Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Stuart Blackie was one of the most impressive and influential figures of nineteenth-century Scotland, as well as one of the most striking and flamboyant. As an intellectual he translated Goethe's Faust and brought first-hand knowledge of German philosophy to Scotland as a means of keeping the Enlightenment tradition alive. As first Professor of Humanity at Aberdeen from 1839 to 1852 and then as Professor of Greek at Edinburgh until 1882, he played a, perhaps the, central role in modernising the Scottish university curriculum, removing the dead hand of theological orthodoxy, raising standards (and the entry age), introducing tutorial teaching and establishing new chairs (including the Edinburgh chair of Celtic). His role in the reform of secondary school teaching was equally central. But Blackie was also a great 'public man', corresponding with great and famous throughout Great Britain and Europe, from Goethe and Carlyle to Ruskin and Gladstone, and filling the pages of newspapers and journals with writings on the major issues of the day. For the last thirty years of his life he became closely involved in issues of Scottish nationalism and home rule, and as champion of the crofters is largely responsible for their contemporary survival and unique status. Despite the existence of a rich archive of his papers and letters, there has been only one book devoted to his life: The Life of Professor John Stuart Blackie, the most distinguished Scotsman of the day, edited by J. G. Duncan and published in 1895.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last two decades, numerous studies have been devoted to the Victorian fascination with King Arthur, however . the figure of King Alfred has received almost no attention. For much of the nineteenth century, Alfred was as important as Arthur in the British popular imagination. A pervasive cult of the king developed which included the erection of at least four public statues, the completion of more than twenty-five paintings, and the publication of over a hundred texts, by authors ranging from Wordsworth to minor women writers. By 1852, J.A. Froude could describe Alfred’s life as ‘the favourite story in English nurseries’; in 1901, a national holiday marked the thousandth anniversary of his death, organised by a committee including Edward Burne Jones, Arthur Conan Doyle and Thomas Hughes. England’s darling sets out to answer the questions that must arise in the face of such nineteenth-century enthusiasm for a long-dead king. It addresses a genuine gap in the literature on Victorian medievalism in particular and cultural history in general and argues that knowledge of the cult of Alfred is crucial to understanding the Victorian cultural map. The book examines the ways in which Alfred was rewritten by nineteenth-century authors and artists, and asks how beliefs about the Saxon king’s reign and achievements related to nineteenth-century ideals about leadership, law, religion, commerce, education and the Empire. The book concludes by addressing the most interesting enigma in Alfred’s reception history: why is the king no longer ‘England’s darling’? A fascinating study that will be enjoyed by scholars of history, cultural history, literature and art history.

Book John Davidson First of the Moderns

Download or read book John Davidson First of the Moderns written by John Sloan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As long ago as 1917, Virginia Woolf expressed surprise that anyone as good as John Davidson should 'be so little famous'. Now, at last, criticism has established Davidson as a key figure in the emergence of literary modernism, as the best Scottish poet between Robert Burns and Hugh MacDiarmid, and as an important influence on the younger poets of his day, most notably T. S. Eliot. In this, the first biography of Davidson for more than thirty years, John Sloan presents a wealth of new information about Davidson's life, including his time in London, and the ties which connect him to Sherard's circle, to Wilde, Yeats, and the Rhymers' Club. John Davidson, First of the Moderns explores Davidson's career in London as a penniless author, struggling to reconcile the freedom to experience demanded by the avant-garde artist in the age of the Decadence with the obligations of family, and to combine his ambition for a many-sided reputation as a poet, novelist, and playwright with his need to survive in the commercial rough and tumble of Fleet Street, the theatre, and Paternoster Row. The conditions of authorship, the literary scandals and rows of Fleet Street, and the revelations of the characters involved here provide the literary background to the life of John Davidson. The picture that emerges is not simply of a late Victorian rebel, but of a proto-Modernist who from his recovery from a breakdown in 1896 to his strange disappearance and death in 1909, pioneered a new idiom and subject matter for twentieth-century verse.
