Download or read book Expecting Adam written by Martha Beck and published by Harmony. This book was released on 2011-08-02 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A candid and moving memoir of how one woman’s pregnancy forced her to confront her definition of how to live a successful life “Slyly ironic, frequently hilarious, [Martha] Beck’s memoir charts the journey from being smart to becoming wise.”—Time This edition includes a new afterword about Adam. From the moment Martha and her husband, John, accidentally conceived their second child, all hell broke loose. They were a couple obsessed with success. After years of matching IQs and test scores with less driven peers, they had two Harvard degrees apiece and were gunning for more. They’d plotted out a future in the most vaunted ivory tower of academe. But when their unborn son, Adam, was diagnosed with Down syndrome, doctors, advisers, and friends in the Harvard community warned them that if they decided to keep the baby, they would lose all hope of achieving their carefully crafted goals. Fortunately, that’s exactly what happened. By the time Adam was born, Martha and John were propelled into a world in which they were forced to redefine everything of value to them, put all their faith in miracles, and trust that they could fly without a net. And it worked. Expecting Adam captures the abject terror and exhilarating freedom of facing impending parenthood, being forced to question one’s deepest beliefs, and rewriting life’s rules.

Download or read book The Boys and Their Baby written by Larry Wolff and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2003-12-31 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The boys" are Adam and Huck, former college roommates. A decade out of college and just as long out of touch with each other, they are reunited when Adam arrives to share Huck's apartment on Russian Hill in San Francisco. "Their baby" is Christopher, Huck's entrancing almost-one-year-old son, whose mother is nowhere in evidence and, at first, much to Adam's befuddlement, mysteriously unmentioned. The story centers on Adam as he sets out to construct a life for himself in the unfamiliar city. He assumes his new job as an English teacher at a fancy private school, where one of his students develops an obsessive (and disturbing) interest in him. Adam coasts into simultaneous affairs with two women: one of them a striking, locally celebrated chanteuse, and the other a physics teacher with a distinctive footwear fetish. As the city and its denizens-women and men, gay and straight, young and old-make Adam welcome in various and telling ways...as he approaches a certain peace with his past (through letters to and from his riotously enraged ex-girlfriend and his hugely intimidating mother)...as living with the baby and the baby's father exerts a profound influence on Adam...as the story of the baby's missing mother dramatically unfolds...we watch Adam come to surprising terms with his life and himself. The Boys and Their Baby is a wonderfully entertaining novel of domestic and sexual manners, 1980s San Francisco-style, marking the debut of splendidly gifted novelist Larry Wolff.

Utterly annoyed, Carter feels like the only girl not buying what Hollywood's selling. Then Carter gets an offer she can't refuse: play the part of Adam's girlfriend while he's in Little, to improve his public image, and take home a hefty paycheck, which her family desperately needs. So instead of a summer hanging out with friends and working, Carter begrudgingly poses for the tabloids but soon finds that Adam isn't who she thought. Worse yet, she might actually be falling for him. As they grow closer, their relationship walks a blurry line between what's real and what's fake; and Carter must open her eyes to the scariest of unexplored worlds - her future. Download or read book The Acquisition of Scrambling and Cliticization written by S.M. Powers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-05-31 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of papers investigates two specific linguistic phenomena from the point of view of first- and second-language acquisition. While observations on the acquisition of scrambling or pronominal clitics can be found in the literature, up until the recent past they were sparse and often buried in other issues. This volume fills a long-existing gap in providing a collection of articles which focus on language acquisition but at the same time address the overarching syntactic issues involved (for example, the X-bar status of clitics, base-generation vs. movement accounts of scrambling). This volume contains an overview of L1 (and, in one case, L2) acquisition data from a number of different languages including Bernese, Swiss, German, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Swedish, as well as from several theoretical points of view with these two clause-internal processes at its center. These language acquisition data are considered to be crucial in the validation of analyses of these specific linguistic phenomena in adult grammars. The contributions in this volume include the earliest thoughts in this vein and, for this reason, should be viewed as a starting point for discussions within theoretical linguistics and language acquisition alike.

Download or read book Adam s Choice written by Roy Barrington and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2008-12-04 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thousands of babies are born every day, arriving crying and wailing in a world that greets them with jubilation and happiness. Every child reinforces the future, is born innocent and brings great joy to its parents, joy that is unknown to the women whose future is blighted by a form of infertility that cannot be cured by the best medical care. Adams Choice reveals that a couples pain and agony of mind can be removed by the simple expedient of making the mans body suitable to provide the nourishing environment a baby needs. There are risks, maybe a 6-1 chance of non survival for the man because of infection but many men who love their woman say they want to do it and make their joint lives complete. Is not adoption a better way? Yes, maybe, but most couples want their own child and not the complications that too often arise when a third party is involved. In todays highly charged world of clinical research, of cloning and the numerous experimentation in the field of human fertilisation and InvitroFertilisation, doctors have all the necessary tools in their hands. They are being held back from making that one big step by fear, the fear of public disapproval and, maybe the anguish of those who see babies as purely womens work, and would consider male intervention a heinous act and one designed to demean them. It is, of course, nothing of the sort. In the years ahead, the act of chemically turning a man into a women with the use of hormonal injections, may become as celebrated as the first arrival of The Pill, an event that gave freedom, of a kind, to women. Nobody wants a Frankenstein sort of baby laboratory but we all want to help those women whose strongest, most important human emotion and desire, the wish to have a baby, is too often being cruelly thwarted. After all, nothing is more precious in our society than a baby, especially our own baby.
