This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Social Theory of Religious Education What consequences for religious education follow from the now widely accepted social interpretation of the Christian mes sage? The present work is an attempt to answer this question. The answer is not simple. For the social message does not require us merely to insert this or that new duty into our present scheme of living, but also to judge every detail of conduct from a higher point of view. We are required to organize the whole of life upon a different level. It would be strange indeed if the new meaning that this gives to every-day affairs did not change our outlook upon child life. If we are to be logical and practical in our social Christianity, we must revise our policies with respect to children at least as much as our policies with respect to adults. The chapters that follow undertake to show the directions that this revision will need to take. As we proceed, it will appear that the whole perspective of religious education undergoes a change. The central purpose, to begin with, grows more specific because the nature of good ness is seen to be as concrete as the neighbor who lives next door. Christian experience comes out of the clouds, because in our dealings with our brother whom we have seen we are deal ing with the Father whom we have not seen - yes, we here come into relation with what is deepest in his character and purposes. To Christian ears these statements do not sound strange, per haps, yet when they are applied to the religious life of the young they do sing a new melody. A profounder significance attaches to the will of a child, and especially to his relations with persons, whether children or adults. Book Capitalism and Classical Social Theory Second Edition

Download or read book Capitalism and Classical Social Theory Second Edition written by John Bratton and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2014-01-24 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most texts on classical social theory offer exhaustive coverage of every possible theorist, making it difficult to use the book in one semester. Capitalism and Classical Social Theory, Second Edition represents a departure from this approach by offering solid coverage of the classical triumvirate (Marx, Durkheim, and Weber), but also extending the canon strategically to include Simmel, four early female theorists, and the writings of Du Bois. The result is a manageable, but thorough, examination of the key classical theorists. The second edition has been updated throughout and includes two new chapters: one on Weber and rationalization, and one on Du Bois and his writings on race. A new concluding chapter links classical theory to current developments in capitalism during an age of austerity.

Book Capitalism and Classical Social Theory Third Edition

Download or read book Capitalism and Classical Social Theory Third Edition written by John Bratton and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2019-05-31 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this third edition of Capitalism and Classical Social Theory, John Bratton and David Denham build on the classical triumvirate--Karl Marx, ?mile Durkheim, and Max Weber--by extending the conversation to include early female theorists such as Mary Wollstonecraft and Charlotte Perkins Gilman, as well as the writings of W.E.B. Du Bois and G.H. Mead. Connecting current headlines in the political mainstream to concepts like alienation, anomie, class, gender, race, and the environment, Capitalism and Classical Social Theory sheds light on how classical social theories may be applied and understood within a contemporary context. This revised and expanded third edition features topical discussions of socio-economic shifts in the post-Trump and post-Brexit world and uses original excerpts and additional readings to further contextualize the significance of classical social theory today.

Book Holy Sparks

Download or read book Holy Sparks written by Philip Wexler and published by MacMillan. This book was released on 1997 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of the twentieth century the United States, is left with a school system widely believed to be in decline. In Holy Sparks, Philip Wexler likens American schools to the broken vessels of the Old Testament, but sees in this decline sparks of divine inspiration. Drawing broadly on cultural criticism, social theory and religious tradition, Wexler discerns a spiritual reawakening that pervades all of late twentieth century culture. He insists that only by paying attention to the 'holy sparks' that still exist in our children and in our schools will we ever be able to revive our educational system, and by extension, our future.
