Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Third Symposium on Numerical and Physical Aspects of Aerodynamic Flows, like its immediate predecessor, was organized with emphasis on the calculation of flows relevant to aircraft, ships, and missiles. Fifty-five papers and 20 brief communications were presented at the Symposium, which was held at the California State University at Long Beach from 21 to 24 January 1985. A panel discussion was chaired by A. M. O. Smith and includeq state ments by T. T. Huang, C. E. lobe, l. Nielsen, and C. K. Forester on priorities for future research. The first lecture in memory of Professor Keith Stewartson was delivered by J. T. Stuart and is reproduced in this volume together with a selection of the papers presented at the Symposium. In Volume II of this series, papers were selected so as to provide a clear indication of the range of procedures available to represent two-dimensional flows, their physical foundation, and their predictive ability. In this volume, the emphasis is on three-dimensional flows with a section of five papers concerned with unsteady flows and a section of seven papers on three dimensional flows: The papers deal mainly with calculation methods and encompass subsonic and transonic, attached and separated flows. The selec tion has been made so as to fulfill the same purpose for three-dimensional flows as did Volume II for two-dimensional flows.

Book Calculation of Trailing edge Stern and Wake Flows by a Time marching Solution of the Partially parabolic Equations

Download or read book Calculation of Trailing edge Stern and Wake Flows by a Time marching Solution of the Partially parabolic Equations written by H. C. Chen and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes in detail a computational method for the solution of the partially-parabolic (or semi-elliptic or parabolized) Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations for the calculation of external flow around ship-like three-dimensional bodies. Among the main features of the method are the following. Numerically-generated body-fitted coordinates are used to facilitate applications to a wide variety of shapes. The convective-transport equations are discretized using the finite-analytic scheme which employs analytic solutions of the locally-linearized equations. A time-marching algorithm is employed to enable future extensions to be made to handle unsteady and fully elliptic problems. A two-step global pressure-correction algorithm has been developed to accelerate convergence. The method can be used with large solution domains in order to capture the viscous-inviscid interaction so that iterative matching between separate viscous-flow and potential-flow solutions is not necessary. For turbulent flows, the well known k-epsilon model is used, but with a more convenient and realistic treatment of the flow close to solid walls. The generality and flexibility of the method are demonstrated by applications to several two-dimensional, axisymmetric and three-dimensional flows. Keywords include: Thick 3D boundary layer; Stern Flow; Wake; Partially-parabolic equations; Turbulence models; Body-fitted coordinates; Computational fluid dynamics.

Book Computation of Laminar and Turbulent Flow in Curved Ducts Channels and Pipes Using the Navier Stokes Equations

Download or read book Computation of Laminar and Turbulent Flow in Curved Ducts Channels and Pipes Using the Navier Stokes Equations written by R. C. Buggeln and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both laminar and turbulent flows in strongly curved ducts, channels, and pipes are studied by numerical methods. The study concentrates on the curved square-duct geometry and flow conditions for which detailed measurements have been obtained recently by Taylor, Whitelaw, and Yianneskis. The solution methodology encompasses solution of the compressible ensemble-averaged Navier-Stokes equations at low Mach number using a split linearized block implicit (LBI) scheme, and rapid convergence on the order of 80 noniterative time steps is obtained. The treatment of turbulent flows includes resolution of the viscous sublayer region. A series of solutions for both laminar and turbulent flow and for both two- and three-dimensional geometries of the same curvature are presented. The accuracy of these solutions is explored by mesh refinement and by comparison with experiment. In summary, good qualitative and reasonable quantitative agreement between solution and experiment is obtained. Collectively, this sequence of results serves to clarify the physical structure of these flows and hence how grid selection procedures might be adjusted to improve the numerical accuracy and experimental agreement. For a three-dimensional flow of considerable complexity, the relatively good agreement with experiment obtained for the turbulent flow case despite a coarse grid must be regarded as encouraging.
