Book excerpt: The seminal work, originally published in two seperate clothbound volumes, is now made available in a revised one-volume edition, both in hardback and in paperback. It brings to light an aesthic passage of European history which has never before received full-scale treatment in English. It explains, historically and with a rich body of illustrations, the origins and momentum of a magnificent movement of German art, and shows, through this powerful and expressive art, how religion and political ideaology were interwined in Ottonian culture from about 950 to 1050. Besides dealing with the great imperials books such as the Gospels of Otto III and the Pericopes Book of Henry II, as well as other splendid liturgical manuscripts, the author also writes with penetrating insight about the great art-loving bishops such as Egbert of Trier and Bernard of Hildesheim, whose aims ans personalitites are express in the books they commissioned. In addition, the most important art centres of the Ottonian Empire - Reichenau, Cologne, Fulda and Corvey - are discussed in detail.

Book excerpt: Cities of Light is the first global overview of modern urban illumination, a development that allows human wakefulness to colonize the night, doubling the hours available for purposeful and industrious activities. Urban lighting is undergoing a revolution due to recent developments in lighting technology, and increased focus on sustainability and human-scaled environments. Cities of Light is expansive in coverage, spanning two centuries and touching on developments on six continents, without diluting its central focus on architectural and urban lighting. Covering history, geography, theory, and speculation in urban lighting, readers will have numerous points of entry into the book, finding it easy to navigate for a quick reference and or a coherent narrative if read straight through. With chapters written by respected scholars and highly-regarded contemporary practitioners, this book will delight students and practitioners of architectural and urban history, area and cultural studies, and lighting design professionals and the institutional and municipal authorities they serve. At a moment when the entire world is being reshaped by new lighting technologies and new design attitudes, the longer history of urban lighting remains fragmentary. Cities of Light aims to provide a global framework for historical studies of urban lighting and to offer a new perspective on the fast-moving developments of lighting today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Color photos. Although the concept of time has been given sociological treatment, light, which is the most powerful organizing force in human existence, has not. The human experience is defined by light. We see, feel, taste, hear, and smell nothing without light waves of varying frequencies interacting with our senses. We assign social value against the standard of light, including to human bodies. We seek transcendence through light, explain God's interaction with the world through light, and determine the laws of physics through light. We can now divide light into tiny bits through which we can endlessly manipulate reality, thus transforming the human experience. But what is light? Light is a social construct, a product of human discourse that has taken place over millennia and across multiple fields of study within a broad range of institutional structures. Structural analysis of this multi-dimensional phenomenon reveals its true significance to humanity.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Direct and Indirect Illumination In order to compare different systems of illumination there must be some means of comparison. Consequently we have the candle power, foot candle, mean spherical candle and etc. The candle power is the unit by which the intensity of a source is measured. Thus a light is said to have an intensity of one candle power when it has the same intensity as a sperm candle which burns 20 grams of sperm in 10 minutes. This is the English unit of intensity. The German unit is 9 of the English. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The City of Light. For many, these four words instantly conjure late nineteenth-century Paris and the garish colors of Toulouse-Lautrec’s iconic posters. More recently, the Eiffel Tower’s nightly show of sparkling electric lights has come to exemplify our fantasies of Parisian nightlife. Though we reflect longingly on such scenes, in Illuminated Paris, Hollis Clayson shows that there’s more to these clichés than meets the eye. In this richly illustrated book, she traces the dramatic evolution of lighting in Paris and how artists responded to the shifting visual and cultural scenes that resulted from these technologies. While older gas lighting produced a haze of orange, new electric lighting was hardly an improvement: the glare of experimental arc lights—themselves dangerous—left figures looking pale and ghoulish. As Clayson shows, artists’ representations of these new colors and shapes reveal turn-of-the-century concerns about modernization as electric lighting came to represent the harsh glare of rapidly accelerating social change. At the same time, in part thanks to American artists visiting the city, these works of art also produced our enduring romantic view of Parisian glamour and its Belle Époque.
