Book Accelerated Plant Breeding Volume 3

Download or read book Accelerated Plant Breeding Volume 3 written by Satbir Singh Gosal and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-09 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant improvement has shifted its focus from yield, quality and disease resistance to factors that will enhance commercial export, such as early maturity, shelf life and better processing quality. Conventional plant breeding methods aiming at the improvement of a self-pollinating crop, such as wheat, usually take 10-12 years to develop and release of the new variety. During the past 10 years, significant advances have been made and accelerated methods have been developed for precision breeding and early release of crop varieties. This work summarizes concepts dealing with germplasm enhancement and development of improved varieties based on innovative methodologies that include doubled haploidy, marker assisted selection, marker assisted background selection, genetic mapping, genomic selection, high-throughput genotyping, high-throughput phenotyping, mutation breeding, reverse breeding, transgenic breeding, shuttle breeding, speed breeding, low cost high-throughput field phenotyping, etc. It is an important reference with special focus on accelerated development of improved crop varieties.

Book Objective Genetics Biotechnology Biochemistry and Forestry

Download or read book Objective Genetics Biotechnology Biochemistry and Forestry written by Vijay K. Khanna and published by I. K. International Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2013-12-30 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book has been designed to serve the students of Plant Breeding, Genetics, Biotechnology, Biochemistry and Forestry. In most of the books, the objective type questions judge the students on the basis of their ability to memorize, because of the way they are formulated. It is important to be able to remember the year of historical events, the scientists involved and who named what to make one remember the landmark contributions of the people on a particular subject. Along with these kinds of questions, majority of the questions in this book have been designed to assess the candidate s understanding of the subject. It is perhaps for the first time where questions have four to six choice statements, which are to be understood to find the right answer. One has to think and remember what he has learnt to be able to answer these questions. There are some books on objective type questions on the subject of Plant Breeding and a very few on Genetics but there is hardly any book, which deals with Tissue Culture, Biotechnology, Biochemistry or Forestry. All these subjects are related as many postgraduate students of Genetics and Plant Breeding take Biotechnology as a minor subject whereas those of Biotechnology take Biochemistry or Genetics and Plant Breeding as a minor subject. Also, undergraduates in agricultural universities study courses on all these subjects including Forestry

Book Expanding the Production and Use of Cool Season Food Legumes

Download or read book Expanding the Production and Use of Cool Season Food Legumes written by Fred J. Muehlbauer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1004 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of the Second International Food Legume Research Conference held in Cairo, Egypt was to build on the success of the first conference held nearly 6 years earlier at Spokane, Washington, USA. It was at that first conference where the decision was made to hold the second Conference in Egypt and so near the ancestral home of these food legume crops. It has been a long held view that the cool season food legumes had their origin in the Mediterranean basin and the Near-east arc, and there is little doubt that food legumes were a staple food of the ancient Egyptian civilization. The cool season food legumes have the reputation for producing at least some yield under adverse conditions of poor fertility and limited moisture, i. e. , in circumstances where other crops are likely to fail completely. Yields of cool season food legumes are particularly poor in those regions where they are most important to local populations. The influx of more profitable crops such as wheat, maize, and soybeans have gradually relegated the food legumes to marginal areas with poor fertility and limited water which exposes them to even greater degrees of stress. In the past two decades, production of food legumes has declined in most of the developing countries while at the same time it has expanded greatly in Canada, Australia, and most notably in Turkey.

Book The Chickpea Genome

  • Author : Rajeev K. Varshney
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2018-01-02
  • ISBN : 3319661175

Download or read book The Chickpea Genome written by Rajeev K. Varshney and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sheds new light on the chickpea genome sequencing and resequencing of chickpea germplasm lines and provides insights into classical genetics, cytogenetics, and trait mapping. It also offers an overview of the latest advances in genome sequencing and analysis. The growing human population, rapid climate changes and limited amounts of arable land are creating substantial challenges in connection with the availability and affordability of nutritious food for smallholder farmers in developing countries. In this context, climate smart crops are essential to alleviating the hunger of the millions of poor and undernourished people living in developing countries. In addition to cereals, grain legumes are an integral part of the human diet and provide sustainable income for smallholder farmers in the arid and semi-arid regions of the world. Among grain legumes, the chickpea (Cicer arietinum) is the second most important in terms of production and productivity. Besides being a rich source of proteins, it can fix atmospheric nitrogen through symbiosis with rhizobia and increase the input of combined nitrogen. Several abiotic stresses like drought, heat, salinity, together with biotic stresses like Fusarium wilt, Ascochyta blight, and Botrytis grey mould have led to production losses, as the chickpeas is typically grown in the harsh climates of our planet’s semi-arid regions.

Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: The development of genetically-modified foods has given rise to much widespread and heated debate on the possible consequences - both positive and negative - of this new technology. This book not only addresses the broad issues involved (outlining the connections between gene patenting and biotechnology and their impact on international relations), but also, for the first time, examines the social movement emerging against GM food. Anti-GenetiX traces this movement from its emergence and shows how and why it expanded from a small expert concern to the current huge political uproar. It explores the contribution this movement makes to shaping global civil society and argues that such global social movements will become increasingly common in the global age.
