Book A Soldier Of France To His Mother Letters From The Trenches On The Western Front

Download or read book A Soldier Of France To His Mother Letters From The Trenches On The Western Front written by Eugène-Emmanuel Lemercier and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of a renowned French painter who volunteered for the Army during the First World War paints a vivid picture of the horror at the front in his letters home written before his death in 1915. “A Bestseller, remarkable for the horrors of the western front conveyed in a spirit of self-sacrifice and filial love.”- A Companion to World War One ed. John Horne, Blackwell Publishing, 2012 “THE following letters were written by a young French painter who was at the front until the beginning of April, 1915, when he “disappeared” in one of the combats in the Argonne region of France. “Should he be spoken of in the present or in the past?” asks M. André Chevrillon , a friend of the soldier’s family, in the preface to the French edition of this book. “Since the day when his mother and grandmother received from him his last communication, a post card bespattered with mud which announced the attack in which he fell, what a tragic silence for these two women who, during eight months, had lived only with these letters, which came almost daily. In his studio, among the pictures in which this young man had fixed his dreams and his visions of an artist, I have seen, piously arranged on a table, all the little square white sheets of this correspondence. What a speechless presence! I did not know then what a soul was there transcribed in these messages to the family hearth - a fully formed soul, which, if it had lived, I feel sure would have spread its fame and its influence far beyond this little home circle and radiated a-wide among the hearts of men.””

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Soldier of France to His Mother: Letters From the Trenches on the Western Front Love is one of the words which return the most often in this correspondence - love of the fields and the plains, of the trees and the stars, of the little animals of the meadows, in a word, of all things, animate and inanimate, of sky and earth; love, too, of the living and the dead, whether friend or foe. Book A Soldier Unafraid Letters From The Trenches On The Alsatian Front

Download or read book A Soldier Unafraid Letters From The Trenches On The Alsatian Front written by Captain André Cornet-Auquier and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-13 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly 1.7 million French soldiers died in the First World War fighting for their homeland against the invading German Armies; it is difficult to comprehend that hecatomb. It is indeed difficult to comprehend that many lost lives, perhaps the only way to do so is in representative figures such as the Unknown Soldier or by the many memoirs and diaries that have been left behind. One such diary is that of Captain André Cornet-Auquier, a passionate but moral man, well-known for his leadership skills in and bravery on the battlefield. The conditions in which he served on the Alsace front were always tough, being often within forty-five yards of the enemy’s front lines, his faith in his cause and God sustained him even in the most trying situations. Despite being in the front line fighting for so long his luck ran out in February 1916, mortally wounded by a shell splinter. A symbol of French stoicism and courage he died beloved by his men, one of his sergeants said “It is not a spectacle often witnessed, — that of soldiers, accustomed to face death, weeping like children as they stood round his bier.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Soldier's Mother in France On the lapel of my coat I wear a little pin, a pin with a single star, ruby red on a bar of white. My only son is a member of the American Expeditionary Force in France. More than a million American women wear pins like mine. Some have two stars, three, even four, and every one covers a heart heavy with anxiety and foreboding. That little service pin which mothers wear, fathers, too; sisters, sweethearts, wives, is a symbol of sacrifice. It should be something more than that My star has come to mean love of country far surpassing the mild patriotism of other days. It means confidence and courage for whatever in these tragic times I shall need courage. It means pride in the young manhood of America and hope unbounded for the future of America, which lies in their hands. Before I went to France I wore my service pin for one soldier - my son. Book Flowers from No Man s Land

Download or read book Flowers from No Man s Land written by Aleeta Renée Jones and published by . This book was released on 2015-02-24 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sometimes it is the stark, matter-of-fact letters from uprooted soldiers home that best capture the mood of the times. Such is the case with Alfred Earl Jones, a private from rural California who fought in World War I, whose letters provide personal drama and are historically informative." - Peter Krass, author of Portrait of War: The U.S. Army's First Combat Artists and the Doughboys' Experience in WWI "This marvelously annotated collection of letters transports us back to the training camps, high seas, and battlefields; recounting the novelty, boredom and terror that so many young American men experienced going to war in 1917-18. These citizen-soldiers remained civilians at heart, and these letters attest to the importance of family in keeping men going at the front - offering an invaluable lesson for Americans today." - Jennifer D. Keene, author of Doughboys, the Great War and the Remaking of America (2001).

Book The Soldier Kings of France

Download or read book The Soldier Kings of France written by Philip J Potter and published by Pen and Sword History. This book was released on 2024-07-30 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Soldier Kings of France explores the reigns of eight monarchs, from King Charles II to Napoleon Bonaparte, tracing their roles in expanding French power and shaping European history. In early October 1795, Napoleon Bonaparte led the governing Directory’s army against the rioting royalists in Paris (who were rebelling to restore the monarchy), crushing their campaign and beginning his rise to supremacy and greatness. Napoleon is one of the eight sovereigns discussed in The Soldier Kings of France, who brought glory, power and territorial expansion to France, while altering the course of European history. The work begins in the ninth century with King Charles II’s seizure of the French crown and concludes in the nineteenth century with Napoleon’s rise and fall. In the book, the reign of Philip II and his participation in the Third Crusade to the Holy Land is the second monarch reviewed, followed by Louis XI, who ended the Hundred Year War with the English and Louis XII’s rule is next, which fought to expand French territorial holdings into the Lombardy region of Italy. The fifth king surveyed is Francis I and his enlargement of French lands into Italy, while the sixth king is Henry IV, whose conversion to the Catholic faith ended thirty years of French religious wars and established a stable and popular regime. The kingship of Louis XIV is the book’s seventh overlord, whose rule was occupied with wars to expand his territories and the building of France into the center of European culture, arts, architecture and music during the Baroque era, while presiding over a magnificent court at the Versailles Palace. The final sovereign lord discussed is Napoleon Bonaparte, who led his armies to victory, establishing French dominance across Europe until his defeats at Leipzig and Waterloo and his forced exile to the remote and desolate island of Elba in the south Atlantic Ocean.

Book Soldier and Peasant in French Popular Culture 1766 1870

Download or read book Soldier and Peasant in French Popular Culture 1766 1870 written by David M. Hopkin and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2003 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Concentrating on the militarised borderlands of eastern France, this book examines the disjuncture between the patriotic expectations of elites and the sentiments expressed in folksongs, folktales and popular imagery, in which issues of sexuality, violence and separation took far greater prominence. Hopkin follows the soldier through his life-cycle, from greenhorn recruit to grizzled veteran, to show how the peasant conscript was separated from his previous life and re-educated in military mores (and the response that this transformation elicited from his family and community)."--BOOK JACKET.
