Book Principles and Procedures of Numerical Analysis

Download or read book Principles and Procedures of Numerical Analysis written by Ferenc Szidarovszky and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is an incontestable fact that numerical analysis techniques are used rou tinely (although not always effectively) in virtually every quantitative field of scientific endeavor. In this book, which is directed toward upper-division and graduate level students in engineering and mathematics, we have selected for discussion subjects that are traditionally found in numerical analysis texts. But our choice of methodology rejects the traditional where analysis and experience clearly warrant such a departure, and one of our primary aspirations in this work is to equip the reader with the wherewithal to apply numerical analysis thinking to nontraditional subjects. For there is a plethora of computer-oriented sciences such as optimization, statistics, and system analysis and identification that are sorely in need of methods comparable to those related here for classical numerical analysis problems. Toward uncovering for the reader the structure of numerical methods we have, for example, devoted a chapter to a metric space theory for iter ative application of operators. In this chapter, we have collected those definitions and concepts of real and functional analysis that are requisite to a modern intermediate-level exposition of the principles of numerical anal ysis. Further, we derive the abstract theory (most notably, the contraction mapping theorem) for iteration processes.

Book Multiple Time Scales

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jeremiah U. Brackbill
  • Publisher : Academic Press
  • Release : 2014-05-10
  • ISBN : 1483257568
  • Pages : 457 pages

Download or read book Multiple Time Scales written by Jeremiah U. Brackbill and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple Time Scales presents various numerical methods for solving multiple-time-scale problems. The selection first elaborates on considerations on solving problems with multiple scales; problems with different time scales; and nonlinear normal-mode initialization of numerical weather prediction models. Discussions focus on analysis of observations, nonlinear analysis, systems of ordinary differential equations, and numerical methods for problems with multiple scales. The text then examines the diffusion-synthetic acceleration of transport iterations, with application to a radiation hydrodynamics problem and implicit methods in combustion and chemical kinetics modeling. The publication ponders on molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations of rare events; direct implicit plasma simulation; orbit averaging and subcycling in particle simulation of plasmas; and hybrid and collisional implicit plasma simulation models. Topics include basic moment method, electron subcycling, gyroaveraged particle simulation, and the electromagnetic direct implicit method. The selection is a valuable reference for researchers interested in pursuing further research on the use of numerical methods in solving multiple-time-scale problems.

Book Applied Groundwater Modeling

Download or read book Applied Groundwater Modeling written by Mary P. Anderson and published by Gulf Professional Publishing. This book was released on 1992 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creating numerical groundwater models of field problems requires careful attention to describing the problem domain, selecting boundary conditions, assigning model parameters, and calibrating the model. This unique text describes the science and art of applying numerical models of groundwater flow and advective transport of solutes. Explains how to formulate a conceptual model of a system and how to translate it into a numerical model Includes the application of modeling principles with special attention to the finite difference flow codes PLASM and MODFLOW, and the finite-element code AQUIFEM-1 Covers model calibration, verification, and validation Discusses pathline analysis for tracking contaminants with reference to newly developed particle tracking codes Makes extensive use of case studies and problems
