Many of the basic texts of the past have already been translated into English, French and German from the original Sanskrit, Greek, Latin, and Arabic. However, a number of important texts have never been translated into English. The authors are presenting all these materials to the English reading professionals in Medicine and Dental Medicine in this 864 page reference book.

From approximately 1375 onwards, the use of English began to gain a firmer foothold in medical manuscripts, which in previous centuries had been written mainly in Latin or French. Scholars of Middle English, and editors of medical texts from late medieval England, are thus faced with a huge medical vocabulary which no single volume has yet attempted to define. This dictionary is therefore an essential reference tool. The material analysed in the Dictionary of Medical Vocabulary in English, 1375–1550 includes edited texts, manuscripts and early printed books, and represents three main types of medical writing: surgical manuals and tracts; academic treatises by university-trained physicians, and remedybooks. In any ways his anatomical studies were more detailed and comprehensive than those of his more famous contemporary Andreas Vesalius (1514-1564), but his major studies remained unknown until their eventual publication in Amsterdam in the beautiful edition of 1714 ... Eustachio's contributions to the development of dental science were substantial In addition to the many conceptual advances concerning tooth development and function, based on anatomical dissections, he also presented more detailed plates of the musculature of the face, floor of the mouth and neck as well as detailed plates of the tongue and of the crown and roots of the teeth ... In addition to the first clear description of dental pulp and root canal, Eustachio described the periodontal membrane for the first time and thought of it as a gomphosis type of joint. (He) understood that the crowns of the teeth were composed of enamel overlaying dentin and this was the first description of the two separate tissues of the tooth. Occlusion was described in detail in man as well as animals. The permanent teeth were found to develop from dental follicles, and not from the roots of deciduous teeth as postulated by Vesalius.
