Book Assessing Internal Stakeholder Support for a School based Family Systems Counseling Intervention in an Economically Diverse Suburban School District

Download or read book Assessing Internal Stakeholder Support for a School based Family Systems Counseling Intervention in an Economically Diverse Suburban School District written by Susan M. Denslow and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this research was to ascertain the perceived need for a school-based family counseling program by school administrators, teachers, support staff and Board of Education members in an economically diverse suburban school district in the Northeastern United States. This research examined whether internal stakeholders, including district administrators, faculty, staff, and School Board members perceive that current practices in the school district are adequate to meet student mental health needs that are barriers to learning. In addition, this proposed study assessed internal stakeholders' perceptions of the potential for a school-based family counseling center to address student barriers to learning. In order to address the topics of inquiry, a mixed-methods research approach was used, that included an internal survey administered electronically and focus groups comprised of participants who responded to the survey. One hundred twenty-two survey responses were received and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Two focus groups of five participants each were facilitated by the principal researcher for this study. Focus group data was analyzed according to themes and how these themes provided depth of meaning to the survey data. Results of this study indicated that current mental health services were perceived to be inadequate in addressing what was determined to be the most common barriers to student learning in the district. Focus group discussion further emphasized this perception. Furthermore, the results of this study indicated that the majority of respondents supported the intervention of family counseling to address student barriers to learning. However, further analysis showed that the majority of respondents who were teachers favored community intervention for family counseling services, while those respondents in service provider roles, including school counselors and school psychologists, favored a school-based family counseling program with school personnel providing the service. In conclusion, this research provides evidence that additional mental health programs are perceived as necessary by stakeholders who are employed by the district, including teachers and support staff who have daily contact with students. Results of this research indicate a perceived need for the intervention of a family counseling program in the school district. District leaders can use the results of this research for programmatic development. Furthermore, this study will serve as an exemplar for school districts with similar demographics who are contemplating the implementation of a school-based family counseling program"--Leaves vi-vii.
