Book A Study Guide for Joy of the Gospel by Pope Francis

Download or read book A Study Guide for Joy of the Gospel by Pope Francis written by Norbert Bufka and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-03-11 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pope Francis issued an Apostolic Exhortation in November 2013 to all the Catholics in the world. He urged Catholics and other Christians to share the good news by tending to the wounds of all people, especially the poor and marginalized, in a caring manner. The Catholic Church needs to be an instrument of change in the world, not self-preservation, he wrote. He calls for decentralization of authority and control. The title of the letter is "Joy of the Gospel". This book quotes various parts of the letter and includes 35 sets of questions for reflection. It can be used in many ways:1) Individual reading and reflection to become more knowledgeable of the Catholic Church and staying in tune with current papal thinking. .2) Day of retreat for Catholic groups. A facilitator can easily guide the group discussion with the many questions provided in the book.3) Parish staff studying and planning a course of action. This would involve a more detailed study with follow-up discussions and decision making for implementation of a plan for the parish.4) Parish wide renewal to become a missionary church. 5) Diocesan study and reflection on an action plan for the diocese. This could be in conjunction with any of the above or separate to give parishes some guidance in their reflections. The book includes suggestions for group discussion and reporting to the pastor. For volume discounts on the study guide, contact the author at [email protected] or go to his website at www.thisonly.org. Book excerpt: The perfect gift! A specially priced, beautifully designed hardcover edition of The Joy of the Gospel with a foreword by Robert Barron and an afterword by James Martin, SJ. “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus… In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” – Pope Francis This special edition of Pope Francis's popular message of hope explores themes that are important for believers in the 21st century. Examining the many obstacles to faith and what can be done to overcome those hurdles, he emphasizes the importance of service to God and all his creation. Advocating for “the homeless, the addicted, refugees, indigenous peoples, the elderly who are increasingly isolated and abandoned,” the Holy Father shows us how to respond to poverty and current economic challenges that affect us locally and globally. Ultimately, Pope Francis demonstrates how to develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, “to recognize the traces of God’s Spirit in events great and small.” Profound in its insight, yet warm and accessible in its tone, The Joy of the Gospel is a call to action to live a life motivated by divine love and, in turn, to experience heaven on earth. Includes a foreword by Robert Barron, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith and James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage

Book excerpt: This book examines the central elements of Francis’ vision of the Church as it sets out to preach the gospel to people of every nation and every walk of life. In four chapters, it examines the heart of his message and the focus of his vision for the future of Catholicism, Christianity, and the world. Central to that vision is his call to continue the new evangelization. He writes: “Each individual Christian and every community is called to be an instrument of God for the liberation and promotion of the poor, and for enabling them to be fully a part of society” (EG 187). The pope admits that neither he nor the Church has “a monopoly on the interpretation of social realities or the proposal of solutions to contemporary problems” (EG 184). He wishes, however, to contribute some constructive insights concerning our present situation. For Pope Francis, the joy of the gospel is simple: God wishes to live in our hearts. When we let God do so his Spirit dwells there, purging our imperfections and slowly divinizing us so that as free and faithful disciples we follow the way of the Lord Jesus.

Book excerpt: It seems counterintuitive: conflict can be a blessing. But Catholic theologian and conflict mediator Ann M. Garrido identifies conflict as a potentially fruitful exchange that arises from living and working together in the diverse world God created. Garrido, author of the bestselling Redeeming Administration, offers twelve practical habits for responding to conflict, pairs each habit with a spiritual companion from history, and offers questions and prayers for growth. In Redeeming Conflict, Ann Garrido explains that conversion comes through conversation, that there is a difference between “the truth” and “my truth,” and that you should be curious and practice “Pentecost listening”—or empathic listening—even if you think something is way off base. Garrido will help Christian leaders discover how to speak directly with colleagues about tensions and about how to know themselves well enough to keep from becoming defensive in the face of negative feedback. She uses saintly examples to illustrate her points, calling upon stories of St. Francis and a Muslim sultan, Leo the Great, Archbishop Óscar Romero, and Our Lady, Undoer of Knots. Garrido also offers sample exercises and tools to work through conflict within an organization and provides self-assessment questions and a prayer at the end of each chapter to help apply it to your personal and professional life. A small group discussion guide and a parish resource guide, which features homily and bulletin aids are available as a free downloads for the book. Redeeming Conflict was a 2017 winner of the Association of Catholic Publishers Excellence in Publishing Award: Resources for Ministry (Second Place) and Honorable Mention in the 2017 Catholic Press Association Book Awards: Professional Books.

The work concludes with Pope Francis’s call to hope and the transformation of the parish into a “People with a Spirited Impulse.”

Book excerpt: ""I realize of course that joy is not expressed the same way at all times in life, especially at moments of great difficulty. Joy adapts and changes, but it always endures, even as a flicker of light born of our personal certainty that, when everything is said and done, we are infinitely loved." Given in Rome by Pope Francis on November 24, 2013, the Solemnity of Christ the King, The Joy of the Gospel (Evangelii Gaudium) encourages all members of the faithful to a renewed personal encounter with Christ and to a greater evangelization. In his first apostolic exhortation, Pope Francis delves more deeply into the new evangelization, building on the foundation laid by Benedict XVI and John Paul II. The document discusses evangelization in the context of both the pulpit and the world. Pope Francis expresses a desire for "a 'missionary option', that is, a missionary impulse capable of transforming everything..."(#27) Referencing Paul VI, John Paul II, Benedict XVI, the Second Vatican Council, and many other Church documents, Pope Francis calls the Church to a greater evangelization that is empowered by a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. Dees presents summaries of each section of the encyclical, in-depth commentary, reflection questions, a glossary of key terms, and suggestions for integrating the encyclical into personal or community spiritual life. Additionally, there are appendices that address Lumen Fidei for pastors, leaders of adult faith formation and RCIA, catechists, teachers, and families.
