Book excerpt: The 1930s home presented an exciting new way of living for the generation that moved out to the suburbs. Young couples who had previously rented accommodation in urban centers found themselves able to afford new-build homes with hot running water, a bathroom indoors, and even aerials for the wireless already installed. Some four million houses were erected, and interest in interior home decoration boomed. This fully illustrated book introduces the homes that people fell in love with in the 1930s, and the fixtures and fittings that went in them. It is not only a practical and valuable companion for people who own or wish to renovate an inter-war house, but will also appeal to all those interested in period design.

Book Weir of Hermiston by Robert Louis Stevenson

Download or read book Weir of Hermiston by Robert Louis Stevenson written by R. L. Stevenson and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-24 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stevensoń09s unfinished masterpiece, Weir of Hermiston, has been entirely re-edited from his final manuscript, revealing a rather different novel from the bowdlerised version produced posthumously by his friends. Stevenson revisits the conflicted Scotland of James Hogg and Sir Walter Scott as well as that of his own youth, but also responds to recently published novels. A substantial essay explores the complex early publication history of the novel on both sides of the Atlantic, and exceptionally full explanatory notes and other background information are provided.

Book Robert Louis Stevenson and theories of reading

Download or read book Robert Louis Stevenson and theories of reading written by Glenda Norquay and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2024-07-30 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Louis Stevenson and theories of reading is both an exceptionally well researched study of the novelist, and well as an intriguing exploration of 'literary consumption'. Glenda Norquay presents fresh interpretations of Stevenson’s literary essays, of major works including The Master of Ballantrae, and some of his more neglected fiction such as St Ives and The Wrecker, as well as illuminating our understanding of his role within debates over popular fiction, romance and reading pleasure. She offers an unusual combination of literary history and reception theory and argues that Stevenson both exemplified tensions within the literary market of his time and anticipated later developments in reading theory. By combining the study of nineteenth-century cultural politics with detailed analysis of his Scottish Calvinism, Stevenson is reassessed as both a Victorian and Scottish writer. The book is aimed at scholars, postgraduates and undergraduates with an interest in the nineteenth-century literary marketplace, in Scottish culture, and in reading /reception theory as well as Stevenson enthusiasts.

Book Robert Louis Stevenson Literary Networks and Transatlantic Publishing in the 1890s

Download or read book Robert Louis Stevenson Literary Networks and Transatlantic Publishing in the 1890s written by Glenda Norquay and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2020-01-31 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Louis Stevenson, Literary Networks and Transatlantic Publishing in the 1890s investigates Stevenson and the geographies of his literary networks during the last years of his life and after his death. It profiles a series of figures who worked with Stevenson, negotiated his publications on both sides of the Atlantic, wrote for him or were inspired by him. Using archival material, correspondence, fiction and biographies it moves across these literary networks. It deploys the concept of ‘literary prosthetics’ to frame its analysis of gatekeepers, tastemakers, agents, collaborators and authorial surrogates in the transatlantic production of Stevenson’s writing. Case studies of understudied individuals and broader consideration of the networks they represent contribute to knowledge of transatlantic publishing in the 1890s, understanding of transatlantic culture, Stevenson studies, current interest in the workings of literary communities and in nineteenth-century mobility.

Book Literary Culture and the Pacific

Download or read book Literary Culture and the Pacific written by Vanessa Smith and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-01-08 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1998 book examines a range of nineteenth-century European accounts from the Pacific, depicting Polynesian responses to imported metropolitan culture, in particular its technologies of writing and print. Texts designed to present self-affirming images of 'native' wonderment at European culture in fact betray the emergence of more complex modes of appropriation and interrogation by the Pacific peoples. Vanessa Smith argues that the Pacific islanders called into question the material basis and symbolic capacities of writing, even as they were first being framed in written representations. Examining accounts by beachcombers and missionaries, she suggests that complex modes of self-authorization informed the transmission of new cultural practices to the Pacific peoples. This shift of attention towards reception and appropriation provides the context for a detailed discussion of Robert Louis Stevenson's late Pacific writings.
