By chance, he comes across a letter from WWI - a German father writes about his grief of losing a son to war - buried by his three comrades near a small French village. The letter resonates with Conrad and he commits to researching its backstory. Months later, Conrad makes contact with the fallen soldier's family. He falls deeper into their history and other untold stories from this era, including the fate of young Tasmanian soldiers who also fought on the Western Front. A Soldier's Quartet is inspired by true events, a story of perseverance and happenstance that transcends time and reaches across continents. It presents the human faces behind uniforms and battle plans, conveys love and hope set against various landscapes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a post-9/11 world, an ultra-secret team of military specialists fights back, in four novels from the bestselling author of the Wingman series. Assembled by a mysterious superspy and operating without the political or bureaucratic oversight that can hamstring even the bravest fighting forces, the Superhawks are America’s ruthless answer to 9/11. An ultra-elite force operating on the edges, they are the world’s best sharpshooters, spies, demolition men, pilots, brawlers, and soldiers—and they all have a personal motive for revenge. In Strike Force Alpha, the Superhawks’ mission is to kill Osama bin Laden. Hidden aboard the Ocean Voyager, this elite unit of assault troops carries out brazen, daring raids all over the Persian Gulf as it seeks its number one target: al-Qaeda’s master mission planner. Strike Force Bravo begins with the Superhawks taking on a terrorist cell that’s captured Singapore’s Tonka Tower Hotel. But al-Qaeda is hatching a new plot involving Stinger missiles. Can the Superhawks stop it in time? Or will the American military bureaucracy trip itself up before they even have a chance? In Strike Force Charlie, dozens of al-Qaeda terrorists preparing to unleash attacks from the heart of America sneak into the United States under paper-thin disguises. The Superhawks team up with a group of civilians to protect the country, save thousands of lives, and purge the government of high-level traitors.. And in Strike Force Delta, a supersquad from America’s premier special ops unit, Delta Force, comes under attack in West Africa. Though they take out over fifty terrorists, the secret Delta Thunder team is captured. It’s up to the Superhawks to invade the radicals’ fortress, save the unit’s men, and flatline the “crown prince” of terrorism before he can execute the hostages on live TV.

Book Composing the Modern Subject Four String Quartets by Dmitri Shostakovich

Download or read book Composing the Modern Subject Four String Quartets by Dmitri Shostakovich written by Sarah Reichardt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of Solomon Volkov's disputed memoirs of Dmitri Shostakovich, the composer and his music has been subject to heated debate concerning how the musical meaning of his works can be understood in relationship to the composer's life within the Soviet State. While much ink has been spilled, very little work has attempted to define how Shostakovich's music has remained so arresting not only to those within the Soviet culture, but also to Western audiences - even though such audiences are often largely ignorant of the compositional context or even the biography of the composer. This book offers a useful corrective: setting aside biographically grounded and traditional analytical modes of explication, Reichardt uncovers and explores the musical ambiguities of four of the composer‘s middle string quartets, especially those ambiguities located in moments of rupture within the musical structure. The music is constantly collapsing, reversing, inverting and denying its own structural imperatives. Reichardt argues that such confrontation of the musical language with itself, though perhaps interpretable as Shostakovich's own unique version of double-speak, also poignantly articulates the fractured state of a more general form of modern subjectivity. Reichardt employs the framework of Lacanian psychoanalysis to offer a cogent explanation of this connection between disruptive musical process and modern subjectivity. The ruptures of Shostakovich's music become symptoms of the pathologies at the core of modern subjectivity. These symptoms, in turn, relate to the Lacanian concept of the real, which is the empty kernel around which the modern subject constructs reality. This framework proves invaluable in developing a powerful, original hermeneutic understanding of the music. Read through the lens of the real, the riddles written into the quartets reveal the arbitrary and contingent state of the musical subject's constructed reality, reflecting pathologies ende
