Acute and Chronic Disease. Bv Acute is not meant a dis ease in which the symptoms intensify, but a disease of short duration, while Chronic disease is one which has lasted for a long time, and there may or may not be an acute symp tom, but acute has rather to do with duration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Lecture, Introductory to the Course on the Theory and Practice of Medicine, in the University of New York: Session 1847-8 IN appearing before you, gentlemen, on the present occasion, I can not but feel an Oppressive degree Of anxious solicitude. From my earliest days a student of medicine, I have for nearly a quarter of a century been engaged as a zealous votary and teacher of that science and my yearly increasing experience of its varied functions, has served to impress upon me, more and more deeply, the difficulty of attaining a knowledge of its elements, and of imparting that know ledge to others. I have learned, too, to appreciate more accurately and profoundly, the burdensome responsibilities of the office I have so long filled; responsibilities Of the gravest import at all times - the keen sense of which is unavoidably heightened by my removal hither, into a wider and loftier sphere of action than that in which my younger life has been past. Be considered as relating to the practice. This distinction 19 made, however, rather 1n reference to the title of the professorship I hold, and to the duties belonging to it, than to the exact character of the two parts of the work. The second palt is represented as relating to practice, because it will describe particular diseases, and the treatment adapted to each; yet it will admit and require many theoretical discussions. You have come prepared to receive medical instruction. - Will you receive it from us i - Shall we have the honour and pleasure of becoming your teachers - Another question of more importance - What inducements can we, ought we, to offer you? There are other teachers - those not only in the other schools of Philadelphia, and of Baltimore, and New York; but those also in the schools of the farther north and south; and of the far West, - all with knowledge and capabilities - impelled by a zeal which shall secure pros perity - secure the advancement of American medicine - secure American co operation with the efforts of Europe to act better and better, more and more, the part of the good Samaritan, towards a diseased and suffering world. We are not unmindful of these considerations, nor of our relative responsibilities, and therefore we ask ourselves with the deepest solicitude, What inducements can the Faculty of the Medical Department of Pennsylvania College offer you? -what is the ground of confidence in ourselves -can we promise you no disappointment - none to your medical preceptor - your parent or guardian and above all, no disappointment to our suffering fellow-creatures. If, then, gentlemen, it shall be, that we are to become associated as pupils and teachers - to become, to each other, the givers and recipients of medical knowledge, until you receive the seal and parchments of this Institution, and become physicians, - physicians who will take honourable and useful posts in various sections of our country; or become the soldier's or the sailor's comfort; or a pioneer in heathen lands to battle with unchecked and aggravated disease. Or, indeed, quitting the duties of a physician, to apply your knowledge of or. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clinical Lectures on the Principles and Practice of Medicine IN consequence of the rapid exhaustion of a second edition of this work, I have been called upon to prepare a new one much sooner than I could have anticipated. The whole of it, not withstanding, has been most carefully revised, and the volume extended by the addition of fifty pages, with twenty-one new cases and thirty-four new wood-cuts. I have endeavoured throughout, by reference to indisputable facts, to demonstrate the correctness_ of the principles which have guided my prac tice, and have, i therefore, authenticated every case with the name of its reporter in the hospital books. I have availed myself of numerous illustrations engraved on wood, having long been persuaded that mere description 'of morbid appearances, and especially of those that are made visible by means of the microscope, communicates only feeble or imper feet ideas to others. Of these illustrations, such as are borrowed have the names of their authors appended; such as have no name attached are original. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full-scale biography of Nathan Smith -- medical pioneer, founder of Dartmouth Medical School and cofounder of three other medical schools (Yale, Vermont, and Bowdoin), and progenitor of a long line of physicians. Smith was a central figure in early American medical education, from 1787 when he began practicing in New Hampshire, to his death in New Haven in 1829. In his day, Smith was probably the nation's leading physician, surgeon, and medical educator, and well ahead of his time in insisting that doctors practice "watchful waiting" and emphasizing patient-centered care. In the process of telling Smith's life and story, authors Hayward and Putnam fill out in new ways the picture of medical treatment and medical education in post-Colonial America. The tale of Smith's remarkable career unfolds in New England, where the authors create a sense of time and place through an exhaustive study of primary and secondary sources, and especially Smith's own letters and lecture notes taken by his students. Readers become immersed in Smith's life and the spirit of the times as they examine early Victorian notions of disease, how medical students were taught (the chapter on body snatching is especially lively), the politics and economics of founding professional medical schools in early America, and other topics. The book provides a vivid description of what it was like to study and practice medicine, and be the recipient of the ministrations of physicians, during this critical period.

Download or read book Science and Ethics in American Medicine 1800 1914 written by Harris Livermore Coulter and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 1982 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Divided Legacy (Vols. I-IV) is a history of Western medical philosophy from the time of Hippocrates to the twentieth century, treating it as a unified system of thought rather than a series of fortuitous discovers. Dr. Coulter interprets the development of medical ideas as the product of a conflict between two opposed systems of thought, Empiricism and Rationalism. This third volume of Divided Legacy continues the account of the conflict between the Empirical and the Rationalist approaches to therapeutics but introduces a socio-economic dimension which had earlier been lacking. In the early nineteenth century, Samuel Hahnemann’s formulation of the Empirical therapeutic doctrine, which he called homeopathy. It flourished especially in the United States. This volume traces the history of the rise and decline of this formulation of Empirical therapeutics in the nineteenth century United States. It analyzes the interaction between the homeopathic doctrines and those of the orthodox school and attempts to illustrate the influence of socio-economic constraints on the movement of medical thought during this period.
