Book Tales of and about Jewish Youth During the Fin de si cle Era

Download or read book Tales of and about Jewish Youth During the Fin de si cle Era written by Lawrence M. Ginsburg and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2010 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of Jewish youth in upstate New York during the fin-de-si cledecade of the nineteenth century. Ginsburg details periods of transition for these youths, such as exploring life at various Jewish orphanages, where children were sheltered, educated, and taught trade skills to support themselves thereafter. He profiles The Jewish Tidings, a weekly journal that ran from 1887 to 1897, which heralded itself as "A Fearless Exponent of Progressive Judaism " and polarized Eastern European Jewish immigrants from the predominantly German-Jewish brethren. Ginsburg rounds out his examination of Jewish life during the fin-de-si cle era by profiling figures such as a rabbi and a Jewish match peddler in Syracuse, as well as the Young Men's Hebrew Association and the Jewish Chautauqua Association. Ginsburg, a native of Syracuse, New York, delves into the history of Jewish youths during this era with interest and enthusiasm.

Book Away From Home

Download or read book Away From Home written by Sarah Fathallah and published by Think of Us. This book was released on 2021-07-21 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Institutional placements in foster care are out-of-home, non-family placements where some foster youth are sent to live. Each year, of the hundreds of thousands of youth in foster care, over 43,000 live in institutional placements. These placements disproportionately impact Black youth, other youth of color, older youth, and pregnant and parenting teens. Due to calls to reckon with longstanding institutionalized racism, the spread of COVID-19 through institutions, concern over the use of forceful restraints, emerging research on trauma, and the recent death of 16 year-old Cornelius Fredericks in a Michigan group home, there is a growing body of research and a movement calling for the reduction or elimination of institutional placements in foster care. Missing from this conversation was a deep, nuanced understanding of the experiences and mental models of young people who have recently lived in these places. This study exists to fill that gap.

Book Expanding the Options in Child Placement

Download or read book Expanding the Options in Child Placement written by Anita Weiner and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the basis of a 14-year follow-up study of 268 infants in residential care, the authors evaluate the relative merits of adoption, foster care, return to parents or extended family. They stress the significance of the absentee parent, of social work intervention, the advantages of late adoption and make a case for a new look at residential group care as a viable alternative for dependent children in placement. This is the only study to follow up over 14 years an entire population of infants in residential care. It contains comprehensive data on all placement alternatives to which these children were exposed including adoption. It evaluates the comparative impact of each of these placement paths on the subsequent life of the children and their families.

Noting how trends in expectations and outcomes in foster care have changed over the past 30 years, this comprehensive and critical review of the impact foster care has had on children provides a framework for the critical assessment of trends in programs and policies; identifies what is known and not known concerning the impact of foster care; and offers recommendations for future data collection and research, as well as program and policy development. Book The Systematic Mistreatment of Children in the Foster Care System

Download or read book The Systematic Mistreatment of Children in the Foster Care System written by Lois Weinberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-16 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Systematic Mistreatment of Children in the Foster Care System tells the stories of 10 children in the foster care system from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds and the efforts by advocates to find them permanent places to live, appropriate schooling, and other essentials they need to survive. The children’s case studies highlight the difficulties in placing and maintaining them in healthy living situations with supportive educational, mental health, and other services. The book shows how children fall-sometimes over and over again-through the "deep cracks" that exist within and between the various agencies of the multi-agency system of care that was designed to help them. Appropriate placement and services for children in foster care typically requires the coordination and collaboration of several agencies, including the juvenile court, child protective services (CPS), school districts, and departments of mental health (DMH). The Systematic Mistreatment of Children in the Foster Care System shows how these agencies frequently fail to meet their legal obligations to children in the system and what can be done to address these failures-and the outcomes they produce. The Systematic Mistreatment of Children in the Foster Care System includes: an introduction to the child protective services system the general route by which children in the United States are removed from their parents’ custody because or abuse and neglect the major components of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and the problems in getting foster children’s educational needs met the difficulties in securing stable out-of-home placements strategies for stabilizing home placements problems in funding for out-of-home placements strategies for advocating the removal of children from inadequate out-of-home placements legislation and practices for bringing about needed policy changes and much more Equally valuable as a professional tool and as a classroom resource, The Systematic Mistreatment of Children in the Foster Care System includes introductions to specific issues presented in each chapter; case studies that illuminate the issues presented; subsections for each case study chapter entitled "Prevention," "Intervention," "Advocacy Considerations," and "What Had Gone Wrong;" boxed items highlighting practical strategies, laws, and other relevant information; and a conclusion and summary of each chapter.
