Book A Spirituality for Sunday People

Download or read book A Spirituality for Sunday People written by Fr. Kevin E. Mackin OFM and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2017-02-02 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spirituality is “growing into our life with God.” It is letting the breath or Spirit of God live and breathe and work in us. And the fruits of that are “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” (Gal 5:22–23). The Word proclaimed Sunday after Sunday is inspired by God. Jesus, the incarnate Word of God, entered into our history and fully embraced our humanity. In a similar fashion, the Bible is the Word of God, communicated through human authors with their particular worldviews. This collection of homilies reflects on the Word in today’s life.

Book Saturday People Sunday People

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saturday People, Sunday People is a unique portrait of Israel as seen through the eyes of a Christian who came for a visit and has stayed on for more than six years. Long fascinated by a land that has become an abstraction centering on international conflicts of epic proportions, Lela Gilbert arrived in Israel on a personal pilgrimage in August 2006—in the midst of a raging war. What she found was a vibrant country, enlivened by warm-hearted, lively people of great intelligence and decency. Saturday People, Sunday People tells the story of the real Israel and of real Israelis—ordinary and extraordinary—and the energetic rhythm of their lives, even during times of tragedy and terror. The book interweaves a memoir of Gilbert’s experiences with Israel’s people and places, alongside a rich account of past and present events that continue to shape the lives of Israelis and the world beyond their borders. As she watched events unfold in the Middle East, Gilbert witnessed how the simplest facts turned into lies, from denial of the existence of a Jewish Temple in Jerusalem to the characterization of Israel’s defensive border fence as “Apartheid.” Then Gilbert learned of a story that had all but vanished into history: the persecution and pogroms that drove more than 850,000 Jews from Muslim lands between 1948 and 1970—the “Forgotten Refugees.” Their experience is now repeating itself among Christian communities in those same Muslim countries. This cruel pattern embodies the Islamist slogan calling for the elimination of “First the Saturday people, then the Sunday people.”

Book Building a Spiritual Nation

Download or read book Building a Spiritual Nation written by Theodore Andoseh and published by ZTF Books Online. This book was released on with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A spiritual nation is an organ possessed by the Holy Spirit for the accomplishment of God's end-time purposes. Through a distinct relationship with God, Moses built the nation of Israel around the major vector of making them into the people of God and making out of them a people for God. Prophet Samuel brought in the fulness of God through his walk with God to offer the nation of Israel a spiritual model in three distinct domains—an unusual walk with God; a distinct ministry, and leadership blamelessness. King David brought in might in nine domains in forging the nation of Israel. His invincible arsenal of mighty men, mighty deeds, mighty hearts, mighty numbers, mighty faith, and teams of mighty men brought uncountable victories that ushered Israel into a great nation. The Lord Jesus Christ came to found a great kingdom with many units called nations by making disciples and by making those, who like him, will make disciples—and the apostles were the builders. In a sense, every ministry, every community, has a founder and the rest are builders of that spiritual community. In this live narrative compilation from the 14th session of the annual 40-day Praise, Prayer, and Fasting Crusade of our community, a portrait of a great spiritual nation and spiritual nation builders is projected and prayed through for the community in the light of the lessons learned from the above four outstanding Biblical models. The Lord bless you exceedingly as you relive this life-changing event!!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Young spiritual leaders are beginning to remove the reasons why so many of us have kept religion at arm's length. "Spiritual sagacity does not belong only to seniors like Mother Teresa and Dorothy Day, Martin Buber and Abraham Joshua Heschel, the veteran Desmond Tutu and the aging Dalai Lama. Let's hear from a generation that is marked by new experiences." —from the Preface by Martin E. Marty By transforming our faith traditions in light of today's increasing diversity, the search for community, the Internet and our changing lifestyles, these young, visionary spiritual leaders are helping to create the new spirituality. Ten contributors, most in their mid-thirties, span the spectrum of religious traditions—Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, Unitarian, Buddhist—and offer their "visions," bold spiritual manifestos, for transforming our faith communities and our lives. Hear how one Catholic priest proclaims "all religion and spirituality ought to be zesty, passionate, rich and deep"; how one rabbi serves a "congregation" on the web for Microsoft and rides in squad cars on drug busts in New York City; how a self-described "Zen priest" is serving an Episcopal church in Alaska; and how a talented young woman lives her "wild and precious life" changing the world as a nun. These stories, and others, will challenge your assumptions about what religion is—and isn't.

Book Financing the Flames

Download or read book Financing the Flames written by Edwin Black and published by Dialog Press. This book was released on 2013-10-30 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Financing the Flames pulls the cover off the robust use of US tax-exempt, tax-subsidized, and public monies to foment agitation, systematically destabilize the Israel Defense Forces, and finance terrorists in Israel. In a far-flung investigation in the United States, Israel and the West Bank, human-rights investigative reporter Edwin Black documents that it is actually the highly politicized human rights organizations and NGOs themselves all American taxpayer supported which are financing the flames that make peace in Israel difficult if not impossible. Black spotlights key charitable organizations such as the Ford Foundation, George Soros s Open Society Foundations, the New Israel Fund, and many others, as well as American taxpayers as a group. Instead of promoting peace and reconciliation between Arabs and Israelis, a variety of taxpayer-subsidized organizations have funded a culture where peace does not pay, but warfare and confrontation do. Ironically, several Jewish organizations, scooping up millions in tax-subsidized donations, stand at the forefront of the problem. At the same time, the author details at great length the laudable and helpful activities of such groups as the New Israel Fund; he chronicles a heartbreaking conflict between stated intent and true impact on the ground. In addition to documenting questionable 501(c)(3) activity, Black documents the direct relationship between taxpayer assistance to the Palestinian Authority and individuals engaged in terrorism against civilians.

  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book Blessed written by Kate Bowler and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-05-08 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How have millions of American Christians come to measure spiritual progress in terms of their financial status and physical well-being? How has the movement variously called Word of Faith, Health and Wealth, Name It and Claim It, or simply prosperity gospel come to dominate much of our contemporary religious landscape? Kate Bowler's Blessed is the first book to fully explore the origins, unifying themes, and major figures of a burgeoning movement that now claims millions of followers in America. Bowler traces the roots of the prosperity gospel: from the touring mesmerists, metaphysical sages, pentecostal healers, business oracles, and princely prophets of the early 20th century; through mid-century positive thinkers like Norman Vincent Peale and revivalists like Oral Roberts and Kenneth Hagin; to today's hugely successful prosperity preachers. Bowler focuses on such contemporary figures as Creflo Dollar, pastor of Atlanta's 30,000-member World Changers Church International; Joel Osteen, known as "the smiling preacher," with a weekly audience of seven million; T. D. Jakes, named by Time magazine one of America's most influential new religious leaders; Joyce Meyer, evangelist and women's empowerment guru; and many others. At almost any moment, day or night, the American public can tune in to these preachers-on TV, radio, podcasts, and in their megachurches-to hear the message that God desires to bless them with wealth and health. Bowler offers an interpretive framework for scholars and general readers alike to understand the diverse expressions of Christian abundance as a cohesive movement bound by shared understandings and common goals.

Book Expository Preaching in a World of Spiritual Nominalism

Download or read book Expository Preaching in a World of Spiritual Nominalism written by R. T. Johnson Raih and published by Langham Monographs. This book was released on 2021-10-06 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spiritual decay of nominalism threatens the established church worldwide. While spiritual lethargy is often addressed from the perspective of theology and discipleship, little attention has been given to the role of homiletics in revitalizing a congregation’s spiritual health. In this study, Dr. Johnson Raih explores the impact of preaching on members of Baptist churches in Imphal, Manipur, India, from 2000 to 2015. He utilizes interviews and questionnaires from pastors, church leaders, and lay members to assess the presence of nominalism within church congregations, along with the effects of various preaching methods on increasing or decreasing spiritual vitality. Combining this qualitative research with scriptural and theological insight, Raih suggests that expository preaching has the power to confront, and even eradicate, nominalism within the church. He draws on biblical examples, along with the methodology of John Stott and Timothy Keller, to offer ten practical recommendations for countering nominalism homiletically – whether in Imphal, India, or around the world.

Mackin, OFM, features drama, wisdom, and humor. They illuminate Advent and Christmas, Lent and Easter, and “ordinary time”; and they prompt the reader to contemplate and celebrate God’s gifts.

Download or read book Spiritual Formation written by Larry E. Houck and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2015-02-09 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we form a strong spiritual life when even wholesome activities can drain spiritual energy? How and when should we extend Christ-honoring compassion to others? Using the cross as a visual, Spiritual Formation guides us through four sections of developing an ever-increasing vertical passion for God and never-failing horizontal compassion for others. The familiar disciplines and exercises of Spiritual Formation would seem to produce cloned Christians, but Dr. Houck explains how personalities, strengths, and weaknesses determine how we live out these disciplines. No matter how much passion for God and passion for others we develop, we never cease movement through Spiritual Formation sections. Joy found in the journey will lead us back to section one to embrace those who have not yet started the journey or have faltered on the way. Spiritual Formation: The Joy of the Journey calls each of us to follow Gods unique personal path to passion for God and compassion for others.

Download or read book Faith in the Marketplace written by Samuel Lee and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-04-12 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary missions often include evangelistic and socio-economic dimensions. For effective missions, some way of assessing what is being achieved is needed beyond just the common metrics touching on the spiritual and/or economic which neglects social transformation that ideally should also be occurring. This book seeks to identify key factors for holistic evaluation based on salient characteristics that emerged as three Entrepreneurial Church Planting sites were studied in San Francisco (Redeemer Community Church), Selma, Alabama (Blue Jean Church), and Lynch, Kentucky (Meridzo Ministries). What emerges from these case studies is the importance of relationality, general emphasis on growth and development, and a well-established focus on holistic transformation. The mechanisms for the operation of holistic transformation are spelled out to reflect the operation of the three actors of the Trinity in missions. The practical component of the book is the conceptual framework that reveals the operation of holistic transformation and ways to measure the dynamic relationships that occur.

Book The Great Revivalists in American Religion 1740 1944

Download or read book The Great Revivalists in American Religion 1740 1944 written by William H. Cooper, Jr. and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a historical and theological understanding of how and why Christian revivalism came to be what it is, mainly a series of ineffective meetings. The work shows how revivalism moved from the Edwardian emphasis on the amazing works of God, as the Puritans would have put it, to the "new methods" of Charles Finney and revival as the reasonable works of man as befits Jacksonian democracy. Later, D.L. Moody concentrated on methodology to such a degree that revivals became big business and the focus of the Gilded Age. With Billy Sunday, revivalism has lost all content and has become nothing more than entertainment.
