Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last twenty years have seen a rise in the production, circulation, and criticism of new forms of socially engaged art aimed at achieving social justice and economic equality. In Wages Against Artwork Leigh Claire La Berge shows how socially engaged art responds to and critiques what she calls decommodified labor—the slow diminishment of wages alongside an increase in the demands of work. Outlining the ways in which socially engaged artists relate to work, labor, and wages, La Berge examines how artists and organizers create institutions to address their own and others' financial precarity; why the increasing role of animals and children in contemporary art points to the turn away from paid labor; and how the expansion of MFA programs and student debt helps create the conditions for decommodified labor. In showing how socially engaged art operates within and against the need to be paid for work, La Berge offers a new theorization of the relationship between art and contemporary capitalism.

Book Hard Knocks Soft Spots

Download or read book Hard Knocks Soft Spots written by Paddy Doherty and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-05-10 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'I fight hard and love strong. I'm a traveller.' Paddy Doherty loves his life as an Irish traveller, but as a child he felt like an outsider. He was different to his siblings. On the rare occasions he went to school, he was bullied for being a gypsy boy. And beyond the gates of the camp he found nothing but hostility. Slowly, Paddy's hurt turned into anger and by the age of 11 he had started out on an illustrious career in bare-knuckle fighting. This earned him a position as one of the most well-respected (and feared) men in the travelling community. Yet while he won countless contests in the ring, the real battles he faced were very much outside. In this deeply honest autobiography, he tells of how he has loved and lost five children; plummeted to seven stone while battling depression, drink and drugs. He describes how it feels to be shot point-blank in the head and the lengths he'll go to to protect his people, as well as life since My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding and Big Brother. Told with all the warmth and humour he is famed for, Paddy's rich and colourful story is one that will stay with you for a long time to come.

Book Rethinking Rhetorical Theory Criticism and Pedagogy

Download or read book Rethinking Rhetorical Theory Criticism and Pedagogy written by Antonio de Velasco and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2016-10-01 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What distinguishes the study of rhetoric from other pursuits in the liberal arts? From what realms of human existence and expression, of human history, does such study draw its defining character? What, in the end, should be the purposes of rhetorical inquiry? And amid so many competing accounts of discourse, power, and judgment in the contemporary world, how might scholars achieve these purposes through the attitudes and strategies that animate their work? Rethinking Rhetorical Theory, Criticism, and Pedagogy: The Living Art of Michael C. Leff offers answers to these questions by introducing the central insights of one of the most innovative and prolific rhetoricians of the twentieth century, Michael C. Leff. This volume charts Leff ’s decades-long development as a scholar, revealing both the variety of topics and the approach that marked his oeuvre, as well as his long-standing critique of the disciplinary assumptions of classical, Hellenistic, renaissance, modern, and postmodern rhetoric. Rethinking Rhetorical Theory, Criticism, and Pedagogy includes a synoptic introduction to the evolution of Leff ’s thought from his time as a graduate student in the late 1960s to his death in 2010, as well as specific commentary on twenty-four of his most illuminating essays and lectures.

Book Thought Perspectives of a Spiritual Warrior

Download or read book Thought Perspectives of a Spiritual Warrior written by Johnny Grady and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2020-11-04 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From what I can remember, this whole writing thing began around 2009-2010. It all started as a trickle of Facebook postings. Mostly uplifting messages and quotes from other people – and very occasionally, I would share my own unique perspective. Although social media is littered with trivial, mundane information, I'm very appreciative of these platforms and choose to use them for the dissemination of more uplifting and inspirational subject matter. Interestingly enough, prior to the digital age it was a real challenge for me to write even a few sentences on a consistent basis, let alone an entire paragraph. But little did I know that in 2014 that "trickle” of inspirational insights would literally turn into a waterfall - which still remains consistent till this day. And some of my insights and observations are shared in the pages that follow. Welcome to my world.
