Book Protecting Soldiers and Mothers

Download or read book Protecting Soldiers and Mothers written by Theda Skocpol and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 737 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a commonplace that the United States lagged behind the countries of Western Europe in developing modern social policies. But, as Theda Skocpol shows in this startlingly new historical analysis, the United States actually pioneered generous social spending for many of its elderly, disabled, and dependent citizens. During the late nineteenth century, competitive party politics in American democracy led to the rapid expansion of benefits for Union Civil War veterans and their families. Some Americans hoped to expand veterans' benefits into pensions for all of the needy elderly and social insurance for workingmen and their families. But such hopes went against the logic of political reform in the Progressive Era. Generous social spending faded along with the Civil War generation. Instead, the nation nearly became a unique maternalist welfare state as the federal government and more than forty states enacted social spending, labor regulations, and health education programs to assist American mothers and children. Remarkably, as Skocpol shows, many of these policies were enacted even before American women were granted the right to vote. Banned from electoral politics, they turned their energies to creating huge, nation-spanning federations of local women's clubs, which collaborated with reform-minded professional women to spur legislative action across the country. Blending original historical research with political analysis, Skocpol shows how governmental institutions, electoral rules, political parties, and earlier public policies combined to determine both the opportunities and the limits within which social policies were devised and changed by reformers and politically active social groups over the course of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. By examining afresh the institutional, cultural, and organizational forces that have shaped U.S. social policies in the past, Protecting Soldiers and Mothers challenges us to think in new ways about what might be possible in the American future.

Book Soldier s Heart

Download or read book Soldier s Heart written by Carol Tyler and published by Fantagraphics Books. This book was released on 2015-10-23 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home and Art Spiegelman’s Maus comes cartoonist Carol Tyler’s multigenerational graphic memoir, You’ll Never Know. The author chronicles her fraught relationship with her father, Charles, a WWII veteran, and how the war affected their lives through both childhood and adulthood. You’ll Never Know is also a tribute to servicemen and women, dramatizing the trauma of the war on the Greatest Generation and those who followed. Tyler’s ink and watercolor narrative is in turns sprawling and gimlet-eyed: compassionate and enraged. Her father’s memories are woven into her own, which span her Catholic, Midwestern childhood; her troubled marriage; her daughter’s struggles; and her efforts to care for her aging parents. Even though Tyler’s work has an accessible, homemade feel (the organizing metaphor of the book is a photo album with “snapshots” of Tyler family life), You’ll Never Know is a sophisticated graphic work about war, love, and loss.

Book From a Soldier s Journal 1861 64 Expanded Annotated

Download or read book From a Soldier s Journal 1861 64 Expanded Annotated written by Albert O. Marshall and published by BIG BYTE BOOKS. This book was released on 2016-11-28 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In all of the dusty volumes of Civil War memoirs that no one reads anymore, once in a while we come across one such as this. Written by a man with literary aspirations from a regiment of like-minded soldiers, Albert Marshall’s use of the pen produced more eloquence than did that of many of his contemporaries. He left one of the most compelling accounts of the siege of Vicksburg from a private soldier's point of view. He also wrote of service in Texas, which is rare among Civil War memoirs. Eloquent, funny, poignant, and immensely satisfying, Marshall's memoir from his journal is one of the best of the genre. Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers, tablets, and smartphones. Book A Soldiers Journal 1959 1969

Download or read book A Soldiers Journal 1959 1969 written by George W. Davenport Jr and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2019-07-29 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-five years ago, I began keeping a daily Journal. Recovering from a divorce that left me in total consternation, I realized I needed to make some changes in my life. I was determined to help myself overcome the sadness and fears that had accompanied the divorce, and with some help, realized I needed to make significant changes in my priorities and behaviors. To monitor the progress of these changes, my daily journal was a contemplation of each day’s activities. I paid attention to what I was doing each day, and why I was doing it (some of the time). These 25 years of journals are full of less than earth-shattering details, but they helped me become a less reactive and a more reflective man. Keeping the journal has been beneficial, but has often made me wish I had started the effort earlier, particularly during the most formative period of my life, my time as a soldier. Accordingly, this book began to take shape; A Soldier’s Journal.
