Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-five years ago, I began keeping a daily Journal. Recovering from a divorce that left me in total consternation, I realized I needed to make some changes in my life. I was determined to help myself overcome the sadness and fears that had accompanied the divorce, and with some help, realized I needed to make significant changes in my priorities and behaviors. To monitor the progress of these changes, my daily journal was a contemplation of each day's activities. I paid attention to what I was doing each day, and why I was doing it (some of the time). These 25 years of journals are full of less than earth-shattering details, but they helped me become a less reactive and a more reflective man. Keeping the journal has been beneficial, but has often made me wish I had started the effort earlier, particularly during the most formative period of my life, my time as a soldier. Accordingly, this book began to take shape; A Soldier's Journal.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Soldier's DiaryThese are not the words of a conscientious objector, nor Of a neurasthenic, introspective man. They are written by a keen, healthy minded, sport-loving, young Englishman, who passed through the war at the front, did his duty nobly, and behaved with great gallantry. He describes in vivid, clear language, just what he saw, he does not cover up the horrors with fine phrases, but just sets them down in their place alongside the stories of devotion and sacrifice, which make up the high lights in the picture.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Friars Soldiers and Reformers

Download or read book Friars Soldiers and Reformers written by John L. Kessell and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Franciscan mission San José de Tumacácori and the perennially undermanned presidio Tubac become John L. Kessell's windows on the Arizona–Sonora frontier in this colorful documentary history. His fascinating view extends from the Jesuit expulsion to the coming of the U.S. Army. Kessell provides exciting accounts of the explorations of Francisco Garcés, de Anza's expeditions, and the Yuma massacre. Drawing from widely scattered archival materials, he vividly describes the epic struggle between Bishop Reyes and Father President Barbastro, the missionary scandals of 1815–18, and the bloody victory of Mexican civilian volunteers over Apaches in Arivaipa Canyon in 1832. Numerous missionaries, presidials, and bureaucrats—nameless in histories until now—emerge as living, swearing, praying, individuals. This authoritative chronicle offers an engrossing picture of the continually threatened mission frontier. Reformers championing civil rights for mission Indians time and again challenged the friars' "tight-fisted paternalistic control" over their wards. Expansionists repeatedly saw their plans dashed by Indian raids, uncooperative military officials, or lack of financial support. Friars, Soldiers, and Reformers brings into sharp focus the long, blurry period between Jesuit Sonora and Territorial Arizona.

Book Progress in Behavior Modification

Download or read book Progress in Behavior Modification written by Michel Hersen and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in Behavior Modification, Volume 1 reviews advances in the understanding of behavior modification, with emphasis on theoretical underpinnings, research findings and methodologies, and assessment techniques. Control of psychophysiological processes and ethical issues in behavioral control are considered, along with the effects of social influences on behavior and the contribution of behavior therapy to the treatment of physical illness. Comprised of eight chapters, this volume begins with a discussion on the evolution of behavior modification, with particular reference to its application as a methodological approach to the study and treatment of psychological disorders. The next chapter offers an interpersonal analysis of depression from theoretical, research, and therapeutic standpoints, followed by an analysis of developments in the behavioral treatment of phobic and obsessive-compulsive disorders. The ethical and legal ramifications of behavior therapy are also evaluated, paying attention to court decisions, the issue of patients' rights, and the efficacy of the behavioral approach compared to other systems of treatment. The remaining chapters focus on the contribution of behavior modification to the field of juvenile delinquency; advances in token economy research; individual behavior therapy; and the complementary roles of drugs and behavior modification. This book should be of interest to theoreticians, researchers, or practitioners in the fields of psychiatry, psychology, and behavior therapy as well as social work, speech therapy, education, and rehabilitation.
