This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprehensively chronicles the history of the education policymaking in India from 1947 to 2016 with a focus on the developments after 1964 when the Kothari Commission was constituted. The book is informed by the rare insights acquired by the author while making policy at the state, national, and international levels of governance. Another distinguishing feature of this book lies in the attention it pays to the process and politics of policymaking and the larger setting—or, to use jargon, the political and policy environment— in which policies were made at different points of time. The author brings out a crucial analysis of the Indian educational system against the backdrop of national and global political, economic, and educational developments. Two other distinguishing features of the book are the systematic treatment of the regulation of education and the role of judiciary in the making and implementation of education policies.

Book Connecting Histories of Education

Download or read book Connecting Histories of Education written by Barnita Bagchi and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2014-03-01 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of education in the modern world is a history of transnational and cross-cultural influence. This collection explores those influences in (post) colonial and indigenous education across different geographical contexts. The authors emphasize how local actors constructed their own adaptation of colonialism, identity, and autonomy, creating a multi-centric and entangled history of modern education. In both formal as well as informal aspects, they demonstrate that transnational and cross-cultural exchanges in education have been characterized by appropriation, re-contextualization, and hybridization, thereby rejecting traditional notions of colonial education as an export of pre-existing metropolitan educational systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An interdisciplinary and engaging book which looks at the nature of Indian society since Independence and unpacks what post-colonialism means to Indian citizens. Using the case study of the Doon School, a famous boarding school for boys, and one of the leading educational institutions in India, the author argues that to be post-colonial in India is to be modern, rational, secular and urban. In placing post-colonialism in this concrete social context, and analysing how it is constructed, the author renders a complex and often rather abstract subject accessible.

Book excerpt: The Greek Menander said that they whom the Gods love die young, and many have been the inheritors of unfulfilled renown. Perhaps none of them was so unique as Toru Dutt. Frail and delicate since birth, brought up by a doting father, who lavished every care and attention on her, born in a Hindu family but converted early to Christianity, fed on Hindu myths and legends acquired both through books and through oral tradition, educated in Europe and longing to return to England, attracted towards the end of her life by Sanskrit and devoting weary hours to its grammatical intricacies, writing in French and English but not in her mother tongue, publishing works in both these languages, leaving behind with those who knew her the fragrant memory of an exceedingly charming personality, dying before she was twenty two, Toru Dutt is one of the most poignant examples of those who before their proper time pass through the door of darkness.

Book Intellectual Curiosity and the Scientific Revolution

Download or read book Intellectual Curiosity and the Scientific Revolution written by Toby E. Huff and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-10-11 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventeenth-century Europe witnessed an extraordinary flowering of discoveries and innovations. This study, beginning with the Dutch-invented telescope of 1608, casts Galileo's discoveries into a global framework. Although the telescope was soon transmitted to China, Mughal India, and the Ottoman Empire, those civilizations did not respond as Europeans did to the new instrument. In Europe, there was an extraordinary burst of innovations in microscopy, human anatomy, optics, pneumatics, electrical studies, and the science of mechanics. Nearly all of those aided the emergence of Newton's revolutionary grand synthesis, which unified terrestrial and celestial physics under the law of universal gravitation. That achievement had immense implications for all aspects of modern science, technology, and economic development. The economic implications are set out in the concluding epilogue. All these unique developments suggest why the West experienced a singular scientific and economic ascendancy of at least four centuries.

Book History of Indigenous Pharmaceutical Companies in Colonial Calcutta 1855 1947

Download or read book History of Indigenous Pharmaceutical Companies in Colonial Calcutta 1855 1947 written by Malika Basu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-01-29 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the context of life and civilization, the pharmaceutical industry is as old as human existence. Since time immemorial India had its own enriched indigenous tradition of medicine. The development of alchemy and its application for human welfare was also an important step in Indian scientific tradition. The present monograph is an innovative attempt to understand the history of the indigenous pharmaceutical companies in Calcutta during the colonial times. Here pharmaceutical companies have been viewed as an illuminating lens to understand the interconnectedness between Indian traditions of thought and Western science and subsequent development of pharmaceutical industry in colonial India. The entire gamut of discussion centres around the issues of medical education, medical services, public health, pharmaceutical profession and politico-economic contexts of the development of pharmaceutical industry in colonial India. Three indigenous pharmaceuticals namely – Butto Krishna Paul & Co., Bengal Chemical & Pharmaceutical Works Limited, and East India Pharmaceutical Works Limited have been studied. The study not only portrays the politico-economic background to the emergence of the pharmaceutical industry in colonial India but links it to the economic nationalism and the quest for self-sufficiency among Indian nationalists and entrepreneurs. The pharmaceutical industry in India can be symbolic of a cultural response to modern science which was to pave the subsequent trajectory of national scientific endeavours in India. Book India that is Bharat

Download or read book India that is Bharat written by J Sai Deepak and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-08-15 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India, That Is Bharat, the first book of a comprehensive trilogy, explores the influence of European 'colonial consciousness' (or 'coloniality'), in particular its religious and racial roots, on Bharat as the successor state to the Indic civilisation and the origins of the Indian Constitution. It lays the foundation for its sequels by covering the period between the Age of Discovery, marked by Christopher Columbus' expedition in 1492, and the reshaping of Bharat through a British-made constitution-the Government of India Act of 1919. This includes international developments leading to the founding of the League of Nations by Western powers that tangibly impacted this journey. Further, this work also traces the origins of seemingly universal constructs such as 'toleration', 'secularism' and 'humanism' to Christian political theology. Their subsequent role in subverting the indigenous Indic consciousness through a secularised and universalised Reformation, that is, constitutionalism, is examined. It also puts forth the concept of Middle Eastern coloniality, which preceded its European variant and allies with it in the context of Bharat to advance their shared antipathy towards the Indic worldview. In order to liberate Bharat's distinctive indigeneity, 'decoloniality' is presented as a civilisational imperative in the spheres of nature, religion, culture, history, education, language and, crucially, in the realm of constitutionalism.
