Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sediment Transport Processes and their Modelling Applications is a book which covers a wide range of topics. The effective management of many aquatic environments, requires a detailed understanding of sediment dynamics. This has both environmental and economic implications, especially where there is any anthropogenic involvement. Numerical models are often the tool used for predicting the transport and fate of sediment movement in these situations, as they can estimate the various spatial and temporal fluxes. However, the physical sedimentary processes can vary quite considerably depending upon whether the local sediments are fully cohesive, non-cohesive, or a mixture of both types. For this reason for more than half a century, scientists, engineers, hydrologists and mathematicians have all been continuing to conduct research into the many aspects which influence sediment transport. These issues range from processes such as scour, erosion and deposition, to how sediment process observations can be applied in sediment transport modelling frameworks. This book reports the findings from recent research in applied sediment transport which has been conducted in a wide range of aquatic environments. The research was carried out by researchers who specialise in the transport of sediments and related issues.

Book Modelling and Analysis of Fine Sediment Transport in Wave Current Bottom Boundary Layer

This book was released on 2018-06-19 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolution and utilization of estuarine and coastal regions are greatly restricted by sediment problems. This thesis aims to better understand fine sediment transport under combined action of waves and currents, especially in the wave-current bottom boundary layer (BBL). Field observations, experimental data analysis, theoretical analysis and numerical models are employed. Silt-dominated sediments are sensitive to flow dynamics and the suspended sediment concentration (SSC) increase rapidly under strong flow dynamics. This research unveils several fundamental aspects of silty sediment, i.e., the criterion of the incipient motion, the SSC profiles and their phase-averaged parameterization in wave-dominated conditions. An expression for sediment incipient motion is proposed for silt-sand sediment under combined wave and current conditions. A process based intra-wave 1DV model for flow-sediment dynamics near the bed is developed in combined wave-current conditions. The high concentration layer (HCL) was simulated and sensitivity analysis was carried out by the 1DV model on factors that impact the SSC in the HCL. Finally, based on the 1DV model, the formulations of the mean SSC profile of silt-sand sediments in wave conditions were proposed. The developed approaches are expected to be applied in engineering practice and further simulation.

Book A Unified Sediment Transport Formulation for Coastal Inlet Application

Download or read book A Unified Sediment Transport Formulation for Coastal Inlet Application written by Benoît Camenen and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Coastal Inlets Research Program (CIRP) is developing predictive numerical models for simulating the waves, currents, sediment transport, and morphology change at and around coastal inlets. Water motion at a coastal inlet is a combination of quasi-steady currents such as river flow, tidal current, wind-generated current, and seiching, and of oscillatory flows generated by surface waves. Waves can also create quasi-steady currents, and the waves can be breaking or non-breaking, greatly changing potential for sediment transport. These flows act in arbitrary combinations with different magnitudes and directions to mobilize and transport sediment. Reliable prediction of morphology change requires accurate predictive formulas for sediment transport rates that smoothly match in the various regimes of water motion. This report describes results of a research effort conducted to develop unified sediment transport rate predictive formulas for application in the coastal inlet environment. The formulas were calibrated with a wide range of available measurements compiled from the laboratory and field and then implemented in the CIRP's Coastal Modeling System. Emphasis of the study was on reliable predictions over a wide range of input conditions. All relevant physical processes were incorporated to obtain greatest generality, including: (1) bed load and suspended load, (2) waves and currents, (3) breaking and non-breaking waves, (4) bottom slope, (5) initiation of motion, (6) asymmetric wave velocity, and (7) arbitrary angle between waves and current. A large database on sediment transport measurements made in the laboratory and the field was compiled to test different aspects of the formulation over the widest possible range of conditions. Other phenomena or mechanisms may also be of importance, such as the phase lag between water and sediment motion or the influence of bed forms. Modifications to the general formulation are derived to take these phenomena into account. The.

Book Coupling Sediment Transport and Water Quality Models

Download or read book Coupling Sediment Transport and Water Quality Models written by Yi Xiong and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sediment has profound effects on water quality. Correspondingly, water quality modeling often needs sediment transport modeling. However, simplified descriptive sediment transport was originally employed for water quality modeling, and the linkage between sediment transport models and water quality models is less developed. Therefore, the main purposes of this study were to develop general methods of coupling sediment transport and water quality models and to improve sediment transport modeling for water quality modeling. Linkage of sediment transport and water quality was discussed and a comprehensive sediment transport literature review was conducted. SEDDEER (Sediment Deposition and Erosion), a stand-alone sediment and contaminant fate and transport model, which simulates one water box and the underlying multiple sediment bed layers, was developed. SEDDEER for Visual Basic for Application (SEDDEER_VBA) was written in VBA. SEDDEER for FORTRAN (SEDDEER_FOR) is the corresponding FORTRAN model. To improve WASP in terms of sediment transport, SEDDEER_FOR was incorporated into the WASP TOXI7 module as the starting point to generate the coupled WASP model (WASP_SEDDEER). Verification and validation of SEDDEER_VBA were conducted prior to model application and incorporation. A comprehensive model test was performed to show that SEDDEER_FOR is computationally identical to SEDDEER_VBA. Simple tests were carried out to verify the fluxes across the sediment-water interface and ensure that the coupling of the WASP water column and SEDDEER bed models is correct. The testing results indicated that these models were verified and/or validated. SEDDEER was used to evaluate the effects of sediment on contaminant transport. WASP_SEDDEER, WASP7.4, and EFDC were applied to Mobile Bay to demonstrate the capabilities of WASP_SEDDEER, and WASP_SEDDEER produced a reasonable and consistent modeling result. The results of the study indicated that SEDDEER can be used for one-box sediment and contaminant fate and transport modeling, and also incorporated into water quality models. In addition, WASP_SEDDEER coupling was implemented correctly and can be applied to the real world. Finally, study results show that sediment affects contaminant fate and transport mostly by external forcing and flow conditions, and contaminant fate and transport varies with different sediment and contaminant characteristics and sediment transport processes.
