Book A Spear Carrier in Viet Nam

Download or read book A Spear Carrier in Viet Nam written by Michael E. Tolle and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-10-23 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There was another war in Vietnam, one that mostly did not make the headlines: the campaign to "win the hearts and minds" of the Vietnamese people. Fought not with artillery and helicopters but with food, medicine and shelter for civilians devastated by the conflict, the effort was unprecedented in U.S. history, involving both military and civilian personnel working together in widely spread areas of the countryside. Part history and part memoir, this book chronicles an overlooked aspect of U.S. involvement in Vietnam, with a focus on the war victims and refugees who were most tragically affected by the carnage. The author recounts his two years "in-country" as an aid worker and tells how the humanitarian effort was conducted and why it failed.

Book excerpt: This book presents a detailed tabular review of U.S. carriers and squadrons between the end of Vietnam and the start of the new millennium. Over 200 separate at sea periods are covered in this work. Each chapter contains impressive data that details every major carrier deployment covered. Each ship, wing and squadron that operated during the period is included as well as short narrative commentary that provides a wealth of background information. Combat and near-combat operations are covered as well with specific emphasis placed on the units involved and victories/losses in each engagement. Squadron lineages as well as background information on each of the Navy's carrier aviation communities is included. John Matlock "Gunny" (March 2007) Another beautiful book from Schiffer Publishing. It's the most complete story of the Navy's recent carriers available. 1974 was a watershed year in that the carriers used in Viet Nam were more than just a little weary. They needed heavy repair, or replacement. This makes it a good starting place for a book like this. From 1974 until now, here is just about the complete history of U.S. carrier operations. It has chapters on the carriers themselves (each carrier used by the Navy during this time), the deployments where they went into action, the Air Wings, the Fighter Squadrons, Attack Squadrons and all the other squadrons that make up the fleet. And yes, the Marines are included also. The book is beautifully illustrated and printed, and uses seqn bindings for a long life. It is hands down the most complete recent book on carriers available and highly recommended. The Title: The Tip of the Spear is the small percentage of military people who are at the forefront of any operation. It's not the supply people, or the intelligence people. It's the warriors, those people right at the front line. And for a lot of years now, that's where the cariers have been, right at the 'pointy end' of U.S. forces. AUTHOR: Rock Morgan began collecting the material for what became this book over three decades ago. Although he lived on a succession of Air Force bases while growing up Rick credits a visit to NAS Alameda, CA in 1971 with igniting his interest in Naval Aviation. The author graduated form Alamogordo (New Mexico) Senior High School in 1974 and accepted a Naval ROTC scholarship to the University of Missouri, from which he was commissioned an ensign in 1978. He subsequently earned the qualifications f both Naval Aviator and Naval Flight Officer. He served with VAQ-33, 129, 139 and 141 over a span of sixteen years, flew in excess of 2300 hours in the EA-6B Prowler and participated in forty-one combat missions during Operation Desert Storm. 150 colour & b/w photographs

Book The Tragedy of Cambodian History

Download or read book The Tragedy of Cambodian History written by David Porter Chandler and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1991-01-01 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The political history of Cambodia between 1945 and 1979, which culminated in the devastating revolutionary excesses of the Pol Pot regime, is one of unrest and misery. This book by David P. Chandler is the first to give a full account of this tumultuous period. Drawing on his experience as a foreign service officer in Phnom Penh, on interviews, and on archival material. Chandler considers why the revolution happened and how it was related to Cambodia's earlier history and to other events in Southeast Asia. He describes Cambodia's brief spell of independence from Japan after the end of World War II; the long and complicated rule of Norodom Sihanouk, during which the Vietnam War gradually spilled over Cambodia's borders; the bloodless coup of 1970 that deposed Sihanouk and put in power the feeble, pro-American government of Lon Nol; and the revolution in 1975 that ushered in the radical changes and horrors of Pol Pot's Communist regime. Chandler discusses how Pol Pot and his colleagues evacuated Cambodia's cities and towns, transformed its seven million people into an unpaid labor force, tortured and killed party members when agricultural quotas were unmet, and were finally overthrown in the course of a Vietnamese military invasion in 1979. His book is a penetrating and poignant analysis of this fierce revolutionary period and the events of the previous quarter-century that made it possible.

Book Political Awakenings

Download or read book Political Awakenings written by Harry Kreisler and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2011-03 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a kid, Noam Chomsky handed out the Daily Mirror at his uncle's newsstand on 72nd Street, inadvertently finding himself in a buzzing intellectual and political hub for European immigrants in New York. Iranian human rights Nobelist Shirin Ebadi and her husband signed their own legal contract, attempting to restore equality to their marriage after the Iranian Revolution effectively erased the legal rights of women. Elizabeth Warren set out to expose those frauds declaring bankruptcy and taking advantage of the system-only to discover, in her research, a very different story of hard-working middle-class families facing economic collapse in the absence of a social safety net. While studying at Oxford, a young Tariq Ali made a bet with a friend that he could work the Vietnam War into every single answer on his final exams. In this rousing, thoughtful, often funny, and always inspiring volume, a diverse and impressive group of thinkers reflect on those formative experiences that shaped their own political commitments. A fascinating new window into the revealing links between the personal and the political, Political Awakenings will engage readers across generations.
