Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Souvenir History of Lincoln County, Kansas This book has been compiled from the written and verbal accounts of those who ought to know the history of Lincoln County. Personally I knew nothing of this history when I began gathering the material, and when stories conflicted I was not prejudiced to either opinion but tried in all possible ways to ascertain the actual facts In the case. I have interviewed most of the early settlers and those to whom I am most indebted are: J. J. Peate, Richard Clark, and Chalmer Smith of Beverly; John S. Strange, N. B. Rees, Anna C. Wait, Fred Erhardt, Adolph Roenigk, E. M. Harris, Martin Hendrickson, Daniel Day, Cris. Bernhardt, C. M. Heaton, Tone Bishop, Ogden Green, Myron Green of Lincoln; William Baird of Vesper; Mrs. Morgan and A. R. Buzick of Sylvan Grove. Those from a distance who have contributed letters and articles are: F. A. Schemerhorn, Eli Ziegler, and A. T. Biggs. Others have been kind enough to loan clippings. Among these clippings were articles by J. R. Mead, J. J. Peate, Thomas Strange, Washington Smith, Gen. Geo. A. Forsyth, also several important articles by unknown parties. Besides getting the statements of these people I have read the tiles of at least one newspaper from '73 down to date and searched the archives of the State Historical Society diligently and gleaned all I could from that source. A special vote of thanks is due the newspapers and others who have loaned cuts and pictures. I wish to make special mention of those who have advertised in this book. They are the fellows who are up-to-date and progressive or they wouldn't be here. And it is the man who is public spirited, liberal, and broad minded with whom you want to deal, not simply because he will do the best for the community but because he will do the best by you. As you read this book just notice who these men are. I have done my best to give a true account of the happenings of Lincoln County. I know there will be some mistakes, and I do not anticipate that everybody will agree with even that part of my story which is correct. If you do not agree with me do not ask me to change it now. If there is anything left out which you think ought to have been put in you should have spoken of it last summer. In case this book meets with your approval I shall be happy. In case it does not I refuse to worry. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A History of Republic County Kansas Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Republic County Kansas Classic Reprint written by Isaac O. Savage and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Republic County, Kansas A single county in the great state of Kansas occupies but an insignificant place on the map of the world, and its people and its story are comparatively unknown. Yet the grand river of national history is formed by the union of many rills of traditions and record, flowing from a thousand counties and states all over the land. The tracing of one of these rills to its source is the province of the present little volume. It is the aim of this work to collect and preserve some of the facts of the early settlement, subsequent growth and development of one of the leading counties of a young, yet great and glorious state. The families who were early on the ground, and whose members have contributed to make the county what it is, are worthy of remembrance; and their difficulties and sorrows, labors and patriotism, should not be allowed to fall into oblivion. By a knowledge of these, the present generation will be instructed, and the future will be guided. All history, if properly written, is profitable; and there is not a country, or a city, or a hamlet, on the globe, whose history might not be more or less valuable to posterity. We trust this little volume will be the means of preserving from the empire of decay Si host of incidents, of recollections and of anecdotes relating to the land of pioneers and first settlers of the county, which, in the estimation of the historian and student of history, are of priceless value, but which otherwise would soon fade from the memories of the living. Still, a perfect and complete history of any county is one of the impossibilities, and this work may be incomplete in many particulars. Nor, indeed, is it possible for it to be otherwise, as it is not permitted any man to attain perfection. Its regions lie beyond our reach. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kansas History Finally, the author has tried to avoid the use of much contro versial matter with which the literature of Kansas history is so plentifully deluged. To eliminate all material of that character is clearly impossible, for as yet much of the most valuable of our historical writing is the work of active participants in the stirring history of our early days and necessarily is personal.
