Book A Stone for Benjamin

Download or read book A Stone for Benjamin written by Fiona Gold Kroll and published by . This book was released on 2013-08 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since childhood, author Fiona Gold Kroll has been drawn to a photograph of her great-uncle, Benjamin Albaum, a Jewish man who disappeared from Paris at the beginning of World War II. A Stone for Benjamin is the compelling story of her quest to discover his fate. Chasing Holocaust shadows across Europe and beyond, she begins her powerful journey searching for clues with nothing more than a misspelled name, old photographs and family stories. Determined to uncover the truth about Benjamin's life and death and France's betrayal of its Jewish population, Fiona pieces together her great-uncle's life, elevating Benjamin's legacy from a number tattooed on his arm at Auschwitz to a more complete memory of the vibrant man he was. Kroll s prose is eloquent and evocative, and her writing is admirably self-aware A detailed examination of a Holocaust victim s life and a considerate, thought-provoking look into why Holocaust narratives are important. Book Walter Benjamin s Other History

Download or read book Walter Benjamin s Other History written by Beatrice Hanssen and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2000-12-04 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, Beatrice Hanssen unlocks the philosophical and ethical dimensions of the Trauerspiel study, showing how its thematics persisted well into the later writings of the thirties. For by introducing the materialistic category of natural history in The Origin of German Tragic Drama, Benjamin not only criticized idealistic conceptions of history writing but also expressed an ethico-theological call for another kind of history, one no longer anthropocentric in nature. This profound critique of historical thinking, Hanssen shows, went hand in hand with a radical de-limitation of the human subject, informed by his interest in questions about ethics, the law, and justice. Through an analysis of the seemingly innocuous figures of stones, animals, and angels that are scattered throughout his writings, Hanssen reconstructs the often neglected ethical dimension of his historical thought. In the course of doing so, she not only places Benjamin's work in the context of contemporaries such as Adorno, Cohen, Lukacs, Kafka, Kraus, and Heidegger but also demonstrates the persistence of Benjaminian themes in contemporary philosophy and critical theory.

Book The Art of Possibility

Download or read book The Art of Possibility written by Rosamund Stone Zander and published by Harvard Business Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In their playing you hear not only precision, color and balance, but thunder, lightning and the language of the heart. This is what the Boston Globe said about a performance by conductor Benjamin Zander with the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, but it could apply equally to the Zanders' inspirational book, the product of a synthesis of the diverse worlds of the symphony orchestra and cutting-edge psychology. The Art of Possibility offers a set of breakthrough practices for creativity in all human enterprises. Infused with the energy of their dynamic partnership, the book joins together Ben's extraordinary talent as a mover and shaker, teacher, and communicator, with Rosamund Stone Zander's genius for creating innovative paradigms for personal and professional fulfillment. In lively counterpoint, the authors provide us with a deep sense of the powerful role that the notion of possibility can play in every aspect of our lives. The Zanders' deceptively simple practices are based on two premises: that life is composed as a story ("it's all invented") and that, with new definitions, much more is possible than people ordinarily think. The book shifts our perspective with uplifting stories, parables, and anecdotes from the authors' personal experiences as well as from famous and everyday heroes. From "Giving an A," to the mysterious "Rule Number 6," to "Leading from Any Chair"-the account of Ben's stunning realization that the conductor/leader's power is directly linked to how much greatness he is willing to grant to others-each practice offers an opportunity for personal and organizational transformation. The Art of Possibility provides a life-altering approach to fulfilling dreams large and small. The Zanders invite us all to become passionate communicators, leaders, and performers whose lives radiate possibility into the world. Rosamund Stone Zander is a family therapist and a landscape painter. Benjamin Zander is the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra and a professor at the New England Conservatory of Music. Based on the principles developed through the authors' unique partnership, Mr. Zander gives presentations to managers and executives around the world and Ms. Zander conducts workshops for organizations on practicing the art of possibility.

Book Sir Benjamin Stone s Pictures Festivals ceremonies and customs

Download or read book Sir Benjamin Stone s Pictures Festivals ceremonies and customs written by and published by . This book was released on 1906 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sir Benjamin Stone, Member of Parliament for the Birmingham constituency, was a keen 'amateur' photographer, with a passion for, as he put it, 'unfaked' photographs. In 1897 he was a prime mover behind the National Photographic Record Association, which aimed to gather together an archive of photographs documenting every facet of contemporary British life, printed as carbon prints or platinotypes for permanence. As well as being its primary motivator, activist and publicist, Stone was also the association's most prolific photographer. In 1906, only four years before the association was disbanded owing to its members' apathy, Stone published an example of the king of thing he wanted to achieve with the group: two volumes of his own work, the first on British customs, the second on the Houses of Parliament. ... These two volumes mark the end of the nineteenth-century documentary photobook in Britain--documentary photography in the typological mode. Stone's Festivals, Ceremonies and Customs reflects back on half a century of documentary practice that was never quite carried forward into the next century."--The Photobook : A History Volume I / Martin Parr and Gerry Badger. London: Phaidon, 2004.
