Book excerpt: The objective of this program was to develop a continuous wave chemical laser using OH or OD as the lasing species. Chemi-excited OH(OD) was produced by reaction of hydrogen (deuterium) atoms with ozone (O3). Sidelight spectroscopy was employed to verify the presence of chemi-excited OH and to estimate the concentrations of OH in various excited vibrational states. The existence of a partial inversion on the vibration-rotation levels of OH in its electronic ground state was established. The results were rationalized in terms of a simple kinetic model in which the hydrogen atoms are the limiting reagent. Using the data obtained in this program, the improvements in technology required to achieve lasing from OD in a device of practical size have been identified, and specific recommendations for obtaining these improvements have been put forward. Book excerpt: A supersonic purely chemical continuous wave HCl laser is described in which nonequilibrium concentrations of atomic chlorine are generated by the branch-chain reaction of NO with ClO2. The ClO2 is injected into a stream of NO in helium immediately upstream of the throat of a slit nozzle. The reacting gases then expand as a free-jet into a low-pressure region where HI is added to rapidly form vibrationally excited HCl. The maximum HCl multiline output power of 35 W obtained represents a chemical efficiency of approximately 4.5% based on the total exothermicity of the pumping reaction and the limiting flow rate of HI. Book excerpt: Laser emission from vibrationally excited HCl has been achieved in a transverse flow system whose pumping energy relied upon the reaction Cl + HBr yield HCl + Br. For these experiments the chlorine atoms were produced in situ from the chemical reaction of N0 with ClO2. The observed maximum output power of 0.34 W was approximately one third the output power if hydrogen iodide was substituted for HBr. Loss of HCl vibrational quanta through collisions with HBr is believed to be a severe limitation on Cl + HBr system and probably accounts for the reduced HCl laser efficiency of Cl + HBr compared with Cl + HI along with the reduced exothermicity of the pumping reactio.
