Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Students' Text-Book of Botany When, some few years ago, it became necessary to revise the English Edition of the late Prof. Prantl's Lehrbuch der Botanik, it appeared to me that the requirements of English students would be more satisfactorily met if the scope of the work were so extended that, whilst retaining all that has made it of value to beginners, it might be more useful to those engaged in the advanced study of the science. With this object in view, the number of pages has been doubled by additions to all four parts of the book, but more especially to Part III. Dealing with the Classification of Plants. Book An University Text Book of Botany Classic Reprint

Download or read book An University Text Book of Botany Classic Reprint written by Douglas Houghton Campbell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An University Text-Book of Botany Continuous change is necessary in order that the material universe may remain in its present condition. Since the amount of matter is constant, it follows that the particles Of matter must be capable Of dissociation and recombination, otherwise, sooner or later, a stable condition is reached which is incompatible with the existence of life. Living organisms, plants and animals, are the most important agents upon the earth in this redistribution of matter. The inert, inorganic substances are decomposed through the activity of living organisms, the components being united with others into the innumerable com pounds of which living substances are composed. The organic com pounds in turn undergo repeated changes Within the organism, which may itself serve as food for others. The simpler compounds result ing from the chemical changes within the organism may remain inert, like the masses of limestone developed from the skeletons of coral polyps, or the fiinty deposits left by the accumulated Shells of Diatoms; or, like carbon-dioxide, they may again be utilized as food for plants. It is the province of biology, in its broadest sense, to study the part played by plants and animals in the economy of nature - their relation to each other and to the inorganic world. This deals with the life processes of plants, as absorption, transpiration, conduction, photosynthesis, nutrition, assimilation, digestion, respiration, growth, and irritability. Since protoplasm is fundamental to all the life work of the plant, this subject is dealt with first, and the student is led through the study of, and experimentation with, the simpler as well as some of the higher plants, to a general understanding of protoplasm and the special way in which it enables the plant to carry on its work and to adjust itself to the conditions of its existence. This study also serves the purpose of familiarizing the pupil with some of the lower and unfamiliar plants. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Textbook of Botany for Colleges Thus the science of Botany has a scope far too vast, and a body of knowledge much too great, for any one mind to grasp. Therefore it has become subdivided for purposes of exact investigation. From this point of View, all Botany falls into four divisions, and they into subdivisions, as follows. Download or read book A Text Book of Botany Classic Reprint written by EDUARD. STRASBURGER and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Botany IT is customary to place all living beings in either the animal 01 vegetable kingdoms, but in reality a sharp boundary line between animals and plants first becomes possible when they exhibit a complicated structure. In those of more simple organisation all distinctions disappear, and it becomes difficult to define the exact limits of Botany and Zoology. This, in fact, could scarcely be otherwise, as all the processes of life, in both the animal and vegetable kingdoms, are dependent On the same substance, protoplasm. With more complicated organisation, the specific differences increase, and the characteristics distinguishing animal from vegetable life become more obvious. For the present, it must be confessed, the recognition Of an organism, as an animal or a plant, is dependent upon its corre spondence with an abstract idea of what a plant or animal Should be, .based on certain points of agreement between the members of each class. A satisfactory basis for the Separation of all living organisms into the categories of animals or plants can only be obtained when it is shown that all organisms distinguished as animals are in reality genetically connected, and that a similar connection exists between all plants. The proof of this can only be arrived at through the theory OF evolution. From the study of the fossil remains and impressions Of animals and plants, it has been established that in former epochs forms Of life. Differing from those of the present age existed on the earth. It is also generally assumed that all living animals and plants have been derived by gradual modification from previously existing forms. This leads to the further conclusion that those organisms possess ing closely Similar structure, which are united as species in a genus, are in reality related to one another. It is also probable that the union of corresponding genera into one familv and of families into higher groups serves to give expression to a real relationship existing between them. Book Textbook of Botany for Colleges and Universities Vol 1

Download or read book Textbook of Botany for Colleges and Universities Vol 1 written by John Merle Coulter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Textbook of Botany for Colleges and Universities, Vol. 1: Part II, Physiology We recognize that the presentation of the three great subjects here included is very compact, but the book is not intended for reading and recitation. The teacher is expected to use it for suggestive material and for its organization; the student is expected to use it in relating his observations to one another and to the general points of view that the book seeks to develop. There is a continuity of presentation in each part, so that random selection may miss the largest meaning. For example, in the part on morphology, the thread upon which the facts are strung is the evolution of the plant kingdom, and each plant introduced has its peculiar application in illustrating some phase of this evolution. When certain groups are selected for laboratory study, therefore, the intervening text should be read. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
