Book excerpt: Looking back on the past years of my military career only makes me smile. It’s been a long, hard, rewarding experience. In my own opinion, I believe that everyone should serve for a few years out of his or her lifetime because the U.S. Army has been my mentor and I think that it could be a great mentor for someone else as well. It’s taught me how to live and live the right way. The seven Army values have been introduced to me early on and I take pride in abiding by them every day. Those seven values are: Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage. This is the basic make- up of a Soldier and Soldier is what I am.

Book New Wars and New Soldiers

Download or read book New Wars and New Soldiers written by Asst Prof Jessica Wolfendale and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-03-28 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern conflicts now bear little relation to traditional wars between states. The threat of terrorism, the creation of new military technologies, the rise of private military companies, and the increasing involvement of the military in counter-terrorism and humanitarian operations all pose challenges to traditional ideas about the ethics of war, the relevance of current international law governing armed conflict, and Just War theory. How, then, should military ethics approach these new forms of conflict? Modern military ethics now includes work from disciplines as diverse as philosophy, history, sociology, international relations, politics, and psychology. This diversity of approaches suggests that the approach to contemporary military ethics that is best suited to understanding the wars of today is a broad multidisciplinary vision. By bringing together contributors from philosophy, international relations, security studies, and strategic studies, this volume offers just such an interdisciplinary analysis. The chapters in this volume explore the ethical issues posed by recent developments in both the nature and conduct of war, as well as focusing on the role and needs of modern military personnel. This comprehensive approach allows the reader to see the broad scope of modern military ethics, and to understand the numerous questions about modern conflict that require critical scrutiny. Aimed at both military and academic audiences, this volume will be of significant interest to researchers and students in philosophy, sociology, military and strategic studies, international relations, politics, and security studies.

Book International Law and Child Soldiers

Download or read book International Law and Child Soldiers written by Gus Waschefort and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-12-04 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book commences with an analysis of the current state of child soldiering internationally. Thereafter the proscriptive content of contemporary norms on the prohibition of the use and recruitment of child soldiers is evaluated, so as to determine whether these norms are capable of better enforcement. An 'issues-based' approach is adopted, in terms of which no specific regime of law, such as international humanitarian law (IHL), is deemed dominant. Instead, universal and regional human rights law, international criminal law and IHL are assessed cumulatively, so as to create a mutually reinforcing web of protection. Ultimately, it is argued that the effective implementation of child soldier prohibitive norms does not require major changes to any entity or functionary engaged in such prevention; rather, it requires the constant reassessment and refinement of all such entities and functionaries, and here, some changes are suggested. International judicial, quasi-judicial and non-judicial entities and functionaries most relevant to child soldier prevention are critically assessed. Ultimately the conclusions reached are assessed in light of a case study on the use and recruitment of child soldiers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Book excerpt: Winner of the National Jewish Book Award Winner of the Washington Institute Book Prize One of the Best Books of the Year St. Louis Post-Dispatch * Kirkus Reviews In this groundbreaking work, Bruce Hoffman—America’s leading expert on terrorism—brilliantly re-creates the crucial thirty-year period that led to the birth of Israel. Drawing on previously untapped archival resources in London, Washington, D.C., and Jerusalem, Anonymous Soldiers shows how the efforts of two militant Zionist groups brought about the end of British rule in the Middle East. Hoffman shines new light on the bombing of the King David Hotel, the assassination of Lord Moyne in Cairo, the leadership of Menachem Begin, the life and death of Abraham Stern, and much else. Above all, he shows exactly how the underdog “anonymous soldiers” of Irgun and Lehi defeated the British and set in motion the chain of events that resulted in the creation of the formidable nation-state of Israel. One of the most detailed and sustained accounts of a terrorist and counterterrorist campaign ever written, Hoffman has crafted the definitive account of the struggle for Israel—and an impressive investigation of the efficacy of guerilla tactics. Anonymous Soldiers is essential to anyone wishing to understand the current situation in the Middle East.

Book Super Soldiers

Download or read book Super Soldiers written by Jai Galliott and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spartan City State produced what is probably one of the most iconic and ruthless military forces in recorded history. They believed that military training and education began at birth. Post-World War II saw a shift to army tanks, fighter jets and missiles that would go on to fight the next huge battle in Northern Europe. Today, with the advent of unmanned systems, our hopes are attached to the idea that we can fight our battles with soldiers pressing buttons in distant command centres. However, soldiers must now be highly trained, super strong and have the intelligence and mental capacity to handle the highly complex and dynamic military operating environment. It is only now as we progress into the twenty-first century that we are getting closer to realising the Spartan ideal and creating a soldier that can endure more than ever before. This book provides the first comprehensive and unifying analysis of the moral, legal and social questions concerning military human enhancement, with a view toward developing guidance and policy that may influence real-world decision making.
