Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study in Socialism I know if you do not ask me, said St. Augustine, when asked: What is Time? Most of us feel that we know what Socialism is until we begin to define it. It may be called a modern social phenomenon. It springs from modern industrial conditions as they are combined with the more modern phases of sentiment and thought. A more particular definition would only invite criticism and dispute. Socialists themselves are not agreed on a definition. One says it is a religious movement,1 another a moral movement,2 another, a humanitarian movement.3 In the Communist Manifesto it is termed a proletarian movement, in the Chicago platform, a purely economic movement, in the Gotha and Erfurt Programs and other official utterances in Europe and America, a revolutionary movement, a political movement, a working-class move ment, a movement for the abolition of classes, for better working conditions, for social justice, for the emancipa tion of labor, etc., etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Studies in Socialism Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies in Socialism Classic Reprint written by Jean Jaures and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Socialism The following essays were first published in a Socialist daily paper in Paris, and are therefore addressed to a public not only well versed in the main theories of Socialism, but in the various questions that have arisen since Socialist ideas have ceased to be merely theories and have be come crystallised into party programmes. In America, however, we cannot take for granted, as M. Jaures does, a familiarity with these ideas, and it has therefore seemed best to prefix to a translation of his essays a summary of the funda mental Socialist theories and of the various methods advocated. Although Socialists differ upon many points, they all agree on the following main definition: Socialism is the doctrine that the means of pro duction (that is, capital, land, and raw materials, or in other words, all wealth which is used for the creation of more wealth) should not be owned by individuals, but by society. In the lightning-riven gulfs of the great catastrophe, Capitalism and the dominant moderate Socialism a reach appearing in their true character and proportions, each proven unfit to direct the destiny of the world. Book A History of Socialism Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Socialism Classic Reprint written by Thomas Kirkup and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Socialism We all know that the propaganda of socialism has been attended with intemperate and violent language with wild opinions which are often inconsistent with the first principles of social order, with revolutionary outbreaks leading to bloodshed, desolation and long-con tinned unrest and suspicion. These things are greatly to be deplored. But we shall be wise if we regard them as symptoms of wide-spread and deep-seated social disease. The best way to cure such disease is to study and remove the causes of it. No physician will have any success in combating a malady if he content him self with suppressing its symptoms. For the study of socialism two things are essential on the part of the reader - good-will and the Open mind. Socialism has at least a most powerful pro visional claim on our good-will, that it professes to represent the cause of the sufferers in the world's long agony, of the working-classes, of women, and of the down-trodden nations and races. If it can make any solid contribution in such a far-reaching cause it has the strongest right to be heard. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied Socialism: A Study of the Application Cation of Principles to the State But my colleagues in suggesting the subject had in mind a larger purpose also. Recognizing the fact that there are certain principles which are essential to a Socialist society, and the fact that there are discernible tendencies of social and eco nomic evolution which Socialists universally regard as evidences of the evolution of society toward So cialism, they felt that it was possible to correlate the principles of Socialism and the Socialist esti mate of economic and social tendencies into a help ful and suggestive outline of the Socialist society of the future, Without departure from the method of science, or wandering into the Elysian Fields of Utopia. Book The New Socialism

Download or read book The New Socialism written by Jane T. Stoddart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Socialism: An Impartial Inquiry The present book occupies, so far as I am aware, new ground among English books on Socialism. The larger historical books on the subject st0p short of recent years, and leave unchronicled much Socialist thought and action of the utmost importance. My aim has been to give as briefly and fairly as possible an account of the Socialist movement over the world during the last ten years. Like everything else, Socialism has undergone a process of change, and must be studied in the works of its latest authorities. Extreme utterances of individuals have been largely disregarded. In such a movement as Socialism much exaggeration was inevitable. But Socialism has its great thinkers and students, men as candid, as thoughtful, and as earnest as any to be found in other camps. These thinkers are constructive as well as destructive. They are not afraid to acknowledge the immense difficulties that have to be conquered ere the goal is reached, and they have taken them up in earnest, admitting in many cases that they are not yet completely solved. That Socialism is a movement full of mighty import to mankind, and that the questions which it raises may at any moment present themselves in their most practical form, is now obvious to all. It is only by understanding what Socialists ask for, and why they ask it, by studying their views and arguments in their best, most considered and most impressive form that any fruitful discussion can be carried on. Book A Short Study of State Socialism Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Short Study of State Socialism Classic Reprint written by Reuben John Bryce and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Study of State Socialism The limits and purpose of this little book would be exceeded if any attempt were made at a detailed account, either of the origin of Socialism, or of the various forms which it has assumed. To trace the growth of the principles upon which Socialism is founded would involve an examination of historical development and would require a separate volume.* Our concern here is with the fact of Socialism. For the purpose of an intelligent understanding of our subject only a brief historical survey is necessary. After that it will be essential to come to some understanding as to what Socialism precisely is, for at present the word is applied most loosely. This little book will attain its object if it facilitate a serious and fruitful study by a delimitation of the ground it should cover, and by the implied suggestion that a final judgment must be arrived at, not on one aspect or one presentment of the case, but after an even-minded review of the whole complex medley of interests, difficulties, dangers, and advantages. Book Introduction to Socialism Classic Reprint

Download or read book Introduction to Socialism Classic Reprint written by Forgotten Books and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Socialism The report is on a crop of bushels, and the commissioner divides the total data by giving the cost for 20 bushels. Human labor 2 hours, 58 minutes (call it 3 hours). Animal labor (an item that we shall later see will soon be eliminated), 8 hours. Twenty bushels for three hours' labor. Add 1-3 that it may more nearly conform with our definition of labor cost, and we have 20 bushels for four hours, or our assumed Socialist day. How many bushels can you now get for a 10-hour day? And mark this, that this report includes every item of labor from the time men go forth to plow the ground until the wheat is sacked and stored in the granary. But men do not go to this work with a single plow, a pair of bob-tailed mules and chain harness - do not go forth to wear them selves out plodding all, day to turn over about one and one-half acres. They go with steam plows and steam threshers; they do the work as it should be done. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Road Ahead

Download or read book The Road Ahead written by Harry W. Laidler and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Road Ahead: A Primer of Capitalism and Socialism A Brilliant American editor has recently written that a period of great change in this country "is not only indicated; it is certain." We in America will soon find ourselves "in one of the great periods of reorganization and pioneering." Other countries have already entered that era. The old generations of Americans have given little attention to social pioneering. They have sought to build up the nation's power to produce and have let it go at that. On the question of distribution they have adopted a policy of drift. Many of these problems will be left for solution to the generation of boys and girls, young men and women, now in the schools and colleges of the country. This generation should begin now to prepare themselves for the great task ahead. This little primer is a modest attempt to help them to make a start in that preparation. It was written chiefly for boys and girls from the seventh to the tenth grades, the higher grades in grammar schools and the lower grades in high schools. It is hoped, however, that interest will not be confined to these groups. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism for Students The Socialism of our time flows out of circumstances existing in the society of'to day, not that of five hundred years ago or ten thousand years ago. Here we at once part company with many non-socialist political economists. Unlike them, we shall not trespass upon Robinson Crusoe's mythical island. The Indian with his bow and arrow shall, for the time being, be allowed to rest his oft-troubled bones in peace in his happy hunting ground; the Esquimaux and South Sea Islanders, too. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Modern Socialism and Labor Fob years I have had a deepening conviction that true economic principle and right economic action were intimately related to Christian morality. As a result of this conviction, I ventured a series of addresses on social questions before audiences of business men and workmen. Through the courtesy of the Providence Daily Journal and the Providence Evening Tele gram, ' 'which published in full, and of the Providence Daily Star and the Boston Herald, which published copious extracts, these addresses were widely circulated.
