Book Friends Beyond Borders

Download or read book Friends Beyond Borders written by Roger Baumgarte and published by . This book was released on 2013-09-19 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What exactly does it mean to be a close friend? With smart phones, social media and the Internet, the technical barriers to making new friends and keeping up with old ones have all but disappeared. What remains are more subtle borders resulting from cultural diversity, and these can be much more perplexing to navigate. These cultural differences in close friendships are the primary focus of Friends Beyond Borders. It turns out that we in the U.S. think quite differently about our friendships compared to people in many other cultures around the globe. Cross-cultural research shows that people from various cultures can have very different, even conflicting, ideas about what it means to be a good friend. One's friendly intentions can be seen as patently unfriendly by someone from another culture—they simply wouldn't fit with how others think about, feel about, and behave toward their close friends. In Friends Beyond Borders, Roger Baumgarte demystifies these differing approaches to friendship. He describes six distinct cultural styles of close friendship, each comparing what might be typical in the U.S. with what would be found in contrasting cultures. Although each culture might have a dominant style of friendship, he makes it clear that all six of these styles can be found within any given culture, especially one as diverse as the U.S. You will come away from this book thinking about your own friendships, whether or not they cross cultural borders, in new and creative ways. You might very well gain a renewed enthusiasm for your closest friends. Beyond cultural issues, there's also a chapter devoted to Facebook, taking primarily a social research perspective, attempting to explain and defend clearly and empirically what social media have to do with close friendships. The results of these studies surprised even the author. There's a chapter entitled “Friends make good medicine” which reviews the empirical research demonstrating the numerous benefits, including health benefits, of cultivating close and satisfying friendships. People who regularly make time for their friends tend to live much longer, have lower levels of stress, and are even less likely to catch a cold. These are but a sampling of those benefits.Friends Beyond Borders will inspire you to invest more in your close friendships, and help you to appreciate more fully these important people in your lives. Written with a touch of humor and genuine affection, Friends Beyond Borders offers both a researcher's perspective and numerous personal anecdotes about the roles that culture and gender play in our experience of close friendship.

Book Friendship Across Cultures

Download or read book Friendship Across Cultures written by Joyce Yan Lok Mak and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation examined the characteristics and socio-emotional needs of international Chinese students in Canadian high schools and evaluated the outcomes of a program designed to reduce acculturative stress, provide social support, and promote intercultural friendship between international and Canadian students. Twenty-four international students from China (mean age = 16.25 years), eight Canadian students (mean age = 15.56 years), and four teachers from two schools in a large Canadian multicultural metropolis participated in this research. Students participated in the Friendship Across Cultures program in one of two groups: monocultural (international students only) and intercultural (both international and Canadian students). Qualitative and quantitative data were collected pre- and post-intervention on language/literacy skills, acculturative stress, and intercultural and psychosocial functioning. Data on pre-intervention cognitive skills were also gathered. Study 1 examined the needs and characteristics of international, Chinese high school students in Canada from student and teacher perspectives. Most students demonstrated low levels of English ability, wished for more Canadian friends, and did not appear to have clinical levels of mental health symptoms and acculturative stress. They participated in the 10-session Friendship Across Cultures afterschool program, which focused on psychoeducation and social support. Study 2 provides the results of the program evaluation. While comparisons of pre- and post-intervention data were not significant, effect sizes suggested unexpected trends: decreased self-reported intercultural communication competence and increased acculturative stress. Trends were more heightened for intercultural group participants than monocultural group participants, perhaps due to increased self-awareness from cross-cultural contact. Nevertheless, participants in the intercultural group tended to rate the program more positively and did not demonstrate a corresponding increase in psychological symptoms, in contrast to the monocultural group. Exit interviews illustrated that intercultural participants made Canadian friends, increased their understanding of Canadians, and practiced English. Monocultural participants endorsed more knowledge-based aspects (e.g., learning about mental health, how to make friends, and how to adapt to Canadian life). Canadian students endorsed increased understanding of international students, increased empathy for their needs and challenges, learning how to befriend international students, and the value of reaching out. These findings warrant further study. Clinical and educational implications are discussed.

Book A Mixed method Study of Friendship Networks and Psychological and Sociocultural Adaptation Among Chinese International Undergraduates in U s Higher Education

Download or read book A Mixed method Study of Friendship Networks and Psychological and Sociocultural Adaptation Among Chinese International Undergraduates in U s Higher Education written by Mingjun Xie and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, U.S. colleges and universities have observed a rapid expansion of the enrollment of international students. Particularly Chinese students, the largest group of international students since 2010, have increased nearly threefold in just eight years (Institute of International Education, 2010-2018). Prior studies have investigated the friendship networks of international students (Rose-Redwood & Rose-Redwood, 2013) and the influence of peer relations on international students' cross-cultural adaptation (Hendrickson, Rosen, & Aune, 2011). However, the extant literature has largely neglected to examine international students' lived experiences of establishing friendship networks and the underlying mechanism of the associations between friendships and international student adaptation. Guided by social capital theory (Lin, 1999) and acculturation process framework (Ward, Bochner, & Furnham, 2001), the purpose of my dissertation is to examine Chinese students' peer interaction patterns and how friendships influence their psychological well-being and sociocultural adjustment. My dissertation consists of two studies. The first study drew upon two waves of surveys collected with 46 Chinese students (30 females, Mage = 18.89, SD = .80) and multiple in-depth interviews conducted with five students (three females, Mage = 18.40, SD = .89). The results yield three main findings. First, Chinese students of the present study nominated predominant Chinese friends, much more than domestic and other international student friends, in both waves. Second, Chinese students did not necessarily develop more diverse, integrated friendship networks over time. Specifically, more than half of the participants nominated Chinese friends only in both waves, possibly because of language barriers and prior discrimination experiences. Lastly, the interview findings illustrated that Chinese students' engagement in college settings shaped their experiences of building friendship networks, such that greater engagement in meaningful common experiences (such as club activities, religious groups, and experiences of working together) could facilitate cross-cultural interaction between Chinese students and domestic students.Guided by social capital theory (Lin, 1999) and acculturation process framework (Ward, Bochner, & Furnham, 2001), the second study examined: (1) how friendship networks, specifically the national backgrounds of nominated friends, the frequency of contact, and the intimacy of friendships, are associated with psychological and sociocultural adaptation among Chinese undergraduates (N = 273, Mage = 19.18, SD = .84) in U.S. higher education; and (2) the role of social connectedness as a mediator. Results indicated that compared to superficial relationships, high-quality peer interaction (for example, friendships involving both frequent contact and intimacy) might be a key to bolster Chinese students' ability to navigate cross-cultural challenges. Further, social connectedness mediated the associations between friendships and student adaptation, such that frequent and intimate interaction with domestic students was associated with greater social connectedness and, in turn, better psychological and sociocultural adaptation. The findings point to practical implications for the host institutions, especially for universities enrolling large numbers of international students. It is important for the host institutions to develop corresponding programs to facilitate social opportunities for different groups to mingle and establish sustained friendships.

Book The Conceptualization of Friendship by Chinese International Students at a University in the Southeastern United States

Download or read book The Conceptualization of Friendship by Chinese International Students at a University in the Southeastern United States written by Amanda Elizabeth Brunson and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currently the number of international students at higher education institutions in the United States is at an all-time high at nearly one million. International students play a vital role in internationalizing college campuses across America and provide opportunities for American college students to have meaningful interaction with students from different countries and cultures with whom they would not otherwise have the opportunity to interact. As intercultural competence is one of the main goals of internationalization, meaningful intercultural interaction is essential. Unfortunately, many international students struggle to build friendships with American students. The purpose of this qualitative study was to better understand how Chinese international students, at one particular university, conceptualize friendship. Using a constructivist grounded theory approach, I interviewed 33 participants and analyzed the data using initial, focused, and theoretical coding. The findings suggest that Chinese students usually allow friendships to slowly develop over an extended period of time, but once the friendships have formed, they last for a long time. Moreover, I found that reciprocity, in the form of gift giving and helping, was an essential part of friendship maintenance. I also found that the group mentality was an important aspect of friendship. Because of the differences in regards to friendship formation and maintenance, Chinese and American students may have difficulty becoming friends. By understanding how Chinese students perceive friendship, higher education administrators, particularly those in student affairs, may be able to offer more assistance and guidance on how to become friends with Americans--provided the Chinese students want to make friends and welcome the advice. Possible practical implications of this research include seminars on cultural differences and structured on-campus events that encourage meaningful intercultural interaction.

Book International Students Experiences Developing Friendships in U s Higher Education

Download or read book International Students Experiences Developing Friendships in U s Higher Education written by Marisa Atencio and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning outcomes for twenty-first century higher education in the U.S. include graduating students capable of functioning effectively across cultures. The growth in campus internationalization efforts stems from an emphasis on graduates' ability to navigate a complex and rapidly changing world. Strategies to achieve internationalization goals focus on expanding student participation in educational programs outside of the U.S. and enrolling greater numbers of international students. Although, research shows global learning on-campus is possible, resources and attention targeted toward intercultural learning on campus are more limited. Using narrative inquiry, this study explores international college students' experiences making friends in the first year of college in the U.S. as well as the influence, benefits, and challenges of making friends. The findings highlight the value of friendship development for international students and the opportunity to revisit internationalization strategies and goals. Each student expressed worry about making friends in the U.S., that making friends in college was different, that they pursued friendships based on their perception of commonalities, and the benefit of reflecting about the experience of making friends. The majority also expressed desire to develop intercultural friendships. Their experiences making friends were associated with a wide variety curricular or co-curricular activities, with a few occurring before arriving to the U.S. Most students shared positive overall experiences, conveyed satisfaction with their experiences making friends, and developed intercultural friendships. Most students also expressed their friendships enriched their overall college experience, their experiences making friends was connected to stress or mental health experiences, and their intercultural friendship experiences were both rewarding and challenging. A few students with less successful friendship development experiences conveyed a negative impact on their overall college experience and their overall emotional wellbeing. This study highlights the value for institutions to be aware of international students' expectations and experiences making friends, gauge their intercultural skills, and their experiences making friends early in their academic career as well as the necessity to promote a culture of inclusion on campus and provide ample opportunities and adequate support for students to develop intercultural relationships. Their experiences reinforce that intercultural friendships can stimulate global learning for all students.

Book Friendship in Cultural and Personality Psychology

Download or read book Friendship in Cultural and Personality Psychology written by Tobias Altmann and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2021 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Today's world is being shaped by migration and globalization at ever increasing rates. As these forces spread, more and more people with different cultural backgrounds and different personalities come into contact and interact with each other. Not only does this phenomenon pertain to how we work and do business together, but it also applies to the people we spend our leisure time with and trust with our private thoughts and feelings: our friends. Insights from cultural and personality psychology into friendship processes are therefore key to understanding and facilitating friendship processes in these current times of diversified multiculturality and accentuated individuality. The present book presents a selection of current international theoretical perspectives and new empirical insights from scholars in cultural and personality psychology on friendship. Apart from chapters that are primarily from cultural psychology or primarily from personality psychology, there are chapters that apply both perspectives simultaneously as well as two explicitly integrative chapters that integrate the book's chapters into an overarching theoretical framework. The forty authors of the twenty-four chapters in this book come from twenty-nine locations in fifteen countries from around the world. The present book is therefore a paragon of internationality and diversity in and of itself and may be a stepping stone to future integrative research projects on the phenomenon that we refer to as "friendship" so collectively but that we experience so differently"--

Book A Study of the Relationship of Study Abroad and Students Attitudes Toward Diversity and Culture

Download or read book A Study of the Relationship of Study Abroad and Students Attitudes Toward Diversity and Culture written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study considered attitudes toward diversity and culture among college students before and after a study abroad experience. One group of pre-departure participants and one group of returned study abroad participants took part in the study. Differences among group mean scores on the Diversity/Challenge Scale and the Intercultural Sensitivity Scale were analyzed. The literature suggests that assessment of study abroad programs is needed and this study provided information about students' out of class learning in the areas of diversity and culture while on study abroad. The participants were college students at a large Public Research I University in the northeast that participated in a one semester study aboard in the spring of 2004 or the spring of 2005. This was a cross-sectional study and it tested statistical significance of the difference between two mean scores. The study found that there were significant differences between the groups on several individual dimensions and on the overall Openness to Diversity and Intercultural Sensitivity Scales. These results suggested that study abroad did have a significant impact on student learning in these two areas.

Book Buddy Program a Participatory Approach to Cross cultural Adjustment of International Students

Download or read book Buddy Program a Participatory Approach to Cross cultural Adjustment of International Students written by and published by . This book was released on 1905 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International students face many difficulties when they study overseas. Some of these difficulties include language, finances, and adjustment to a new educational, social, and cultural environment. Adaptation to a new environment becomes easier when students enjoy support from educational institutions. It is then necessary for the receiving institution to develop programs that will ease the adjustment process of international students particularly during the critical initial months of their stay. Also, it is equally important for institutions to develop programs that involve the students and individuals who are in close contact with them. TheInternational Centre for Students provides various support to international students from the moment they are accepted to the university until they complete their program. However, prior to the establishment of the Buddy Program in 1995, there was no program at the Centre that provided a continuing support to international students in cross-cultural adjustment. The purpose of this practicum is to design a peer support or a Buddy Program that is participatory and continuing and that will address the cross-cultural adjustment difficulties of international students at the University of Manitoba. This included interviewing international students and individuals who are involved with the education and well-being of international students, meeting with the students and asking them to fill out a rating scale about their participation with the program. The results of the study revealed that the Buddy Program had greatly contributed to the cross-cultural adjustment process of international studen s. It provided opportunity for them to have access to somebody for information they need during the initial adjustment period, to interact or develop friendships with Canadians and individuals from other cultures, and to become aware of and appreciate other cultures.

Book Coming to the United States

Download or read book Coming to the United States written by Margaret E. Baker and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International students studying in the United States encounter a number of challenges that affect their ability to achieve their academic and social goals. These changes and acculturative pressures often influence their psychosocial wellbeing and factor into their satisfaction in their experiences abroad. Forming relationships with host-national students aids international students in their adjustment to life in the U. S. and influences their satisfaction and success both in and out of the classroom. This qualitative study analyzes third culture relationships as well as the challenges to their formation and the negotiations necessary for the relationship’s continued survival. This project explores the experiences of six international/host-national student dyads through individual and joint interviews. Subsequent analyses of this data generated a more substantial understanding of third culture building in international/host-national student relationships and the negotiations that occur as individuals learn of another culture and build a mutually beneficial relationship. Data not only provides further support of the third culture building model, but also gives insight into the experiences of students who interact in university sponsored cross-cultural programs, and how these experiences might be enhanced to facilitate more cross-cultural dialogue.
