Book A Source Book of Biological Nature Study Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Source Book of Biological Nature Study Classic Reprint written by Elliot Rowland Downing and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-24 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Source Book of Biological Nature-Study Never before in this country has there been so insistent a demand for a more thorough and more comprehensive system of instruction in practical science. Forced by recent events to compare our education with that of other nations, we have suddenly become aware of our negligence in this matter. Now industrial and educational experts and commissions are united in demanding a change. While on the whole there has been a steady increase in the amount of time given to science work in the secondary and elementary schools, the attention paid to it, especially in the elementary schools, has been somewhat spasmodic, and its administration has been more or less chaotic. This is not due to lack of interest on the part of school officials but to their dissatisfaction with the methods of instruction employed. There is no doubt that superintendents would gladly introduce more science if they felt sure that the educational results would be commensurate with the time expended. This is indicated by a recent survey of about one hundred and fifty cities in seven states of the Central West. The survey shows that two-thirds of them have nature-study in the elementary schools and that all are requiring some science for graduation from the high school. The average high school is offering three years of science. Moreover, greater attention is now being paid to the training of teachers in methods of presentation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Nature Study, Vol. 6 First, as regards sunshine and temperature, bring out the fact that on any given day it is always hotter in the sun than out of it; that our hottest days are those when the sun Shines longest (roughly speaking, that is) that it is colder at night when the sun does not shine than in the day when it does, and so arrive at the deduction that the sun is the great source of heat. What then becomes of the sun on cloudy and foggy days? The teacher will be wise to devote much time to the answering of this question, for the fact of the sun's presence in the sky on dull and Cloudy days, behind the clouds, is by no means clearly realised by children and uninstructed people. Download or read book The Study of Nature Classic Reprint written by Samuel Christian Schmucker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study of Nature The teacher is the trained individual set by experience to accomplish, by the quickening processes Of method and principle, the speediest orderly comprehension in each individual of the richest inheritance of thought that the race has treasured for its legitimate heir, the child. The teacher studies the time element in the educational process. He is conscious of the need for such an elimination of non-vital elements in the data of the school as will bring the learner in the briefest time to the highest mental development and to the posses sion of a fairly varied and extended field of facts. The teacher also studies the mental complex of each learner, and ascertains how this varies in the several learners and in the several stages of growth in each learner. This knowledge, combined with relatively full under standing Of the subject matter to be taught, enables him to bring the learner speedily and surely into his best estate. Book The Wonder of Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Wonder of Life Classic Reprint written by John Arthur Thomson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 770 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wonder of Life HE aim of this book is to illustrate the ever-growing wonder of animated Nature - with especial reference to animal life. It is an unconventional introduction to Natural History and Biology, taking broad views of the actual lives of living creatures and working inwards. It is therefore complementary to other books which begin with the minute analysis of the individual. The author hopes that it may be found useful in nature-study as a continuation of his Biology of the Seasons, and that teachers of Zoology may recommend it to their students as an introduction to the study of some of the problems for the discussion of which our crowded curricula leave little time. Book The Nature Study Course

Download or read book The Nature Study Course written by John Dearness and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nature Study Course: With Suggestions for Teaching It, Based on Notes of Lectures to Teachers-in-Training When the teachers began to teach the part of the new Course of Study relating to nature work, judging by the questions asked by Normal School students and numerous correspondents, many of them were confronted by difficulties over which the books available did not help them. An engagement to answer such questions, and to offer hints and suggestions on the Nature Study part of the Course has drawn forth the following pages. Direct the children how and where to collect the material, guide their observations and reasoning upon what they bring, and teach them the arts of expressing the steps and results of their investigation. This general direction seems as simple as it is comprehensive; but in its application almost as many different problems arise as there are different lessons. No one can anticipate all these problems, but solutions of many of them are herein proposed. The Nature Study teacher well knows the value of comparison. Any one using the course of study prescribed for his own province will derive much benefit from comparing it in detail and in entirety with the course adopted in another province. This little book may, therefore, prove as helpful to teachers outside of the Provinces whose regulations are quoted as to those serving within their boundaries. Book The Book of Nature Study Vol 3 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Book of Nature Study Vol 3 Classic Reprint written by John Bretland Farmer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-04 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Nature Study, Vol. 3 It will be clear from what has been said that the study Of plant life is abundantly fascinating. Every one with even a small garden can watch the spread Of a given plant, or the adapta tion Of structure, or the growth Of seedlings. Even without a garden a great deal can be done with window boxes, with seeds in saucers, or in glass jam jars. The habit Of Observing Nature brings with it its own delight, and, once begun, is not likely to be given up but the importance Of a real, first-hand knowledge Of Nature cannot be exaggerated in the case Of those engaged in what is popularly called Nature Study. The main Object Of Nature Study should be to develop the mental faculties Of Observation and reasoning. This cannot be done satisfactorily except by those teachers who are always finding out things for themselves, and constantly experimenting in one way or another, either repeating the experiments Of others, or, still better, devising new ones, however small, for themselves. For this reason, constant reference will be made in this section to new work both in America and in Europe, and a bibliography will be given, in which the more recent botanical literature will be mentioned. Laboratory experiments are valuable, and in towns may be the only ones possible, but those who live in the country should be content with nothing -less than Observing Nature accurately and, like Gilbert White Of Selborne, sympathetic ally and reverently.
