Book Reformation Dissent and Diversity

Download or read book Reformation Dissent and Diversity written by Andrew T.N. Muirhead and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-26 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines and describes for the general reader the life and characteristics of the churches which flourished in Scotland between the Reformation and the mid-20th century. It will help both amateur and professional historians to understand the different denominations, and provides background to, and context for, their own research. Church influence on society has been particularly strong in Scotland and church records are a major source of pre-1844 information, but no recent book deals adequately with the church background. Here, the author explores how churches developed in, and interacted with, society. An overview of the churches of Scotland from the Reformation to 1960 is followed by a brief examination of each denomination including doctrinal issues, worship, organization, social and demographic factors, and mapping to show the geographical strengths of particular groups.

Book A Story of the Church in Scotland

Download or read book A Story of the Church in Scotland written by John Macpherson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-08 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Story of the Church in Scotland: From the Earliest Times Down to the Present Day IN this volume an endeavour has been made to render a comprehensive account of ecclesiastical and religious move ments in Scotland from the original planting of Christianity down to the close of the nineteenth century. Avoiding as far as possible details of civil history, attention has been given to Acts of Parliament and contrivances of statesmen only in so far as these have affected the interests of the Church in regard to its government and constitution. In so wide a field it is perhaps too much to expect that the attempt to maintain a fair proportion in the narrative, and strict impartiality of statement, has been altogether suc cessful. But the author has not intentionally passed over anything that should have been told to the credit of any of the denominations that have existed or may yet exist in the Scottish ecclesiastical world; and he has sought to deal faithfully and generously with the memories of the great men who in all the various divisions of the Church in Scot land have contributed to the theological literature and to the religious life of the country. Book The Church in Victorian Scotland 1843 1874

Download or read book The Church in Victorian Scotland 1843 1874 written by Andrew Landale Drummond and published by Edinburgh : Saint Andrew Press. This book was released on 1975 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As this book's predecessor, The Scottish Church, 1688-1843, drew to a close, attention was concentrated on the events leading up to 1843 when the Evangelicals failed to obtain a Disruption between the Scottish Church and the State and instead created a division within the Church itself. This present volume considers other aspects which therefore had to he neglected, but for the most part it gives a picture of the Church in all its branches in mid-Victorian Scotland. Content, rather than strict chronology, determined the planning of the book which is concerned not so much with the great and famous as with the ordinary people of the land, rich and poor, for whose lives there is an abundance of previously unexamined evidence. The urban masses were largely pagan except when Roman Catholic, and distaste for Calvinistic worship and doctrine was taking the landed and educated into the Scottish Episcopal Church. Sectarianism, secularism, social change, and advances in natural science and Biblical criticism created acute problems. Rival and apparently more vigorous Presbyterian Churches 'competed with the Church of Scotland, which now lost its responsibility for social welfare and education and was deprived of State support to cope with the new industrial areas. Yet its remaining contacts with the deprived classes and a more open-minded outlook enabled it to recover from the disaster of 1843. This book is not written from a narrowly denominational standpoint, but deals with beliefs and standards in society at large, believing and unbelieving. Events and thought in this highly important period did much to shape the Scottish Church and nation in the twentieth century. Previously, the age has been uncritically seen as one when Scotland was Calvinistic in outlook, church-going, sabbatarian, strict in - morals, and unquestioning in faith. The facts were not so, as the authors demonstrate in this pioneering study.

Book How the Scots Invented the Modern World

Download or read book How the Scots Invented the Modern World written by Arthur Herman and published by Crown. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exciting account of the origins of the modern world Who formed the first literate society? Who invented our modern ideas of democracy and free market capitalism? The Scots. As historian and author Arthur Herman reveals, in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries Scotland made crucial contributions to science, philosophy, literature, education, medicine, commerce, and politics—contributions that have formed and nurtured the modern West ever since. Herman has charted a fascinating journey across the centuries of Scottish history. Here is the untold story of how John Knox and the Church of Scotland laid the foundation for our modern idea of democracy; how the Scottish Enlightenment helped to inspire both the American Revolution and the U.S. Constitution; and how thousands of Scottish immigrants left their homes to create the American frontier, the Australian outback, and the British Empire in India and Hong Kong. How the Scots Invented the Modern World reveals how Scottish genius for creating the basic ideas and institutions of modern life stamped the lives of a series of remarkable historical figures, from James Watt and Adam Smith to Andrew Carnegie and Arthur Conan Doyle, and how Scottish heroes continue to inspire our contemporary culture, from William “Braveheart” Wallace to James Bond. And no one who takes this incredible historical trek will ever view the Scots—or the modern West—in the same way again.
