Book A Study of Self concept in At risk Middle School Children Related to Behavior and Academic Performance

Download or read book A Study of Self concept in At risk Middle School Children Related to Behavior and Academic Performance written by Tara Wade and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore the factors that are associated with the development of self-concept and how self-concept influences or interacts with academic performance and behavior. This research study asked two questions: (1) what assists in the development of self-concept, and (2) how does self-concept impact academic performance and behavior in at-risk middle school students? Using evidence-based research, parental involvement, gender, and ethnicity were selected as key factors associated with the development of self-concept in adolescence. This study proposed that students with high self-concept would have positive academic and behavioral performance. Consequently, students with low self-concept would have negative academic and behavioral performance. To address this issue, this study selected an exploratory descriptive quantitative design and used self-report. Data gathered on parental involvement, gender, and ethnicity suggested a trend towards adolescent self-concept. However, the data did not support the hypothesis that students with high self-concept would have positive academic and behavioral performance and students with low self-concept would have negative academic and behavioral performance. Overall, students with average self-concept, overall, had the best grades, attendance, and behavior, when compared to students with above average or below average self-concept.

Book Self Concept Clarity and Self Esteem in Adolescence

Download or read book Self Concept Clarity and Self Esteem in Adolescence written by Danielle Findley and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-concept clarity reflects the consistency or structure of self-concepts, and is distinct yet related to self-esteem or valence of feelings towards the self. However, research on self-concept clarity is novel and mostly conducted in adults only; studies on self-concept clarity in adolescence are limited. In the present study, self-concept clarity was examined as a related yet distinct construct from self-esteem in middle school. Factor structure and criterion validity of self-concept clarity and self-esteem was established by using factor analysis and examining associations with self- and teacher-reported psychological, behavioral, and academic indices of adjustment. Moreover, mean level gender, grade, and ethnic differences are discussed. Overall, results suggest that assessing both structure (self-concept clarity) and valence (self-esteem) of self-concepts allows for the most thorough understanding of adolescent adjustment. Specifically, self-concept clarity and self-esteem emerged as separate factors with unique associations with the adjustment indices. Findings are expected to extend past research on self-concept clarity to adolescence, and contribute to the study of sense of self and adjustment in middle school.

Book The Impact of Psychoeducational Workshops on Self concept of Middle School Male Students

Download or read book The Impact of Psychoeducational Workshops on Self concept of Middle School Male Students written by Aaron Berro Krugman and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The present study explored the effects of a six week psychoeducational group for at-risk middle school males on self-concept. The study included 36 participants from 5 schools in an urban area of Southern California. Previous research has explored similar groups for females in the same population, but little research focuses on the effectiveness of self-concept groups for males. The current study predicted that male identity may be an effective way to join and unite group members through the shared experience of being male and create a pathway for exploring self-concept in the process. The results indicate minor increases in self-concept according to the Piers-Harris Self-Concept Scale, Second Edition. However, results were found not to be statistically significant in self-concept, behavioral adjustment, freedom from anxiety, social functioning, and happiness and satisfaction after the six week groups. This study found that using male identity as a modality for exploring self-concept with at-risk middle school males may be effective, but future research should corroborate these findings. The implications, limitations and suggestions for further research are discussed.
