Book A Strategies Handbook for Teaching Reading Comprehension Skills to Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Download or read book A Strategies Handbook for Teaching Reading Comprehension Skills to Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder written by Lindsay Erinne Pian and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have much stronger decoding skills than reading comprehension skills. Thus, appropriate and effective reading comprehension instruction is critical for this population. Many evidence-based practices are available regarding reading comprehension strategies for typically developing students. However, a review of the literature on reading comprehension strategies and assessments for students with ASD reveals that research in these areas is limited; few evidence-based practices have been identified specifically for this population. Major themes that arose in the literature review included reading abilities of students with ASD, social communication and oral language, reading comprehension assessment structures, types of reading comprehension impairments, and best practices in teaching and assessing reading comprehension. The purpose of this project was to design a reading comprehension strategy and visual resource handbook to be used by special educators, other interventionists, and general education teachers who teach literacy skills to elementary students with ASD. The handbook includes practical, literature-based recommendations for teaching specific skills to students with ASD and reading comprehension impairments. Each of the handbook's six chapters focuses upon one overarching strategy that strong readers use to comprehend text; namely, Making Connections, Asking Questions, Visualizing, Drawing Inferences, Determining Importance of Information, and Synthesizing Information.

Book Drawing a Blank

Download or read book Drawing a Blank written by Emily Doyle Iland and published by AAPC Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students with autism should not have struggle with reading comprehension! Many individuals with autism spectrum disorder may be fluent word callers; indeed, many have advanced ability to recognize words. However, many people with autism spectrum disorder need support when it comes to reading comprehension. Comprehension difficulties in readers with ASD can be subtle and difficult to tease out. As a result, their substantial level of risk for reading comprehension problems is often overlooked or unaddressed, and many students struggle in silence. This is where Drawing a Blank: Improving Comprehension for Readers on the Autism Spectrum is helpful. This practical and well-researched resource provides educational professionals and parents with the tools needed to improve comprehension for good decoders who have reading comprehension difficulties, as well as readers who struggle with both decoding and comprehension. In keeping with current standards, the book emphasizes the importance of using evidence-based and promising practices, based on thorough assessment of students with autism spectrum. This resource helps those with autism spectrum disorder learn how they can become better and more effective readers. Foreword by Brenda Smith Myles, PhD.

Book Reading Comprehension Interventions and Instructional Strategies

Download or read book Reading Comprehension Interventions and Instructional Strategies written by Jennifer Badino and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of individuals with High Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder (HFASD) have established that a selective pattern of academic and cognitive abilities and deficits characterize this disorder. These deficits frequently make reading comprehension more difficult for these students. Research has primarily focused on decoding skills and Autism Spectrum Disorder as a whole. Teachers of students with HFASD are not consistently provided with instructional materials to assist teachers of this specific population in meeting the needs of their students. The project undertaken by the author, Reading Comprehension Interventions and Instructional Strategies for Students Living with High Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder Manual, consisted of designing and developing a reading comprehension manual which describes and utilizes interventions and instructional strategies specific to students with HFASD. The project was designed to provide instructors with effective interventions and instructional strategies in reading n a manual format. The question of whether this approach, impacts the reading comprehension skills of students living with HFASD in a positive manner was answered in the affirmative. The comparison the author made between student IEP baseline scores and posttest performance after the use of the manual demonstrated the positive correlation between the quality of intervention and instructional strategies and student success in reading comprehension. Providing additional instructional supports for students living with HFASD is essential for reading comprehension growth.

Book Reading Comprehension Strategies for Students with ASD

Download or read book Reading Comprehension Strategies for Students with ASD written by William Kunstmann and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have a variety of special needs. Typically, these needs include difficulty with social skills, a need for structure, and fixed interests. High functioning children with ASD may have average or even above average cognitive ability. One way this manifests itself is with a relative strength in decoding skills. However, these children typically have difficulty with reading comprehension. A difficulty for general education teachers, school support staff, and other school personnel that work with these children is they typically do not have the experience, training, and resources to assist the children with reading comprehension needs. This thesis research project was conducted to collect effective strategies that teachers and others could utilize when working on the reading comprehension needs of children with ASD. A comprehensive search of the literature of the history of ASD, children strengths and needs, and strategies that could be used with the children to assist them in their reading comprehension was conducted. The literature review supported the theory that children with ASD do typically exhibit a need in reading comprehension. The project consisted of two resources, a teacher's resource guide and a PowerPoint presentation. The teacher's resource guide presents strategies to help children with ASD develop their reading comprehension. The PowerPoint presentation was designed to provide teachers an overview of the issues, needs, and strategies for these children. Potential benefits of the project was that it included evidence-based strategies, it addressed a relevant need for these children, and the information was presented in a user-friendly format. Two limitations noted were the variations of the manifestation of ASD in children and how some of the strategies may not work for every child. Also of note was that although research in children with ASD has increased, there are still areas concerning reading comprehension that would benefit from further research. Recommendations were made for more research in reading comprehension for children with ASD and more research in social skills.

This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a must-have resource for all special educators and general educators who work with students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The strategies and teaching techniques discussed here are those that have shown great promise in helping students with ASD to succeed. The underlying premise is that students with ASD should be explicitly taught a full range of social, self-help, language, reading, writing and math skills, as are their typically developing classmates. Each chapter provides teachers with practical information about how to approach the tasks of determining what to teach and how to teach, with clearly defined steps for implementation. The approaches described here are based on the view that the classroom must be structured as an environment that reflects high expectations and provides sufficient support from teaching staff and peers. This invaluable volume offers teachers state-of-the-art knowledge on how to help students with ASD succeed.

Book Evidence based Reading Instruction

Download or read book Evidence based Reading Instruction written by International Reading Association and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Reading First legislation, part of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, labels these topics the "five essential components" of reading instruction, and programs funded by Reading First must include these elements. Each state will receive funds that are proportional to the number and percentage of children living in poverty and then host competitions to determine how the funds will be distributed among the districts and schools. In order to aid educators in implementing these components in the early grades, the International Reading Association has assembled Evidence-Based Reading Instruction: Putting the National Reading Panel Report Into Practice, a timely and helpful compilation of articles from its journal The Reading Teacher. The first five sections are grouped according to the five essential components. Each section offers a summary and discussion of the NRP findings, and presents several articles from The Reading Teacher that provide concrete descriptions of the recommended practices. The final section includes articles that employ practices from two or more of the essential components, and the appendixes contain the Association's position statement What Is Evidence-Based Reading Instruction? and a useful list of Association resources cited in the NRP Report. This compilation will help educators implement practices consistent with scientifically based reading research, but more important, it will help teachers make every child a reader.

Book Understanding and Teaching Reading Comprehension

Download or read book Understanding and Teaching Reading Comprehension written by Jane Oakhill and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-21 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ultimate aim of reading is not the process but to understand what we read and comprehension can take place at many different levels. There has been an increasing emphasis on the importance of reading comprehension in recent years but despite this there is very little written on this vital topic accessible to trainee and practicing teachers. The Handbook of Reading Comprehension presents an overview of recent findings on reading comprehension and comprehension problems in children. It provides a detailed examination of the characteristics of children who have reading comprehension difficulties, and examines ways in which comprehension can be supported and improved. It is accessibly written for students and professionals with no previous background in the psychology of reading or reading problems. This indispensable handbook asks the question ‘what is comprehension?’ The authors consider comprehension of different units of language: understanding single words, sentences, and connected prose and outline what readers (and listeners) have to do to successfully understand an extended text. This book also considers comprehension for different purposes, in particular reading for pleasure and reading to learn and explores how reader characteristics such as interest and motivation can influence the comprehension process. Different skills contribute to successful reading comprehension. These include word reading ability, vocabulary knowledge, syntactic skills, memory, and discourse level skills such as the ability to make inferences, knowledge about text structure, and metacognitive skills. The authors discuss how each one contributes to the development of reading comprehension skill and how the development of these skills (or their precursors) in pre-readers, provides the foundation for reading comprehension development. Areas covered include:- Word reading and comprehension Development of comprehension skills Comprehension difficulties Assessment Teaching for improvement Throughout the text successful experimental and classroom based interventions will be highlighted, practical tips for teachers and summary boxes detailing key points and explaining technical terms will be included in each chapter

Book Communication in Autism

Download or read book Communication in Autism written by Joanne Arciuli and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014-10-15 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communication in Autism adopts a multidisciplinary approach to explore one of the most common developmental disorders associated with communication impairment. Perhaps the most fascinating thing about communication in autism is that variation is as extreme as it could possibly be. While some individuals with autism have age-appropriate language, a number have exceptional language skills; others have little or no spoken language. In between these extremes are individuals who experience significant linguistic impairments. These impairments can affect peer relations and literacy skills. The chapters in this volume provide comprehensive coverage of both the theoretical underpinnings and the practical aspects of autistic communication. The result is a volume that showcases the wide range of methodologies being used in this field of research. It is invaluable for scientists, service providers, parents, individuals with autism, and students learning about communication and autism (e.g., in psychology, speech pathology, and education).
