Most historians point to the larger number of Union troops, for example, or the North's greater industrial might. Now, in The South Vs. the South, one of America's leading authorities on the Civil War era offers an entirely new answer to this question. William Freehling argues that anti-Confederate Southerners--specifically, border state whites and southern blacks--helped cost the Confederacy the war. White men in such border states as Missouri, Kentucky, and Maryland, Freehling points out, were divided in their loyalties--but far more joined the Union army (or simply stayed home) than marched off in Confederate gray. If they had enlisted as rebel troops in the same proportion as white men did farther south, their numbers would have offset all the Confederate casualties during four years of war. Book excerpt: The Southern Strategy was but one in a series of decisions the GOP made not just on race, but on feminism and religion as well, in what Angie Maxwell and Todd Shields call the "Long Southern Strategy." The Southern Strategy is traditionally understood as a Goldwater and Nixon-era effort by the Republican Party to win over disaffected white voters in the Democratic stronghold of the American South. To realign these voters with the GOP, the party abandoned its past support for civil rights and used racially coded language to capitalize on southern white racial angst. However, that decision was but one in a series of decisions the GOP made not just on race, but on feminism and religion as well, in what Angie Maxwell and Todd Shields call the "Long Southern Strategy." In the wake of Second-Wave Feminism, the GOP dropped the Equal Rights Amendment from its platform and promoted traditional gender roles in an effort to appeal to anti-feminist white southerners, particularly women. And when the leadership of the Southern Baptist Convention became increasingly fundamentalist and politically active, the GOP tied its fate to the Christian Right. With original, extensive data on national and regional opinions and voting behavior, Maxwell and Shields show why all three of those decisions were necessary for the South to turn from blue to red. To make inroads in the South, however, GOP politicians not only had to take these positions, but they also had to sell them with a southern "accent." Republicans embodied southern white culture by emphasizing an "us vs. them" outlook, preaching absolutes, accusing the media of bias, prioritizing identity over the economy, encouraging defensiveness, and championing a politics of retribution. In doing so, the GOP nationalized southern white identity, rebranded itself to the country at large, and fundamentally altered the vision and tone of American politics.

Book excerpt: The taxonomy of the genus Malacothamnus (Malvaceae) has been controversial for many years due to conflicting treatments and the many taxa of conservation concern not recognized in some of these treatments. Purported intergradation and hybridization are the primary justifications for not recognizing these taxa. Two recent morphological studies examining small subsets of Malacothamnus taxa debunked the purported ambiguities between the taxa analyzed and provided evidence for a new species. This indicated a morphological assessment of the full genus would be highly beneficial to identify and clarify both morphological groupings and character states within the genus prior to testing taxon hypotheses within a phylogenetic framework. This study follows the previous two by examining the remaining subsets of Malacothamnus taxa that have been combined and/or confused in the past. These subsets are analyzed with principle component analysis (PCA), pairwise permutational multivariate analysis of variance (PERMANOVA), and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) to answer (1) whether taxa relegated to synonymy by some authors are morphologically distinct or not, (2) whether there is morphological evidence to support purported intergradation between taxa, (3) whether previously defined morphological boundaries between taxa are justifiable or need refining, and (4)whether populations of hypothesized novel taxa are morphologically distinct from the taxathey have been included within. Twenty-nine previously named and nine unnamed morphological groupings were recovered in taxon subset analyses. These were then included in a global analysis of the genus followed by comparisons of morphological characters between all groupings. The 38 morphological groups recovered range in distinctness from clear taxa that are both morphologically and geographically distinct to intergrading forms needing further research to base taxonomic decisions upon. These 38 morphological groups are assessed as hypothetical lineages using phylogenetic analyses in Volume 2 of this monograph.
