Much of this literature has focused on contextual factors that may contribute to the development of ethnic identity, as well as how ethnic identity impacts mental health. The purpose of this study was to better understand ethnic identity across different racial and ethnic groups, which social factors are related to ethnic identity in adolescents, and the relationship between ethnic identity and adolescent depression. In a sample of 186 adolescents, ethnic identity was higher in Hispanic youth than Black, Non-Hispanic or White, Non-Hispanic youth. Greater parental support and feelings of school connectedness were predictive of concurrent ethnic identity; parental conflict was not significantly associated with ethnic identity. Ethnic identity did not significantly predict concurrent depressive symptoms. This study highlights the importance of positive social relationships in the development of adolescent ethnic identity. Future research should incorporate general measures of well-being to better understand the relationship between ethnic identity and mental health during adolescence.

In addition to experiencing stress related to typical adolescent development, immigrant adolescents are exposed to immigration-related and acculturative stress, which can lead to compromised mental health (Takeuchi, Alegria, Jackson, & Williams, 2007). Unfortunately, immigrants as a group tend to underutilize mental health services due to a number of cultural and economic factors (Saechao et al., 2012). Schools offer an ideal setting for services that address immigrant student stress (Gonzalez, Eades, & Supple, 2014). Ethnic identity and school connectedness are two constructs that have been linked to positive psychosocial outcomes for immigrant and minority adolescents. In this study, I investigated the effectiveness of a school-based, short-term group counseling intervention for immigrant adolescents, consisting of five 60 minute sessions, that addressed acculturative stress and ethnic identity development in comparison to a nonintervention control group, based on measures of participants’ school connectedness, ethnic identity, and psychological adjustment (i.e., self-esteem and general distress). Additionally, I explored the role that an immigrant adolescent’s ethnic identity played in predicting psychological adjustment outcomes and in moderating intervention versus control group assignment. In total, 89 immigrant adolescents (44 in the intervention group and 35 in the nontreatment control group) from a variety of ethnic backgrounds at a single public high school in the Northeast participated in the study. One-way ANCOVA results indicated significantly better posttest measurements for both psychological adjustment measures (self-esteem and general distress) in the intervention group as compared to the control group, after adjusting for pretest measurements, however this was not the case for ethnic identity or school connectedness. A hierarchical multiple regression indicated that pretest ethnic identity was a significant predictor of higher posttest general distress, but that it did not significantly moderate the relationship between group assignment and posttest general distress. The results of this study suggest that the group counseling intervention is promising, particularly in terms of improving psychological adjustment above and beyond non-treatment. Further investigation regarding how counselors and educators can address and improve school connectedness is recommended. Ethnic identity appears to have important links to positive psychological adjustment, but it is a complex construct that may require more holistic and culturally-appropriate forms of measurement for immigrant adolescents. I have delineated the goals and strategies of the intervention so that they may inform future practice.

Book excerpt: The United States is experiencing a major shift in the population as more students who are considered ethnic minorities enter the school system. These students are at an increased risk for school failure due to language barriers, challenges with experiencing potential discrimination, and debating their identities across two cultural contexts. Although students who are considered ethnic minorities risk many potential stressors, the literature has shown that ethnic identity is a factor that facilitates positive academic adjustment and engagement among this population. Previous literature has also documented mixed findings regarding the relationship between ethnic identity and school outcomes. The current study explored: (a) the associations between ethnic identity, academic efficacy, and achievement goals among early adolescents, (b) to what extent school belonging moderates the association of ethnic identity with academic efficacy and academic achievement goals, and (c) how associations between ethnic identity and outcomes vary by race (Black, Hispanic, Asian, Other, and White students) and gender. The archival dataset analyzed consisted of data collected from 436 participants in the Adolescent Development Longitudinal Study when they were in the spring of their 6th grade year. Findings revealed significant positive relationships between ethnic identity, academic efficacy, and achievement goals with the exception of performance-avoidance goals. School belonging did not moderate these relationships. Further, group differences (gender, race, and school) in the relationships between ethnic identity, academic efficacy, and achievement goals were not detected among the current sample. Implications for educators and researchers are discussed.

Book excerpt: Racial-ethnic identity is a fundamental aspect of an early adolescent's identity because it includes the attitudes and feelings associated with ethnic and racial group membership. Literature shows racial-ethnic identity to be an important aspect of adolescents' developmental and psychological well-being. This is important in light of the increasingly diverse racial-ethnic demographic for New Zealand, particularly in our large cities. The present study is based around the broad research question 'What influences early adolescent racial-ethnic identity development?' This includes a fundamental question of 'How do early adolescents enact racial-ethnic identity in high school contexts?' and then, 'How does racial-ethnic identity impact on the way early adolescents engage at high school?' This study examines the importance of racial-ethnic identity among young adolescents who attend large, multi-ethnic, urban high schools in New Zealand. The project is comprised of one study with three parts. The analysis in this study focuses on a comparison of Year nine students (13-14 years old) in New Zealand from four racial ethnic groupings: New Zealand European/Pākehā, Māori, Samoan and Chinese. Study 1a and 1b (n = 695) examined the self-identifications, feelings of connectedness, meanings and perceived consequences of adolescents' racial-ethnic identities using a questionnaire. In line with the literature, the findings from these two parts show that racial-ethnic identities are important for adolescents from all four ethnic groups; it frames who they are, where they belong, and what they are trying to achieve. Study 1c used semi-structured interviews to examine the relationship of racial-ethnic identity to educational engagement among high-achieving adolescents from the four ethnic groups (n = 31). Findings here indicated that enacting multiple social identities protected the adolescents from the negative pressures of stereotype threat, but their racial-ethnic identity influenced the ways they enacted their academic and other social identities in the school context; they were constantly, and consciously, contesting contradictory racial-ethnic stereotypes in each context. The research concludes that although racism is prevalent and powerful in the lives of adolescents, a strong racial-ethnic identity may provide adolescents with the capacity to not allow negative pressures to interfere with their educational engagement.

Book excerpt: In this study, I examined relationship among social identity and attitudinal variables and academic achievement in a group of 128 American Indian (AI) high school students. Analyses were first conducted in order to explore whether AI students differed from European American (EA) students on measures of ethnic identity, school identification, perceived barriers, perceived discrimination, and abstract, concrete, and ambivalent educational utility. With the exception of school identification, statistically significant differences and large effect sizes between the AI and EA participants were found on all major variables, with the AI participants reporting higher scores on all measures except GPA. EA participants reported a higher GPA. Additional analyses explored the contribution of ethnic identity towards the variance of AI students' GPA and school identification beyond the contribution from perceived barriers, perceived discrimination, and abstract, concrete, and ambivalent educational utility. Ethnic identity was a significant predictor of school identification. None of the variables, including ethnic identity, was a significant predictor of GPA. Final analysis explored the existence of clusters of AI participants based on ethnic identity and school identification. Two groups of AI students who varied on their level of school identification were identified. These groups did not differ on all major variables. I suggest that many of the statistically in-significant findings are due to the ethnically homogeneous context in which the AI participants come from. I argue that ethnicity-related attitudinal and social identity variables are more important predictors of achievement in contexts in which ethnicity is more salient, and are less important in heterogeneous populations.

Less attention has focused on the role of ethnic identity in youths reactions to environmental factors and perceived life experiences. This study examined the potential protective effect of ethnic identity in the relation between adolescents normative social stressors (family and peer) and a minority stressor (perceived discrimination) and life satisfaction. Data was collected via self-report measures from 417 adolescents (age range 14 to 18, 63.0% girls) at a public high school in the mid-south region of the United States. Moderation analyses were conducted in the PROCESS macro for SPSS to test three types of moderation models: single moderator, multiple moderator, and moderated moderation. Ethnic identity was the moderator in all models. Ethnicity was added as a second moderator in the last two models. Results showed that ethnic identity and ethnicity moderated the relation between peer stress and life satisfaction in one multiple moderator model. Conditional effect analyses revealed that the effect of peer stress on life satisfaction was significant and decreased across low, moderate, and high levels of ethnic identity for African Americans. For European Americans, the effect of peer stress on life satisfaction was significant and decreased at low and moderate levels of ethnic identity only. No significant moderation effects were found in the models with family stress and stress from perceived discrimination as predictors. The findings suggested that the effect of peer stress on life satisfaction differs between African American and European American adolescents, and ethnic identity demonstrates a protective effect in the context of peer stress for both African American and European American adolescents. Implications and future directions are discussed..

Past research has mixed findings with regard to whether ethnic identity development is a protective factor to adolescents engaging in risky behaviors such as, drinking, drug use, smoking, and sexually risky behaviors. Some research has indicated that ethnic identity does serve as a protective factor among some groups of adolescents when drug use is concerned. An additional objective of this study was to better understand the relationship of self-esteem, ethnic identity, and health related decision-making. Gender, age, and ethnic group membership were also looked at as they related to health risk behavior among adolescents in this sample. Four hundred and seventy seven ethnically diverse adolescents between the ages of 13-18 from local Bay area high schools voluntarily participated in this investigation. This study contained a sub-sample of 124 Latino adolescents, and 88 Asian adolescents. Results supported the role that ethnic identity has as a protective factor to health risk behaviors among some groups of adolescents. Ethnic identity and self-esteem were found to be positively correlated in this study. Furthermore, self-esteem was found to be a protective factor to engaging in health risk behaviors among those adolescents who were not Caucasian when compared with Caucasian adolescents. Finally, gender differences were found on the Affirmation and Belonging subscale of the MEIM in terms of health risk behaviors. Findings from this study have implications for designing preventive programs for adolescents from diverse backgrounds. Furthermore, these findings point to the importance of considering ethnic identity, ethnicity, and self-esteem in the prediction of health risk behaviors"--Leaves ii-iii.

Book excerpt: This study focuses on the relationships between ethnic identity, family support, and academic self-concept of adolescents in museum youth programs in the Midwest (N = 88). Three hypotheses were tested and all were supported. There is a correlation between family support and the commitment and exploration of an ethnic identity, commitment to an ethnic identity was associated with a higher academic self-concept, and there is a negative relationship between academic self-concept and self reported grade point average. When the family relationship was studied further, the correlation remained when maternal support was isolated with ethnic identity. A discussion of these findings is presented including limitations and implications for additional research and programming are addressed.

Book excerpt: AbstractIn the last two decades the demographic composition of the United States has witnessed extraordinary changes in the numbers of ethnic minorities, and no where is this more evident than in our nation's public school system. Due to this proliferation of changes in the demographics of our country, serious issues and concerns have been raised with regard to the mental health and academic achievement of school-age children from diverse ethnic backgrounds. The major purpose of the study was to examine the implications of the relationship of psychological well-being variables (life satisfaction, self-esteem and ethnic identity), mental health depression, and Intergroup interactional competence and academic achievement of school- age adolescents. In group assemblies of varying sizes, seven measures were explained to students to fill out either in school or at home and return to be collected. These measures have been previously utilized and have been found to have adequate reliability and validity (Crumly & Hyers, 2004). The reliability of all the measures was also assessed in this study and was found to have moderate to high range. The study utilized a total sample of 119 African American adolescents from low social economic status ranging in grades from ten through twelve. The findings indicated significant intercorrelations among some selected psychological variables and objective and self-reported measures of achievement. Gender differences were noted in the predictability of achievement of reading. The perceived caring, inter-group anxiety, and psychological sense of membership measures were found to be the best predictors of academic achievement. Implications of the study as well as recommendations for future research in this area are discussed.
