Book Prehistoric Man Classic Reprint

Download or read book Prehistoric Man Classic Reprint written by Joseph McCabe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prehistoric Man Few phases of the scientific doctrine of evolution have a greater fascination than the long story of the rise of man from his primitive level of stunted savagery to the fulness of modern civilisation. During a period of stupendous length man wandered over the earth without even the rudiments of culture. Our present knowledge puts the dawn of civilisation, in the valley of the Nile and on the heights above the valley of Mesopotamia, at about years ago. But man had then existed on this planet during a period which hardly any competent student would now estimate at less than years. In that long night preceding the dawn of history were slowly shaped the ideas and institutions from which civilisation would eventually issue. To trace the lines of this gradual rise, to restore the forms and the habits of the strange races of men who Spread over the planet, to indicate the causes of their progress or their halting on the upward path, is the aim of the present manual. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prehistoric Man, Vol. 2 of 2: Researches Into the Origin of Civilization in the Old and the New World So far as we can now infer from the evidence fur nished by native arts and relies connected with the use of the tobacco-plant, it seems to have been as familiar to most of the ancient tribes of the North-west, and the aborigines of the Canadian forests, as to those of the American tropics, of which the Nicotiana tabacum is believed to be a native. No such remarkable deposi tories indeed have been found to the north of the great chain of lakes as those disclosed to the explorers of the tumuli of Mound City, in the Scioto Valley; but even now the tobacco - pipe monopolizes the ingenious art of many of the wild forest-tribes of the continent, and some of their most curious legends and supersti tions are connected with the favourite national imple ment. Among them it retains the dignity of a time honoured institution, the sacredness of which still survives with much of its ancient force and to this accordingly the student of America's primeval anti quities is justified in turning, as an important link connecting the present with that ancient past. \vhen referring to the miniature sculptures procured from the mounds of the Ohio and Scioto valleys, Messrs. Squier and Davis remark From the appearance of these relics it is fairly inferable that among the mound-builders,3: vi] #00170 4 rts am) 5 upersti tions. Book Democracy and Education

Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.
