Book A Strange Chat at the Fruit Stand

Download or read book A Strange Chat at the Fruit Stand written by Lesha Greenlea and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexis's day began with the sun shining bright, a gentle warm breeze blowing on her face as she glanced out the window. It was the making of a beautiful day. Little did she know it would be the start of a new way of life for her. It all began with an unscheduled trip to the local produce stand. She had not planned the trip to the produce stand. It was just the excitement and good feeling of this beautiful day that led her to this place on this day. Or was it? God has a way of prompting and leading us to his plan. Oftentimes, we believe it's just a coincidence that events occur in our lives, but maybe it is designed that way so that God can get our attention, so that he can pour into us what we need at that time. Could it have been that God designed this beautiful day to prompt her to go to the place of her blessing? In our lives, we must see God's hand at work in every part of our journey. In our home, our church, our job, and even at our local produce stand, we have to be aware that God is always watching. And you never know, this could be the day that Christ wants to have a little chat with you.

Book Does Preaching Have a Future

Download or read book Does Preaching Have a Future written by Dr. Dwight S. Riddick Sr. and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2015-08-07 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From preaching sermons as a child in the backyard, to delivering the upcoming Presidents address for the 101st annual gathering of the prestigious Hampton University Ministers Conference, Dr. Dwight Riddick has become transparent in his book, Does Preaching Have a Future? As you open the pages of this book, you will find insightful, conversational thoughts around the future of preaching. He writes, This book is intended to ignite conversation about what preaching should look like going forward-if this discourse is not already burning in the soul. This veteran (seasoned) pastor and teacher of the gospel has relied completely upon Scripture in his broad range of topics when it comes to the future of preaching: *Preach the word, be instant in season, out of season is a tried and proven counsel for preachers stretching all generations. *Ezekiel was faced with the question, can these bones live? Preachers today are asked if their preaching can bring about positive transformation in the lives of hopeless people and hopeless cases during changing times. Dr. Riddick supports this conversational topic by reminding his fellow homileticians (preachers) that those called and anointed by God are uniquely qualified to explain the Scripture.

Book excerpt: Shamus Award–winning author Michael Sears brings Queens, New York, to literary life in this crime series debut featuring a somewhat seedy lawyer with a heart of gold (or at least gold plate). Queens, New York—the most diverse place on earth. Native son Ted Molloy knows these streets like the back of his hand. Ted was once a high-powered Manhattan lawyer, but after a spectacular fall from grace, he has found himself back on his home turf, scraping by as a foreclosure profiteer. It’s a grubby business, but a safe one—until Ted’s case sourcer, a mostly reformed small-time conman named Richie Rubiano, turns up murdered shortly after tipping Ted off to an improbably lucrative lead. With Richie’s widow on his back and shadows of the past popping up at every turn, Ted realizes he’s gotten himself embroiled in a murder investigation. His quest for the truth will take him all over Queens, plunging him into the machinations of greedy developers, mobsters, enraged activists, old litigator foes and old-school New York City operators.

Download or read book Banana Girl written by Jada Tan Rufo and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2015-06-23 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s not easy being an Asian American in China, where residents of big cities believe that Asians, including those born and raised in English-speaking countries, are not qualified to teach English. In a country of 1.3 billion people where studying English is as popular as having the latest electronic gadget, this can be a huge problem. Author Jada Tan Rufo, descended from a Chinese immigrant who took a Filipino name when he came to the United States, takes up the challenge to teach in the country of her ancestors. Her detailed memoir Banana Girl takes readers on a journey throughout China, describing the lows—such as working for a corrupt and inept boss— to the highs, the time she spends with her eager young students and the chance to travel inside the beautiful country. The vast nation incorporates 55 recognized minorities in addition to the Han majority, each with its own language and identity. During her free time, Jada explores China’s wonders, walking along the Great Wall, visiting the Olympic Stadium in Beijing and riding camels in Inner Mongolia. It is her work with her students, however, that will define Jada’s experience. Although she may be a cultural banana, falling into the Asian American way of thinking of herself as looking yellow on the outside and white on the inside, Jada leaves an indelible impression on the students and fellow teachers whose lives intersected with hers. In Banana Girl, she freely shares the frustration, joy and laughter experienced during her time in China.

Book excerpt: ". . . sheer subversive bravado . . ." - The New York Times Here are six enthusiastically received history plays by Charles Mee: The Life of George Washington, Full Circle, The War to End War, Vienna: Lusthaus, Gone, and Requiem for the Dead. "The War to End War . . . is engrossing as it spins its arguments, brilliant even in its detours and diversions. . . . When the lights came back up, it was clear Mee had blown the collective mind of the audience. By sheer force of intellect and provocation, he had violated nearly all rules of theater-making and playwriting, in an evening that was never boring. . . . If there were more smart theater like this, more smart people would go to see theater." - theater2k.com "The titillating eeriness of impending doom is exploited so gorgeously in Vienna: Lusthaus that you can understand how civilizations become complicit in their own demise. A . . . seamless amalgam of dance, music and drama is set before World War I in Vienna, where Freud and Hitler overlapped, which it presents in a delicately surreal fashion as a hothouse of sensuality and incipient Nazism." - The New York Times "Through the ages, the tale of the judgment of the chalk circle has been told many times by many authors, but never, ever, not once in a blue moon, has it been told with the abundant imagination and affirmation of [Charles Mee's Full Circle] at Steppenwolf Theatre. . . . This is, as its final stage picture so beautifully shows, a play of hope, one that believes some good may someday come from our turbulent times. Rarely has that hope been expressed with such passion, such strength, such joy." - Chicago Tribune

Book The Death and Life of Great American Cities

Download or read book The Death and Life of Great American Cities written by Jane Jacobs and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2016-07-20 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty years after its publication, The Death and Life of Great American Cities was described by The New York Times as "perhaps the most influential single work in the history of town planning....[It] can also be seen in a much larger context. It is first of all a work of literature; the descriptions of street life as a kind of ballet and the bitingly satiric account of traditional planning theory can still be read for pleasure even by those who long ago absorbed and appropriated the book's arguments." Jane Jacobs, an editor and writer on architecture in New York City in the early sixties, argued that urban diversity and vitality were being destroyed by powerful architects and city planners. Rigorous, sane, and delightfully epigrammatic, Jacobs's small masterpiece is a blueprint for the humanistic management of cities. It is sensible, knowledgeable, readable, indispensable. The author has written a new foreword for this Modern Library edition.
