavioral Risk Survey of 2007. Findings suggest that among Latino adolescent males there is a statistically significant relationship between alcohol abuse and risky sexual behaviors including onset of first sexual experience and condom use at the last sexual experience. In addition, results indicated that alcohol abuse and multiple sexual partners was approaching statistical significance. Implications of the study on social work practice, policy and future research are discussed in latter chapters.

Book excerpt: Risky sexual behavior is associated with many adverse health outcomes including sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancies. These outcomes are elevated among adolescents and emerging adults and cost the nation billions of dollars annually. Studies show that parental influences (socioeconomic status, monitoring, and communication) play a significant role in reducing risky sexual behaviors among teenagers. However, it is not generally known whether this influence continues into early adulthood, neither has it been studied specifically among the Hispanic/Latino population. Therefore, this study utilized secondary data obtained from Project RED (Reteniendo y Entendiento Diversidad para Salud) and explored whether or not parental factors, cultural identity and gender of 10th graders in Southern California will predict the use of condoms as emerging adults, an important health protective sexual behavior. Logistic regression was used to assess these predictive associations. The sample was composed of 57.6% females and 42.4% males. At Time 1, the respondents' mean age was 15.86 years and 20.93 years at Time 2. Findings of the study indicated that, for the sample, parental communication (OR = 1.116, p = .025) was the only parental factor predictive of condom use in emerging adulthood. However, these predictors lost significance in the aggregate logistic model. The implications of the findings for public health and health education are discussed. Several limitations that reduce the generalizability of the results of this study are also outlined.

Her study presents both data and conclusions that have critical significance for the development of policy aimed at mitigating the devastation of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Book excerpt: Over one million U.S. teenagers become pregnant each year. In addition to pregnancy risk, adolescents are at risk for a variety of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) including AIDS. Little is known regarding the multivariate contributions to adolescent sexual behavior. The following study was designed to test a Developmental Social-Learning Model of adolescent sexual behavior. According to this model, adolescent sexual behavior is a function of maturation, socio-demographic factors, and the social-learning influences of parents, school, media, and peers. These variables in turn impact the knowledge, attitudes, self-efficacy, social skills and drug use of the developing adolescent. Method. The Developmental Social-Learning Model of adolescent sexual behavior was tested in a sample of 404 Anglo and Latino adolescents between the ages of 13 and 17. Data were collected by a face-to-face interview and a videotaped role-play procedure assessing relevant social skills. Hierarchical regression analysis was calculated to assess the relative contribution of variable blocks to the variation in adolescent sexual activity. Hierarchical analyses were also calculated separately for males, females, Anglos, and Latinos. Lastly, hierarchical equations were calculated to assess the utility of the model in explaining the condom behavior of coitally active adolescents. Results. Each of the nine variables blocks contributed significantly to the hierarchical equation, accounting for a total of 58% of the variance in adolescent sexual activity. When calculated differentially for males, females, Anglos, and Latinos, the model remained highly significant for all groups. The hierarchical models of condom use accounted for 28% of the variance in condom use in the first relationship and 49% of the variance in condom use in the last six months. Conclusions. The significant contributions of the variable blocks to the variation in adolescent sexual activity supports the validity of the Developmental Social-Learning Model. Calculations of separate models for males, females, Anglos, and Latinos highlight several important distinctions between these groups. Finally, the application of the model to the condom behavior of coitally active adolescents provides a more thorough understanding of condom behavior and targets specific areas for future interventions.

Book excerpt: In the U.S., the Latino youth population is large and growing rapidly and many Latino youth are sexually active. These relatively high rates of sexual activity are concerning because Latino boys and girls, compared to other youth, have the lowest rate of contraceptive use and high rates of sexually transmitted infections (STI's) and teen pregnancy. Thus, the need for greater attention to factors that influence Latino adolescent sexual health such as sexual risk behavior and attitudes is imperative. An understudied area with respect to Latino youth sexual behavior is the role that an adolescent's perception of his/her body has on sexual risk attitudes and behaviors and the possible moderating role of cultural factors. To address this gap in the literature, this study obtained data from one hundred and fifty Latino adolescents who completed a survey that assessed sexual risk attitudes and intentions, body image, ethnic identity, and acculturation. Results indicated that both weight concerns and shape concerns were marginally positively associated with more positive attitudes towards condoms among females and with less positive attitudes towards condoms among males. Gender did not moderate relations when examining attitudes towards pregnancy and intentions as outcome variables. At lower levels of Anglo acculturation, negative body image was associated with less sexual risk attitudes among females whereas positive body image was associated with higher risk attitudes towards pregnancy among males. At low levels of Mexican Orientation, more positive attitudes towards condoms were associated with negative body image among males. Results indicated that none of the interactions of participant's ethnic identity score with the three body image variables were significant in predicting sexual risk attitudes or intentions for either females or males. The findings shed light on the role of body image and cultural factors on sexual risk attitudes and intentions among Latino adolescents.

The two papers comprising this dissertation utilize data from a community sample of Mexican-origin adolescents participating in a prospective, longitudinal research study. Paper 1 examines the longitudinal relationship between ethnic discrimination and adolescent substance use behaviors. This study extends previous work by examining these processes in children of Mexican origin, who are often neglected in research on discrimination. Findings reveal that ethnic discrimination from peers at school predicts increases in substance use across a five-year period of adolescence. Paper 1 also assesses supportive parenting as a source of resilience by investigating potential compensatory and buffering effects on adolescent drug and alcohol use. Paper 2 examines the extent to which, during the transition from late childhood into adolescence, individual and contextual characteristics of female youth predict engagement in risky sexual behavior. This paper addresses a need in the current literature on sexual risk-taking by investigating predictors of this behavior for girls of Mexican origin, who often report higher levels of risky sexual behavior than other ethnic groups. Results indicate that early pubertal development and affiliating with deviant peers are important direct predictors of later sexual behavior. This study also examines indirect and transactional relationships between study variables. Together, these papers enhance our understanding of the family, peer, and personal characteristics of minority children that influence the development of health risk behaviors.

Chapter 2 presents a study separately testing a multivariate model and its association with alcohol and tobacco use. Peer modeling emerged as significant for both alcohol and tobacco use, but parental consistency was only associated with alcohol use. This finding indicates a potential difference in the uptake of these two substances, and suggests a potential point of intervention for future studies. The independent variable for chapter 3 was gateway drug use (alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana). Chapter 3 includes a comparison between parent-adolescent dyad perceptions of parents' parenting practices. Only variables reported by adolescents were significantly related to gateway drug use. The discrepancies in predictive value between parent and adolescent reports represent a new finding among Latinos and imply a need for higher quality measures of parenting practices. Chapter 4 includes an exploratory study of the built environment and its association with gateway drug use, while controlling for potential confounding variables. This study involved the use of geocoded participant addresses and their proximity to alcohol and tobacco retailers. Results from this study suggest possible gender differences related to use of gateway drugs in neighborhoods determined as high-risk. Female rates of gateway drug use were lowest in areas closest to retailers. Such areas demonstrated less favorable demographic characteristics. Future studies should explore the possibility of differential gender-related influences (e.g., parents are more controlling of girls vs. boys in high risk areas) that may impact use of alcohol, tobacco, or marijuana. Together these studies extend our current understanding of risk factors and correlates of substance use among Latino adolescents living along the US/Mexico border.
