Book excerpt: Dear reader, The soul of a book is in the shadows; in the tones...for this reason I am not going to talk of the eleven tales that compose this book, but I tell you where thoughts and feelings that compose those shadows come from. They born from rain and its scent. Wet ground. From a raven that flies on a green field, from the storm; they come from the long noon shadows, from childish Sunday noon sadness. From a broken clock face. From the "last times", when you don't give weight to someone or something and you don't know there will not be an "another time..." they come from snow that falls ...from the "forever", from Seneca and Terzani, from the present, from the burst of laughter. From the colors, from Porto and its boats full of wine; from biggest treasures -the ones we keep inside-, from the falls, from little things, from the taste of the water and the cold air that freezes lungs in a winter morning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most well-read, but non-scientific, people will have heard of the term OC Big BangOCO as a description of the origin of the Universe. They will recognize that DNA identifies individuals and will know that the origin of life is one of the great unsolved scientific mysteries. This book brings together all of that material. Starting with the creation of space and time OCo known as the Big Bang OCo the book traces causally related steps through the formation of matter, of stars and planets, the Earth itself, the evolution of the Earth''s surface and atmosphere, and then through to the beginnings of life and the evolution of man. The material is presented in such a way that a non-scientist can comprehend it, without using formulae or equations but still preserving the integrity of the involved science. This book does not solve the mysteries of what initiated the Big Bang or how life evolved from inanimate matter, but it does make clear the nature of those problems. The reader will be left with a sense of wonderment that he or she actually exists!

Book Hsin Hsin Ming

Download or read book Hsin Hsin Ming written by Osho and published by Osho Media International. This book was released on 2014-11-11 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding our minds and consciousness are topics high on everybody's list of important issues. Science and psychology are delivering every day captivating news of understanding in this area. In this extraordinary series of talks, Osho lays out a clear understanding of the difference between mind and consciousness, and the role that the brain plays in the two - a difference that Western science has been struggling to define for decades, but that Zen has known for centuries through first-hand experience. Along the way he also sheds light on the differences between meditation as practice and as a state of being, and what choiceless awareness really means in everyday life and relating. Osho relates to a classic Zen work, Hsin Hsin Ming, Verses on the Faith-Mind by Sosan [Seng-t’san] which is considered to be the first Chinese Zen document. It is extraordinarily straightforward in its message, cutting straight to the point of where it aims to take the Zen experience - to a state of thought-free awareness in the present moment.

Book Ethics and Dialogue

Download or read book Ethics and Dialogue written by Michael Eskin and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2000 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethics and Dialogue engages with four of the most complex authors of the twentieth century--Levinas, Bakhtin, Mandel'shtam, and Celan--in a hermeneutically and methodologically innovative manner. Construing Levinas's ethical philosophy in conjunction with Bakhtin's philosophy of the act and metalinguistics, as an interpretative framework for making sense of Celan's dialogue with Mandel'shtam, the author develops a highly sophisticated mode of reading poetry--poethics--which takes into account both the ethical significance of poetry and the poetic significance of ethical philosophy. While documenting the viability of Levinas's and Bakhtin's philosophies, Eskin's analyses of Celan's and Mandel'shtam's poetry in the light of its philosophical underpinnings open hitherto unseen vistas on to the workings of twentieth-century poetry in general and on to European modernist and post-World War II poetry in particular.

Book The Restoration of the Name of Jefferson Davis to the Cabin John Bridge Washington District of Columbia

Download or read book The Restoration of the Name of Jefferson Davis to the Cabin John Bridge Washington District of Columbia written by Confederated Southern Memorial Association (U.S.) and published by . This book was released on 1909 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bridge design process had begun in 1853, during the administration of President Franklin Pierce and the Secretary of War, Jefferson Davis. Captain Meigs' 1861 order also called for a tablet on the west bridge abutment, with the title, "Washington Aqueduct" and listing the political leaders that were in office both at the start of the project and at its completion (i.e., Pierce and Davis; President Abraham Lincoln and Secretary of War Simon Cameron). By 1862, however, Davis had left the Union to become President of the Confederate States of America. There was resentment among some members of Congress about the inscription of Davis' name on the bridge, and this led to an order that his name be removed from the tablet. The Department of the Interior, which was managing the aqueduct at that time, ordered the removal of the inscription. In 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt was asked by various constituents to restore Davis' name to the tablet. Roosevelt ordered the restoration.

Book The Mertowney Mountain Interviews

Download or read book The Mertowney Mountain Interviews written by Richard Leviton and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2014-07-16 with total page 619 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You see, Edward, editor and budding Grail Knight, youre part of the Merlin myth, and you have been for a long time, said Merlin enigmatically. The figure of Merlin, magician, enchanter, trickster, strategist of King Arthurs Camelot, wise old man of Celtic myth, has intrigued and enthralled readers for centuries, but who, really, was he? Did he ever actually exist? Boston editor Edward Burbage is given a unique opportunity to find out. Hes invited to Merlins home on Mertowney Mountain to interview him. The invitation includes free transportation, and Merlins mountain is not in this world, and for that matter, how on Earth could Burbage be talking to Merlin anyway? Merlin is supposed to be only a character from an old myth, isnt he? Over the course of five years, starting in 2034, Burbage conducts his interviews, and the revelations Merlin makes are astounding. He has been many mythic figures, taken on many guises, such as the Irish Cuchulainn, the Egyptian Anubis, the Navaho Monster Slayer, the Greek Herakles, the Polynesian Maui, and even a few holy men like Saint Columba of Iona and John the Evangelist of Patmos, author of Revelation. Hes worked as initiator, war-god, slayer of inimical spirits, prophet, seer, a guide to the soul in the after-life, geomancer, terraformer, a fisher up of islands, and especially a devoted field agent to the Great Mother, Herself operating under many guises such as Morrigan, Isis, Changing Woman, and Hera. But why has Edward Burbage been brought to Mertowney Mountain? Its not just so Merlin can tell his true story. Merlin has a plan for him, and hes preparing things all the time hes recounting his exploits. Edward Burbage has a key role to play in the next installment of the long life of Merlin. Hes about to step onto the world stage of myth disclosing a long withheld mystery, the secret of the Mer-Line, the truth and power behind Merlin himself.
