Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Son's Tribute I was impressed with his genial, social nature on my first attendance at a class recitation. I had studied the languages at home during the intervals of farm work and was not very well qualified to enter a class commencing reading Livy. But that was my classification and I entered the class of twelve students all of whom had studied Latin for two or three years. Our first lesson was, of course, the preface of the history, a page in length. I spent a day and night on its translation and construed only two or three sentences so as to be at all satisfactory. I entered the class greatly depressed and with the determination to request the Professor to transfer me to a. Less advanced class. Book Letters to My Son Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Letters to My Son Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by William Gibson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters to My Son, Vol. 1 MY dear bill: During the years you were in school at Charterhouse we kept up a regular and chummy correspondence. About the time you came home to Pittsburgh and entered the Institute of Technology, I happened to be called to Cincinnati to pay my last tribute of respect to an old friend, Mr. W. J. Murphy, vice-president of the Cincinnati, New Orleans and Texas Pacific Railway. On my arrival at Cincinnati almost the first indi vidual to be encountered was Professor F. Paul Ander son, who had come there from Kentucky on the same sad errand which brought me from Pennsylvania. Anderson and I were old and intimate friends, and we went to the funeral together and sat in the same pew. The Reverend Father conducting the service had been devotedly attached to Mr. Murphy who during his life was an excellent and deeply religious man, and had been active in church and charitable work. In delivering the funeral oration the reverend gentleman was greatly agitated, and got quite mixed up in his eulogy. As a matter of fact it had neither beginning nor ending, and the poor man's English was past human understanding. Book The Classics in Modernist Translation

Download or read book The Classics in Modernist Translation written by Lynn Kozak and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-02-07 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume sheds new light on a wealth of early 20th-century engagement with literature of Graeco-Roman antiquity that significantly shaped the work of anglophone literary modernism. The essays spotlight 'translation,' a concept the modernists themselves used to reckon with the Classics and to denote a range of different kinds of reception – from more literal to more liberal translation work, as well as forms of what contemporary reception studies would term 'adaptation', 'refiguration' and 'intervention.' As the volume's essays reveal, modernist 'translations' of Classical texts crucially informed the innovations of many modernists and often themselves constituted modernist literary projects. Thus the volume responds to gaps in both Classical reception and Modernist studies: essays treat a comparatively understudied area in Classical reception by reviving work in a subfield of Modernist studies relatively inactive in recent decades but enjoying renewed attention through the recent work of contributors to this volume. The volume's essays address work significantly informed by Classical materials, including Homer, Sophocles, Euripides, Sappho, Ovid, and Propertius, and approach a range of modernist writers: Pound and H.D., among the modernists best known for work engaging the Classics, as well as Cummings, Eliot, Joyce, Laura Riding, and Yeats.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Son of Old Harry a Novel Other than what you are I repeated to myself, as I heard the firm, elastic steps echoing along the corridor of the great hotel outside my room when the physician went away. What am I It did not need knowledge such as his to determine. Half dead and half alive! This body which has served me so well at need, and which, whatever else I may have done, I have never abused, has been cut in twain. One-half has already passed beyond the realm of consciousness. The inert limbs chain me to the couch. The nerves which traverse the yet unshrunken tissues, bring only dim, vague mes sages of need - dull, prickling appeals for aid. I live, but it is only a half-life. The brain is alert the soul alive the body slipping helplessly and hopelessly into the tomb. Book A Tribute to the Life and Character of Jonas Chickering Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Tribute to the Life and Character of Jonas Chickering The following "Tribute" to the memory of your excellent Father, I respectfully dedicate to you. If it be not worthy of the subject, its sincerity must in some measure, at least, atone for its defects. My acquaintance with him commenced many years ago, when, in your early days, he consigned the education of his two elder sons to my care. Called as I was, shortly afterwards, to a different field of labor, my interest in him and in you has never ceased; and while I rejoiced at his well earned prosperity, I could not feel a less degree of joy in seeing the early promise of the sons ripening into a character worthy of the father. Should I fail in my attempt to do justice to his memory, I trust that my endeavor to make his successors better known will not be wholly in vain. Book The Widow s Sons Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Widow s Sons Classic Reprint written by Jane Alice Sargent and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Widow's Sons J ack honest was only eight years of age when his father died. Jack Honest cries the young reader, 'what - was the boy's name Honest?' It was Honest is a surname, though rather an uncommon one. We often wonder how people come by some of the names they have. We are not surprised to hear of Smiths, and Carpenters, and Painters, and Bakers, and Butchers, because such surnames were no doubt given to people who followed those trades. Well, Honest was most likely given to one of our hero's great-grandfathers, who was distinguished for the Virtue of Honesty. That is the only way by which we can solve the mystery of how he came by his name. Jack's father and mother were poor, but they had brought him up very creditably. They had sent him to school, and he had never played in the streets with idle or vicious children, which is the ruin of many boys. He had one or two companions of his own age, but they were such as his parents approved of. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
