Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War Rhymes The reader of this booklet is not expected to agree with everything in it. The rhymes express only the impressions made on the writer at the time by the varied incidents and conditions arising out of the great war, and some of them did not apply when circum stances changed. They have been printed as written, how ever, and, if they serve no other purpose, may at least help us to recall some things that too soon have nearly passed out of our minds. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War Rhymes and Peace Poems I am the unvanquished king, and the proof Of my prowess is the history Of mankind, even from the beginning. My yoke is the yoke of hardship. My guerdon is the power of pride. My victory is the victory Of the vultures. I defy humanity, progress, law, religion and love; yet my hand holds the hearts of men in a grip invincible. The motherhood of man is made as nothing, for the best be loved are my surest prey. The lust for daring deeds and glowing visions of glory are the food I feed them from the day of their birth. They answer my call with shouting and singing. Their ears are deaf to the moans of mother love, and their hearts are filled with the venom Of hate. A nation is born, it groweth up and. Its strength multiplies. Its granaries overflow with the fruits Of the field, its treasuries groan with riches; but to what avail? In a single night all is laid low when I command, and the Demon of Desolation dwells in the House of Happiness. I am the Preventer Of Progress, the Curse Of Contentment, the Nemesis of the Nations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Children's Story of the War, Vol. 10: The Last Phase Victory! The fourth anniversary of our entrance into the Great War fell upon a Sunday, and in every church in the land a service of Remembrance was held. It was a day of prayer, of confession, of thanksgiving and resolve. The Allied victory on the Marne seemed to have come as a special benefaction for the occasion, and in every sermon that was preached the note of thanksgiving was uppermost. Men everywhere regarded that victory as the turn of the tide; but all knew that the war had not yet been won, and that the nation would have to make many sacrifices and suffer many sorrows before it could rejoice in complete victory. Download or read book The Children s Story of the War Vol 2 written by Edward Parrott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-12 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Children's Story of the War, Vol. 2: From the Battle of Mons to the Fall of Antwerp When the young soldier arrives at the barracks he is given three suits of clothes, one of which is his drill dress, another his walking-out dress, and the third his war dress. These clothes he keeps on a shelf above his bed, and he so arranges his garments that the French colours, blue, white, and red, are clearly seen. In summer he rises at 4 a.m., and in winter at 6 a.m., and he goes to bed at 9 p.m. All the year round, except when he is on sentry-go, or has permission to stay out late. Every day the barrack-room is inspected, to see that the beds are properly made, that the men's clothes are in good order, and that the room is clean and tidy. The little breakfast, which consists of coffee and a roll, is served at 5 a.m.; lunch is eaten at ten o'clock, and dinner at five. The meals usually consist of soup, meat, vegetables, and fruit. On great occa sions wine is supplied, and cigars are handed round. The conscript's pay consists of one sou (a halfpenny) a day, and his tobacco. Some of the men receive money from their parents and friends others have to make shift on the tri ing allowance which the Government gives them. The men who begin their service in a particular year are known as the class of that year. Thus the men who joined the colours in 1914 belong to the class of 1914. Frenchmen fix all their dates by reference to la classe. When two Frenchmen meet almost the first question they put to each other is, Of what class are you P When two or three men who have served their time in the same regiment come together they are like old schoolfellows; they love to recall their ex periences, and chat about the jokes and tricks and scrapes of their soldiering days.
